Yes—Roblox has introduced a broader age-based safety system in 2026. The changes add Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts, require age checks before chat in chat-enabled regions, narrow communication between age groups, restrict mature content and social-media links, and expand parental controls for users under 16.
They are significant structural changes, but they do not prove that Roblox has solved the child-safety problems alleged in lawsuits and investigations. Age estimation is not identity verification, an age category is not a trust guarantee, and platform controls apply to accounts—not necessarily every device or account a child can use.
What Roblox changed
Roblox’s new system was introduced in stages rather than through one single policy change:
- January 7, 2026: Roblox announced age checks for chat in chat-enabled regions.
- February 5: It described a move beyond self-reported age, including Trusted Connections and behavioral checks.
- April 13: Roblox announced Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, and expanded parental controls for users under 16.
- April 15: Nevada announced a $12 million legal agreement requiring additional safety commitments.
- June: Roblox said the age-based account framework was globally available, subject to regional differences and rollout conditions.
Roblox’s announcements describe a global framework, but the exact age-check method, legal requirements, available controls, and feature behavior can differ by country, platform, account type, and chat-enabled region.

Roblox Kids and Roblox Select: the new age bands

Roblox says users who have not completed age assurance may be placed into a restricted Kids or Select experience based on their self-declared age. They do not receive chat or the full Roblox experience until age assurance is completed. The company’s stated bands are a useful guide, not a promise that every country will apply identical settings.

What children will experience by age
Ages 5–8: Roblox Kids
Roblox Kids is intended for the youngest users. Communication is disabled by default, and access is designed around experiences with the lowest content-maturity ratings, described by Roblox as Minimal or Mild.
A parent may be able to authorize limited communication after completing the required process. That does not mean every interaction inside a low-rated experience is safe: maturity labels classify experiences, not every player, conversation, creator behavior, or later change to user-generated content.

This group is treated differently from younger children and from teenagers. Roblox says users are assigned to age groups for communication, including under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21 and older. Users generally communicate within their own group and adjacent groups, subject to additional restrictions.
That means a 12-year-old is not simply placed into one broad “under 13” bucket. Communication, contacts, content access, and parental oversight can be more permissive than for a 7-year-old but remain more restricted than for older users.
Ages 13–15
Teenagers in this range remain under the expanded parental-control framework. Roblox says parents can retain certain controls until a child turns 16, including tools related to communication, contacts, content, and safety settings. Nevada’s agreement also adds requirements affecting users under 16, including parental consent for certain Trusted Friends and expanded oversight.

Ages 16 and older
Users 16 and older generally move into the standard Roblox experience and have fewer age-based restrictions. Roblox’s June update also said social-media links would be shareable or viewable only by age-checked users who are at least 16.

It may reduce obvious routes from Roblox to less-moderated services, but it cannot stop someone from manually sharing a username, phone number, coded contact information, or details through another device.
Chat now requires age assurance
Since January 2026, Roblox has required an age check before a user can access chat in chat-enabled regions. Roblox says the process may use facial age estimation. Users can appeal or correct an incorrect result using alternative methods, which may include government-issued identification or parental controls in some circumstances.
Chat is not the same thing as all Roblox activity. The mandatory age-check requirement described by Roblox is tied to chat access, while particular laws or legal agreements may create additional obligations. A child may still be able to play some experiences without completing the check, but with restricted functionality and without chat or the full Roblox experience.
- Age estimation predicts an age range.
- Identity verification attempts to establish who submitted information or documents.
- Neither proves that a user is safe, honest, or trustworthy.
- A linked parent account provides oversight, not continuous supervision.
- A content label classifies an experience, not every conversation or behavior inside it.
Roblox’s own explanation of age checks for chat and its discussion of moving beyond self-reported age explain the company’s approach. Facial age estimation should not be described as traditional facial-recognition identity proof.

Roblox has described Trusted Connections as a way to give younger users more controlled communication. For users younger than 13, the company said it planned parental oversight of Trusted Friend requests and that a linked parent or caregiver could be treated as a Trusted Connection in some situations.
The Nevada agreement adds more specific requirements for users under 16, including parental-consent requirements for certain Trusted Friends. These mechanisms are intended to limit who can contact a child; they do not establish that every approved contact is safe or that a child cannot be persuaded to communicate elsewhere.

