Roblox Error Code 280 means Roblox has detected an issue with the version of the client running on your device. That can mean an update is waiting, an update failed, or local Roblox files are damaged. It does not always mean your app store will visibly show an Update button.
The fastest reliable fix is to close Roblox, update it through the store or launcher where it was installed, restart your device, and reinstall Roblox if no update is available. If the error remains, check local app data, your device’s date and time, Mac permissions, and your network.
The steps below follow Roblox’s current Error 280 guidance, checked August 18, 2026, with platform-specific details added to help you update the correct installation.
Quick fix for Error Code 280
- Completely close Roblox.
- Update Roblox through the same store or launcher used to install it.
- Restart your device.
- If no update appears, uninstall Roblox and reinstall it from the official Roblox website or the relevant official app store.
- If Error 280 returns, follow the instructions for your device below.
Do not download a “Roblox updater” from a third-party website. Use only the official Roblox site, Microsoft Store, Apple App Store, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, or the supported Chromebook installation path.

What does Roblox Error 280 mean?
Roblox describes Error 280 as an issue with the Roblox version running on a computer or mobile device. The message commonly says that your version may be out of date, but the underlying problem can also involve corrupted installation data, incorrect system time, permissions, or network conditions. Roblox’s official Error 280 guide does not require that a visible store update be available.
In practical terms, Roblox cannot accept or properly verify the client currently running on your device. Updating or replacing that client is therefore the sensible first step.
Error 280 is not the same as these codes
- Error 279 / ID 17: Roblox could not connect to the experience.
- Error 277: The connection to the game server was lost.
- Error 268: Roblox detected unexpected client behavior.
- Error 264: The same account launched an experience from another device.
Roblox lists these as separate errors in its official error-code index.
First check: are you updating the right Roblox installation?
Some devices can have more than one Roblox installation path. Updating one copy does not necessarily update another.
| Installation | Where to update or reinstall |
|---|---|
| Windows Store app | Microsoft Store |
| Desktop/browser-triggered installation | Launch Roblox from the official Roblox website and allow its installer or launcher to update |
| iPhone or iPad | Apple App Store |
| Android | Google Play |
| Amazon Fire tablet | Amazon Appstore |
| Chromebook | ChromeOS update and the supported Google Play installation |
If Roblox is installed twice on Windows, identify which copy you normally open and update or remove that copy. Roblox maintains separate support areas for the Microsoft Store app, desktop installation, Mac, mobile devices, and Chromebook in its technology support center.
Fix Error 280 on Windows
1. Update the correct Windows version
For the Microsoft Store version, open Microsoft Store, select Library, and check for Roblox updates. If you normally start Roblox from a browser, open the official Roblox website, choose an experience, and allow the Roblox desktop installer or launcher to run.
If the store says Open rather than Update, the installed files may still be incomplete or corrupted. Continue with a reinstall instead of repeatedly searching for an update.

For Windows 11 64-bit, Roblox documents this path:

After uninstalling, reinstall Roblox from the official Roblox website or the Microsoft Store installation source you intend to use.
3. Clear Roblox’s local data if reinstalling does not help
Use this step only after Roblox has been uninstalled. It removes the Roblox folder and local data, which can include cached files and settings; you may need to sign in again.
Warning: Confirm that Roblox is already uninstalled before running the command. Do not run it casually while Roblox is installed.
- Press Win+R.
- Type
CMDand press Enter. - Run:
cd AppDataLocal
rmdir /s Roblox
When Windows asks for confirmation, enter y. Restart the computer, then reinstall Roblox from the official source.

These are the cleanup commands specified in Roblox’s Error 280 instructions.
4. Test another connection
Try joining Roblox through a phone hotspot or another trusted network. This is a diagnostic test, not proof that Error 280 is normally a network error.
Recommended Free Tools
- Works on the hotspot but not home Wi-Fi: investigate router filtering, DNS, firewall rules, parental controls, managed-network restrictions, or your ISP.
- Fails on every connection: the installation, device, permissions, or operating system is more likely involved.
Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection. If security software is blocking Roblox, use a narrowly scoped exception only when you understand what you are allowing.
Fix Error 280 on Mac
Roblox’s current Error 280 page lists macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later for its Mac instructions.
- Close Roblox.
- Move the Roblox app to the Trash. You can drag it to Trash, use the menu-bar option to move it to Trash, or select it and press Command-Delete.
- Reinstall Roblox from the official Roblox source.
- Check whether macOS has blocked or restricted Roblox.
Open Apple menu → Privacy & Security. Older macOS releases may label the main settings area Preferences; newer releases use System Settings. Look for a Roblox-related permission or approval and enable it only if macOS is specifically preventing the app from running.
Then test another internet connection. If Roblox works elsewhere, investigate the Mac’s network, security software, or managed connection.

