Risk of Rain: Hostile Worlds is not coming to Android or iOS: Gearbox canceled the mobile spin-off before it received a full worldwide launch. It was announced in November 2023 and appears to have reached limited regional testing, but the reported shutdown date was June 29, 2024. It is not an officially supported, playable mobile release today.
What Gearbox announced
Gearbox Publishing revealed Risk of Rain: Hostile Worlds on November 8, 2023, during the franchise’s 10th-anniversary celebrations and alongside the release of Risk of Rain Returns. The game was announced for iOS and Android, but the reveal did not give it a worldwide release date. Gearbox’s announcement described a mobile game in development, not a confirmed launch timetable.

Frima Studio was the developer and Gearbox Publishing the publisher. It was not a mobile port made by Hopoo Games, the original Risk of Rain studio. The concept was a free-to-play action RPG and shooter designed specifically for phones, rather than Risk of Rain 2 adapted to a touchscreen.
How Hostile Worlds was supposed to play
The announced design combined isometric run-and-gun combat with bullet-hell and roguelike elements. Players would collect Survivors, assemble a squad of up to three, and switch between squad members during combat. Loot and item combinations were part of progression, while the planned feature set included story and co-op modes. The game overview summarizes those features.

That hero-collection structure and free-to-play model set Hostile Worlds apart from the main series. It was a separate mobile-oriented design, not simply the familiar run-based game or Risk of Rain 2 on a smaller screen. The available information does not establish a specific monetization system, so labels such as “gacha” should not be treated as confirmed.
It was tested, but never launched worldwide
Reports and player accounts indicate that Hostile Worlds reached a limited regional test or soft launch. It did not become a normal worldwide release on the App Store or Google Play. The exact scope of testing is not firmly established; contemporary reports mentioned markets including Canada, Australia, and the Philippines, but that should not be taken as a definitive list.

This distinction explains why some old posts or search results may call the game “available” or “coming soon.” An announcement, a limited test in selected markets, and a global launch are different milestones. Hostile Worlds reached the first two, but not the third.

Gearbox later said it had ceased development. Reporting that cited the game’s official Discord announcement said it would be removed from storefronts on June 29, 2024, and that players would lose access even if they had already installed it. GamesRadar’s report covers the cancellation and the reported shutdown notice.

The public information confirms that development ended, but does not give a detailed, verifiable reason. There is no sound basis for attributing the decision to a particular review score, player count, revenue target, or community reaction.
Can you download or play it now?
No—not as an officially supported public release. The reported storefront removal and loss of access mean that an old app icon or installation should not be mistaken for a working copy. The shutdown suggests the game depended on online services, so retaining an installation would not necessarily preserve access.

Avoid unofficial APK mirrors. A package from an unknown source may be unsafe, incomplete, or unable to connect to the discontinued service; sideloading one is not a reliable way to play. Gearbox’s current support catalog does not list Hostile Worlds as a supported Risk of Rain product.
Official Risk of Rain games you can play instead
- Risk of Rain Returns revisits the original 2D roguelike structure. It launched on PC and Nintendo Switch.
- Risk of Rain 2 is the main 3D action-roguelike entry, available on PC and consoles.
These are official franchise alternatives, not Android or iOS versions of Hostile Worlds. Neither should be described as an official mobile port.