What parents can control
Depending on the child’s account, country, and platform, Roblox says a linked parent or caregiver may be able to:
- Link a parent account to the child’s account.
- Review or manage contacts.
- Approve or decline Trusted Friend requests.
- Adjust communication settings.
- Set content restrictions.
- Block or report users.
- Manage some screen-time-related settings.
The important practical point is that a control existing in Roblox does not mean it is enabled or configured correctly. Parents should confirm that the account is linked, check the assigned age category, inspect communication settings, review friends and Trusted Connections, and verify which controls are available in their region.

Roblox’s Help Center and Safety Center should be used for current menu labels and account-linking steps, because the interface can change by device, country, and account type.
Why Roblox made these changes now
The changes come amid lawsuits, state investigations, congressional scrutiny, and criticism over whether Roblox protected children adequately. The legal claims are not all identical, and lawsuits or investigations contain allegations—not final findings that establish every accusation.
The allegations
Recurring claims by officials, families, and plaintiffs include allegations that Roblox:
- Relied too heavily on self-reported birth dates.
- Allowed children to create accounts without meaningful parental knowledge or consent.
- Left unsafe communication pathways through which children could encounter adults or be directed off-platform.
- Failed to remove inappropriate or exploitative content quickly or consistently enough.
- Made safety claims that did not match the effectiveness of its controls.
- Prioritized engagement, growth, or revenue over child safety.
The final claim in particular must remain attributed. It is an allegation made in legal and political criticism, not an established fact stated here.
Government and legal timeline
- Louisiana: The state brought a lawsuit over alleged child-safety failures and misleading safety representations. Roblox disputed the broad characterization of its platform.
- Kentucky: A separate lawsuit alleged that Roblox failed to protect children; the case is part of the broader legal scrutiny surrounding the platform.
- Georgia, February 17: The attorney general announced an investigation concerning reports of child exploitation and age-verification procedures.
- Nevada, April 15: The attorney general announced a $12 million legal agreement involving age assurance, parental oversight, Trusted Friends, and other safety commitments. See the Nevada announcement and agreement document.
- Oklahoma, May 14: The attorney general filed a lawsuit alleging that Roblox endangered children and deceived parents.
- Connecticut, May 26: The attorney general announced an investigation into alleged harm to children.
- Federal scrutiny: The Senate Judiciary Committee questioned technology companies, including Roblox, about whether suspected child exploitation was being reported adequately to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
Roblox’s Q1 2026 SEC filing acknowledges legal and regulatory proceedings involving claims about platform safety, bad actors, warnings to parents, and safety measures. Its filings and public responses also show that the company disputes the idea that it has no meaningful safety systems.

What the NCMEC report numbers do—and do not—show
Roblox said it reported 24,522 cases to NCMEC in 2024, describing that as 0.12% of approximately 20.3 million total reports submitted to NCMEC that year. A figure of 65,381 reports in 2025 was cited during congressional scrutiny and by Roblox as evidence of increased detection and reporting.
Neither number means that 24,522 or 65,381 children were abused on Roblox. A CyberTipline report can involve suspected exploitation or potentially illegal material; it is not necessarily a confirmed crime, a unique victim, or a verified predator. At the same time, a lower number would not prove safety, because reporting and detection can be incomplete.