- Restart the iPhone or iPad.
- Open the app switcher and swipe Roblox away to force-close it. On devices with a Home button, use the Home-button app-switcher method instead.
- Delete Roblox.
- Open the App Store and reinstall Roblox.
- Open the device’s date and time settings and make sure the date, time, and time zone are correct. Automatic time is preferable when available.
- Try another trusted internet connection.
Reinstalling replaces the app, but it does not guarantee a fix if the device clock, network, or operating-system compatibility is the real problem.
Fix Error 280 on Android
Roblox lists Android OS 6 and above in its Error 280 guidance. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Power off the device.
- Leave it off for approximately 30 seconds.
- Turn it back on.
- Open recent apps and force-close Roblox.
- Uninstall Roblox.
- Reinstall it from Google Play.
- Check and correct the date and time.
- Test another trusted network.
To force-close the app, current Android devices may use a path such as Settings → Apps → Roblox → Force stop. Older instructions may call this Application manager, while other phones use App info or See all apps. The important action is to stop Roblox, remove it, and install the current Google Play version.

- Verify the date and time, then test another connection if necessary.
Fix Error 280 on Chromebook
Roblox’s Error 280 page lists Chrome OS version 53 and above. First install any available ChromeOS updates, then restart the Chromebook.
Force-close Roblox
- Open the Chrome menu.
- Select More tools → Task Manager.
- Select the Roblox process.
- Select End Process.
- Sign out or shut down the Chromebook, then start it again.
Remove and reinstall Roblox
- Open the launcher and locate Roblox.
- Right-click Roblox and select Remove from Chrome, or use the equivalent removal option shown on your Chromebook.
- Reinstall Roblox through Google Play.
- Check the device date and time.
- Try another trusted network.
What if the store says there is no update?
“No update available” does not rule out a damaged installation, stale local data, updating the wrong Roblox copy, an operating-system compatibility issue, an incorrect clock, or a permission or network problem.
Use this decision path:
- Confirm the installation source. Check whether you use the Microsoft Store app, desktop launcher, App Store, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, or Chromebook app.
- Reinstall from that same official source. A fresh copy can replace corrupted files and install the latest available version.
- Clear local Roblox data on Windows if a clean reinstall still fails.
- Correct the device date and time.
- Check Mac permissions if you use macOS.
- Try another network.
- Test another device. This helps separate a device problem from a broader service problem.
- Contact Roblox Support if the error persists across clean installations and networks.
A staged rollout or temporary Roblox-side issue is possible, but do not assume that is the cause without confirmation from an official Roblox status or announcement.

| What you observe | Best next check |
|---|---|
| The store says “Open,” not “Update” | Reinstall Roblox from the official source. |
| A reinstall changes nothing | Clear local data on Windows or check permissions on Mac. |
| Roblox works on a hotspot but not Wi-Fi | Investigate network filtering, router settings, DNS, firewall rules, or the ISP. |
| Error 280 appears on several devices | Check Roblox’s official support or service channels before repeatedly reinstalling. |
| You are using a VM, cloud PC, remote desktop, or emulator | Move to a supported environment; Roblox says virtual machines and cloud-based computers are unsupported. |
| Only one account or experience is affected | Verify the exact error number. The problem may be another account, access, or experience-specific error. |
Supported-device and environment cautions
The operating-system versions above are the versions Roblox lists in its current Error 280 guidance, checked August 18, 2026. They should not be treated as a complete or permanent statement of every current hardware requirement.
Roblox’s general error-code information also says mobile devices should use the original, updated operating system and that virtual or cloud computers are not supported. It gives general internet guidance of 4–8 Mb/s or above, but Error 280 should not automatically be blamed on internet speed alone. A network can have adequate speed and still block Roblox through filtering or security controls.
Does Error 280 mean your account is banned?
No. Roblox’s official error-code documentation does not connect Error 280 with an account ban. Roblox documents ban or access-related problems under separate codes, including Error 267 and Error 600. Error 280 is primarily a client-version or device-side troubleshooting problem.
When to contact Roblox Support
Contact Roblox Support when:
- Reinstalling from the official source does not help.
- Windows cleanup does not resolve the problem.
- The error persists on a supported device and a different network.
- You cannot determine which Roblox installation or launcher is being used.
- The issue affects multiple devices and appears unrelated to local files.
Include your device model, operating-system version, installation source, exact error message, steps already attempted, and whether the problem occurs on another network. Roblox’s error-code index directs users to support when the documented troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.

Can Error Code 280 happen when Roblox shows no update?
Yes. Roblox says Error 280 means there is an issue with the Roblox version running on the device, not necessarily that a visible store update is waiting. A failed update, corrupted files, wrong installation source, incorrect time, permissions, or network conditions can also be involved.
Will reinstalling Roblox delete my account or Robux?
No. Reinstalling the official app does not delete your Roblox account or Robux. You may need to sign in again. On Windows, the additional local-data cleanup removes cached files and settings, so use it only after uninstalling Roblox.
Is Roblox Error 280 caused by a ban?
There is no indication in Roblox’s official error-code documentation that Error 280 means an account ban. Ban and access problems use separate error codes.
Can Roblox run in a virtual machine or cloud PC?
Roblox’s general error-code guidance says virtual machines and cloud-based computers are unsupported, so reinstalling may not resolve Error 280 in those environments.
