Roblox’s October 28–31, 2021 outage was caused by failures in its internal infrastructure—not a surge in player traffic or one particular game. The company traced it to two interacting performance problems involving Consul and BoltDB, then restored service gradually, returning full player access at 16:45 PST on October 31. Roblox reported no user data loss or unauthorized access.
Why was Roblox down for three days?
Roblox’s 2022 postmortem describes a 73-hour outage that began on October 28 and ended with full restoration on October 31. Roblox regularly served about 50 million players per day and operated hundreds of internal services. Its postmortem described infrastructure comprising more than 18,000 servers and 170,000 containers.
The incident was not caused by a peak in external traffic or by any particular Roblox experience. CEO David Baszucki said as much in his initial update, which characterized the problem as a subtle backend communications bug amid growth in the number of servers. The later engineering postmortem explained the specific mechanisms behind that failure.
Roblox’s authors summarized the incident this way: “In short, the system failed because Consul was a single point of failure, and Consul was not healthy.” The company’s account, published January 20, 2022, is Roblox Return to Service; Baszucki’s November 1, 2021 update is An Update on Our Outage.

What failed inside Roblox’s infrastructure?
Roblox used Nomad to schedule containers, Consul for service discovery, health checks, session locking and key-value storage, and Vault to retrieve production secrets. Services depended on Consul to find and communicate with one another; Nomad and Vault depended on it too. When Consul became unhealthy, the impact spread: services struggled to locate peers, container scheduling was impaired, and production authentication secrets could not be retrieved normally.
Roblox’s Consul cluster had five voting nodes and five non-voting read replicas. The voters replicated state using Raft. Roblox had upgraded from Consul 1.9 to 1.10 to use a streaming feature intended to reduce CPU and network use. On October 27, the feature was enabled on a backend service responsible for traffic routing. In preparation for year-end demand, Roblox had also increased the number of traffic-routing nodes by 50%.

Consul streaming contention
On October 28, engineers saw degraded Vault performance and high CPU use on a Consul server. Consul key-value write latency, usually below 300 milliseconds at the 50th percentile, had risen to about two seconds. Replacing hardware did not fix the problem.
Profiling data eventually pointed to contention in the streaming subscription code path. HashiCorp, whose engineers assisted Roblox, explained that streaming’s use of fewer Go channels could worsen contention under a combination of very high read and write load. Disabling streaming brought median Consul key-value write latency back to 300 milliseconds.

BoltDB’s slow Raft log writes
Disabling streaming did not resolve every slow Consul leader. Consul used BoltDB to store Raft logs, and Roblox’s workload triggered unusually expensive freelist maintenance. The postmortem gives an example of a 4.2 GB log store containing 489 MB of actual data and a 7.8 MB freelist. That freelist could be written during log appends even when the appended record was 16 KB or smaller. These expensive writes contributed to long delays and TCP back pressure on unhealthy leaders.
The two problems had different mechanisms: streaming caused contention under intense simultaneous reads and writes, while BoltDB freelist maintenance made some Raft log writes unexpectedly slow. Together, they left a central coordination service unable to support dependent systems reliably.

How did Roblox restore service?
Engineers tried replacing Consul nodes, resetting the cluster from a snapshot, limiting traffic and reducing Consul usage. Those measures did not remove the underlying performance problems. Roblox and HashiCorp then disabled streaming and prevented slow leaders from remaining elected, which stabilized Consul.
Roblox said its databases were unaffected, but its cache system was unhealthy and had to be redeployed. During normal operation, the company’s postmortem said, multiple cache layers handled 1 billion requests per second; this describes cache-system capacity and activity, not player traffic during the outage.

Rebuilding the caches exposed additional recovery obstacles: stale scheduling data, a node that appeared healthy to the scheduler despite being unhealthy, and a deployment tool designed for incremental updates rather than bootstrapping a large cluster from scratch. At 05:00 PST on October 31—61 hours after the outage began—Roblox reported that Consul and caching were healthy.
The company restarted services and used DNS steering to restore access in stages. It admitted portions of players at a time, increasing access in roughly 10% increments while checking database load, cache performance and overall stability. Full player access returned at 16:45 PST on October 31.
Was Roblox hacked or was player data lost?
Roblox said there was no user data loss or unauthorized access during the incident. In his initial update, Baszucki also said the company knew of no loss of player persistence data. These are Roblox’s statements about the outage, not an independent audit finding.
What did Roblox say it would change?
In the 2022 postmortem, Roblox committed to improving monitoring, removing circular dependencies in observability, accelerating bootstrapping, moving toward multiple availability zones and data centers, and remediating Consul issues. Those are commitments stated in the postmortem; the cited sources do not establish which changes have since been completed.
