Roblox announced a new visible format for newly generated private-server links in October 2023, but said the change did not alter how private servers work: the game ID and private-server link code remained in use behind the scenes, and existing links would continue to work. The change was intended to support more resilient sharing and deferred deep linking. The details below describe what Roblox staff said during that rollout; they do not establish how every link behaves on current devices today.
What changed in Roblox private-server links?
In an October 2, 2023 announcement, Roblox staff said a gradual rollout would begin October 9 for newly generated private-server links. The visible URL changed from a game URL with a private-server code parameter to a share route with a code and a link-type parameter. Roblox described the new format as more resilient and able to support deferred deep linking.
| Link | Example format announced | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier format | roblox.com/games/{{ ID }}?privateServerLinkCode={{ ID }} |
The game ID and private-server link code appear in the URL. |
| New format | roblox.com/share?code={{ ID }}&type=Server |
A share route exposes a code and identifies the link as a server link. |
These are the announcement’s illustrative URL patterns, not complete links to use. The visible change did not mean Roblox stopped relying on the game ID or private-server link code: staff said both continued to be used under the hood. The new link’s displayed ID was described as helping route people through deferred deep linking when they did not have the app installed. Roblox Developer Forum: “Improved Private Server Links”
Did the change break existing links or private-server behavior?
Roblox said all pre-existing private-server links would continue to work. Staff also clarified that the underlying use of the Private Server Link Code and Game ID had not changed, so the announcement concerned link format and routing rather than a new private-server model.

That is Roblox’s compatibility statement from October 2023, not a guarantee that every third-party workflow or current device-specific route is trouble-free. The announcement invited developers to report issues with workflows, add-ons, and extensions, but it gave no named impact statistic or measured compatibility result.
What does type mean in the new URL?
The type parameter identifies the kind of share link. Staff gave Server for a private-server link and ExperienceInvite as an example associated with the in-game “Invite Friends To Join > Share Invite Link” flow. Roblox said the parameter would distinguish link types as it continued adding them.

A developer also asked about a possible Studio collaboration link. Staff said they would investigate, but the thread does not establish that a Studio collaboration link was shipped.
Will Discord previews still work?
In an October 2, 2023 reply, Roblox staff said the change would not break Discord embeds and that Roblox would maintain the metadata platforms such as Discord use to show an experience preview. This records Roblox’s assurance at rollout; the thread does not independently test current previews across platforms.

Can a bot extract the place ID from a new private-server link?
In November 2023, developers asked how bots could recover the game or place ID because it was no longer visible in the same way in the URL. A Roblox staff reply described an HTML meta tag for the place ID:
<meta name="roblox:start_place_id" content="THE ID YOU'RE USED TO FROM THE OLD URI">
On November 15, staff said the tag was live and showed an example with the value 2686040248. This is a thread-era implementation detail, not confirmation that the tag remains available or unchanged today. A bot depending on it should check the current page markup and handle missing or changed metadata rather than treating the thread as a current integration specification.

What did developers report about mobile routing and redirects?
Forum participants reported in October and November 2023 that links sometimes behaved differently on iOS, including opening the App Store or Roblox home page instead of the intended private server. In a November reply, Roblox staff said that entering a deep-link URL directly into Safari’s address bar was not supported by Apple, quoting: “Entering the URL directly into Safari’s address bar will never open the app.” The thread presents that as an Apple-documentation excerpt but does not link to the underlying Apple source.
That browser-address-bar statement should not be read as a finding about every link tapped in iOS, every iOS version, or current behavior. The reports are historical user accounts, not a controlled or current cross-device test.

On October 23, 2023, Roblox staff acknowledged latency caused by the redirect and said the team had ideas for a future improvement. The thread gives neither measured timings nor the outcome of that proposed improvement, so it cannot establish whether a delay persists or was later resolved.
What the announcement does—and does not—establish
- Established in the thread: Roblox’s announced rollout timing, example URL formats, compatibility statement for older links, explanation of the
typeparameter, and staff comments about previews, bot metadata, mobile reports, and redirect latency. - Not established by the thread: current behavior on all devices, present-day availability of the meta tag, a universal guarantee for Discord embeds, or measured redirect performance.
For the announcement and its staff replies, see the Roblox Developer Forum thread.
