What Roblox is today
Roblox is a platform containing millions of user-created “experiences,” built and published with Roblox Studio. Players can move between games, social spaces and interactive events, using text, voice, friends, groups and user-generated content. Robux is the platform’s virtual currency, while eligible developers can exchange qualifying earned Robux through Developer Exchange (DevEx); Robux itself is not cash and cannot automatically be withdrawn.
The company’s business is driven mainly by virtual goods and creator activity, with advertising becoming a larger strategic area. That combination makes Roblox simultaneously a game destination, a development ecosystem, a social service and a commercial platform.

Age checks, communication and account categories
How the checks differ
Roblox uses age estimation and other verification methods. Age estimation is not necessarily identity verification: a facial estimate, a government-ID process, a verified parent and an ordinary date of birth can involve different data and consequences. Roblox says mandatory checks for communication were completed in early January 2026 in regions where chat is enabled.

Age categories govern which users can communicate and which experiences or features are available. A failed or missing check can restrict chat or voice rather than remove access to every experience. Incorrect estimates may require the available correction or appeal route, which can differ by region and account situation.
Privacy and reliability questions
Age assurance can reduce unwanted cross-age contact, but it introduces facial-video, third-party-processing, retention and regional-law questions. It can also misclassify legitimate users, exclude people unable to complete a check or create friction at login. Age checks reduce risk; they do not prove that every user is genuine or eliminate inappropriate content and bad actors.
Roblox has described age-based communication, Trusted Connections, privacy controls, parental insights and expanded machine-learning moderation in its safety announcements: Roblox’s July 2025 announcement and its filing on the completed rollout at SEC.gov.
Roblox Kids and Roblox Select
Roblox Kids is intended for younger users with the strongest default restrictions. Roblox says children aged 5–8, as determined by age-check technology or a verified parent, may be assigned that category. Roblox Select is described in Creator Hub documentation as covering users aged 9–15. Regular accounts increasingly serve older users under the age-based model. Account eligibility, migration, regional availability and exact menus can change; check the live product and Creator Hub documentation.

What parents should check first
- Link the child’s Roblox account to a verified parent account.
- Review the displayed age category and each experience’s maturity or age rating.
- Set text, voice, friend and communication permissions rather than assuming they are maximally restricted.
- Review spending, gifting and transfer controls, including device-store purchase protections.
- Use activity or screen-time insights where available and discuss reporting and off-platform contact.
- Recheck settings after major updates, because labels and feature availability vary by age, country, device and account type.
Roblox says the new categories are intended to provide safety-by-default settings and greater parental visibility, but parental controls are not a guarantee of safety. A child can use an unlinked or second account, move a conversation off-platform or encounter a context that an automated rating misses.
Moderation and Roblox Sentinel
Roblox says uploaded assets undergo AI scanning, user-report review and multimodal moderation covering text, voice and other signals. It describes Roblox Sentinel as an open-source AI system designed to detect early signals of child endangerment. Detecting a signal is not proof of misconduct: effective enforcement also requires investigation, human review, consistent action and an appeal process. False positives and false negatives remain possible, and Roblox’s descriptions are company claims rather than independent proof that the systems prevent harm.

Lawsuits, settlements and regulation
State attorneys general have sued Roblox or alleged that it failed to protect minors. Roblox has responded by pointing to safety investments and policy changes. In April 2026, the Associated Press reported a $12 million Nevada settlement; the Nevada filing set out additional commitments including facial age estimation and expanded parental oversight. A settlement is an agreement, not automatically an admission or a judicial finding that every allegation was true: AP’s report and the Nevada filing.

Further state laws, privacy rules and age-assurance requirements could add obligations. The unresolved question is whether Roblox can demonstrate safer outcomes while preserving privacy, access and a workable user experience.
What creators need to know
Publishing and review
Creators publishing content accessible to users under 16 may need identity verification, two-step verification and age-suitability evaluation. Roblox documentation describes a refundable 100,000-Robux expedited-review fee for certain launches. A separate developer announcement describes a one-time refundable 1,000-Robux publishing fee as an alternative to a Plus or Premium subscription for public publishing. Eligibility, audience scope and refund conditions matter; these are not a universal “fee to make a game.” See Creator Hub and the developer announcement.
Plan for review time, moderation updates and the possibility that a game’s actual audience differs from its intended audience. Hobbyists, schools and small studios may find the new requirements more burdensome, while Roblox says they are intended to reduce spam and abuse.
Robux, Plus, Premium and DevEx
Robux is virtual currency. Roblox Plus is the newer subscription reference; Premium may still appear in existing documentation or accounts, so do not assume the two are interchangeable without checking current billing pages. DevEx pays eligible creators fiat currency for qualifying earned Robux under Roblox’s rules. Roblox’s 2025 filing says more than 23,500 creators participated in DevEx during that year.

Roblox’s June 2026 developer update says accounts with two-step verification and good standing may qualify for transfers of up to 5,000 Robux per day and 10,000 per month, subject to regional and parental-control exceptions: the transfer announcement.
Older-user monetisation
In a Q1 2026 shareholder letter, Roblox reported that users over 18 represented 26% of age-checked daily active users and that U.S. users aged 18–34 were growing faster than other cohorts. Roblox also said U.S. over-18 users monetised more highly than under-18 users and planned to raise effective creator earnings on qualifying in-game spending by age-checked U.S. users over 18 from 26.6% to 37.8%, beginning June 8, 2026, for games using the R15 avatar framework. These are company-reported figures, not an independent earnings guarantee.

Roblox is expanding advertising through Advertising Integrations, homepage formats and billboard placements. Its May 2026 standards distinguish age-appropriate advertising for 18+, 13–17 and under-13 audiences. Brands must consider disclosure, child-directed advertising, targeting limits, measurement, creator compensation and brand safety. Roblox-operated placements are not identical to independent in-experience integrations, and Roblox should not be treated as offering the same targeting or measurement environment as a general-audience social network.

Studio, Build and AI tools
Roblox Studio remains the core environment for scripting, asset creation, collaboration and testing. Roblox listed Build as a creation-related offering on July 16, 2026, but the available announcement does not establish enough detail here to describe its workflow or general availability. Treat announced, beta and generally available tools as different things. AI assistance may lower development barriers, yet creators still need to check originality, copyright, quality, moderation and Roblox-policy compliance for generated scripts and assets.
Roblox’s scale and financial picture

Roblox said age-check rollout and the December 2025 Russia platform ban affected growth and communication. The official site records a July 30, 2026 Q2 earnings call, but Q2 figures should not be published until its release and shareholder letter are verified: Q1 shareholder letter, Q2 call page and quarterly results.
What the changes mean for each audience
Players and parents
Expect more age separation and checks before communication. Configure controls, verify the child’s account and treat ratings as guidance rather than a guarantee.
Creators
Choose the intended age audience early, complete verification and two-step authentication, budget for subscriptions or refundable fees, and allow time for suitability review. Gross Robux sales are not the same as disposable income.
Brands
Match creative and placement to the intended age group, distinguish official Roblox inventory from creator integrations, and require clear disclosure and measurable brand-safety responsibilities.
Investors and business readers
Roblox is trying to grow older-user monetisation and advertising while maintaining youth participation. The trade-off is greater dependence on reliable age assurance, privacy compliance, moderation and regulatory acceptance.