Roblox says it introduced more than 40 safety features during the period leading up to its response to the Louisiana lawsuit. The company points to:
- Age-based communication.
- Facial age estimation.
- Parental controls.
- Stricter defaults for users under 13.
- Content-maturity labels.
- AI asset scanning.
- User reporting.
- Multimodal moderation.
- Monitoring for suspicious behavior.
- Cooperation with law enforcement and NCMEC.
- Partnerships with child-safety and mental-health organizations.
Roblox also acknowledges in its SEC filings that no moderation system can eliminate every objectionable item or bad actor from a large user-generated platform. The central dispute is therefore not whether Roblox has safety tools; it is whether those tools are accurate, consistently enforced, understandable to parents, and effective in real-world conditions.
What the new system can and cannot solve
Potential benefits
- Entering a false birth date alone should no longer be enough to obtain chat in a chat-enabled region.
- Age bands are more granular than treating every child under 13 alike.
- Adults and young children have fewer direct communication pathways.
- Parents receive broader visibility and control for children under 16.
- Social-media links are less visible to younger users.
- Behavior that conflicts with an assigned age may receive additional scrutiny.
Persistent limitations
- Misclassification: Facial estimation can place a child or adult in the wrong age group. Roblox provides appeal pathways, but an age category remains a probabilistic safety layer.
- Account circumvention: Controls apply to an account. A child could potentially use another account, a sibling’s account, an adult’s device, or a separate household profile. The dossier does not establish how often this happens.
- Misrepresented age: A malicious user who passes or circumvents age assurance could still appear to belong to a younger group. Age grouping is not a trust system.
- Off-platform migration: Blocking visible links does not prevent manual sharing of contact details or communication through Discord, Snapchat, messaging apps, voice chat, or another device.
- Content-label limits: A low-maturity rating does not guarantee that every social interaction inside an experience is safe.
- Parent dependence: The system works best when a parent links the account, reviews settings, supervises contacts, and talks with the child about manipulation and secrecy.
- Privacy and access: Facial age estimation and ID-based appeals create biometric-data, identity-data, false-positive, and exclusion concerns. Roblox says privacy is a priority, but the available material does not resolve those concerns.
How to judge whether Roblox’s changes are meaningful
Feature announcements are only the starting point. Parents, policymakers, and educators should ask:
- Accuracy: How often are children and adults placed in the correct age group?
- Circumvention: Can users evade the system with alternate accounts, borrowed devices, another person’s facial scan, or false documents?
- Coverage: Does it cover text chat, voice chat, private servers, profiles, experiences, and external links?
- Defaults: Are restrictive settings enabled automatically?
- Usability: Can an ordinary parent find and understand the controls?
- Enforcement: Are violating accounts removed quickly and consistently?
- Reporting: Does Roblox provide NCMEC and law enforcement with useful evidence and location information?
- Privacy: What information is collected, processed, and retained?
- Off-platform risk: Does the system reduce migration, or merely move it out of Roblox’s visibility?
- Accountability: Which changes are voluntary product decisions, and which are tied to settlements or local legal requirements?
No independently verified audit identified in the available research demonstrates how accurately Roblox’s age-estimation system classifies users or how frequently children evade the controls. Those remain important evidence gaps.

What parents should do now
- Correct the date of birth. Make sure the child’s Roblox account contains accurate age information.
- Decide whether to complete age assurance. If chat is needed, review Roblox’s current process and privacy information before proceeding.
- Link a parent or caregiver account. Do not assume controls are active until the link is confirmed.
- Check the assigned account category. Verify whether Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, or another experience applies.
- Inspect communication settings. Defaults can change, and availability may differ by region.
- Review friends and Trusted Connections. Discuss why an age badge or approved contact is not proof that someone is safe.
- Check maturity settings and recently played experiences. Remember that labels do not evaluate every conversation.
- Watch for off-platform pressure. Pay attention to requests to move to Discord, Snapchat, messaging apps, private voice calls, or another device.
- Block and report suspicious users. Save usernames, dates, messages, screenshots, and relevant links before content disappears.
- Add device-level controls. Use Apple Screen Time, Google Family Link, Microsoft Family Safety, or an equivalent tool as a second layer beyond Roblox.
- Escalate credible threats. If a child is being threatened, exploited, solicited sexually, abducted, or placed in immediate danger, contact local law enforcement and relevant child-protection authorities. An in-platform report is not an emergency response.
Roblox controls versus device-level controls
Roblox’s built-in controls are the first layer for families already using the platform. Device-level tools add restrictions that remain relevant if a child opens another browser, app, or game.
- Microsoft Family Safety is aimed at Windows, Xbox, and Microsoft-account households that need screen-time, app, web, and device controls.
- Apple Screen Time and Family Sharing provide app limits, downtime, communication limits, content restrictions, purchase controls, and family management on supported Apple devices.
- Google Family Link is designed for Android and Chromebook households that need app approvals, screen-time limits, and device bedtime controls.
- Qustodio offers broader cross-platform screen-time, web, app, and activity supervision, but families should weigh the privacy implications of more extensive monitoring.
- Bark focuses on alerts about potentially dangerous messages and behavior across supported services. Its current Roblox coverage must be checked before purchase; no service should be assumed to inspect every Roblox interaction, private server, voice conversation, or off-platform exchange.
Paid parental-control services are supplementary. They cannot replace Roblox’s age checks, account linking, conversation with the child, evidence preservation, or emergency intervention. Pricing and supported-service lists change, so check the vendors’ current pages before buying.
