A short video that circulated on Chinese social media in late January 2025 shows a drone and a four-legged robot exchanging fireworks. It looks like a tiny robot war, but the footage does not establish that either machine was choosing targets or acting autonomously. The location, organizers and control setup were not publicly confirmed in the reporting.
What happens in the video?
In the roughly 10-second clip, a drone fires fireworks toward a robot dog on the ground. The quadruped shifts back and forth, appearing to evade the pyrotechnics, then fires fireworks toward the drone. The drone circles or maneuvers around it as the exchange continues. South China Morning Post’s report describes the clip and its sequence.
Calling this a “battle” is understandable as shorthand, but the visible projectiles are fireworks. The footage does not show military-grade weapons, target accuracy, or combat effectiveness. Nor does it establish where the video was filmed, who staged it, or whether it was a commercial, private, research or military demonstration.
What machines are they?
Media reports identified the aircraft as resembling a DJI T-series agricultural drone and the quadruped as possibly belonging to Unitree’s Go series. These are visual identifications, not confirmed model numbers released by the operators or manufacturers. The footage alone is not enough to identify a precise model.

Was the robot dog controlled by AI?
That is unknown. A machine moving in response to another object does not reveal who—or what—is making the decisions. A person could be controlling the robot or drone directly; a route could be preprogrammed; software could assist with balance or obstacle avoidance; or people and automated features could share control. SCMP reported that it was unclear whether either machine was remotely controlled or autonomous. BGR noted that a person holding what appeared to be a remote-control setup could be seen in the footage.
Those details matter because “AI” and “autonomous” can blur several different capabilities:

- Remote control: a person commands the machine’s movement or firing.
- Assisted or teleoperated control: software may stabilize movement or help avoid obstacles while a person remains responsible for decisions.
- Preprogrammed behavior: the machine follows a route or routine selected in advance.
- Autonomous navigation: the machine chooses how to move toward a goal.
- Autonomous targeting or engagement: the system identifies or selects a target, or decides to use force.
Walking, balancing or tracking an object does not by itself show that a robot can independently decide whom to attack. The clip demonstrates coordinated movement in a controlled-looking setup, but it does not reveal how much decision-making came from software and how much from operators.
Does it show what future warfare will look like?
Only in a limited, illustrative sense. Drones can approach from above, and legged robots can move over terrain that may challenge wheeled vehicles. In principle, unmanned systems could combine aerial observation with ground movement. Those are reasons such platforms attract attention—not proof that the specific machines in this video are military systems or ready for combat.

A fireworks exchange is not a meaningful test of the capabilities that would matter in a real conflict: identifying targets, distinguishing civilians from combatants, maintaining secure communications, navigating when positioning signals are disrupted, operating in smoke or darkness, delivering a payload reliably, or securing human authorization. It says nothing conclusive about reliability, resistance to hacking, or performance under battlefield conditions. These are general engineering and safety questions, not failures demonstrated by this clip.
Mobility is not the same as military autonomy. A robot can walk and a drone can fly without either system selecting a human target or deciding to use force. The video’s theatrical appearance invites viewers to imagine an automated battlefield, but it does not document one. The reviewed coverage does not identify the demonstration as an official Chinese military test.

How to assess claims about a robotics demonstration
Before treating a viral clip as evidence of an autonomous combat capability, look for basic details that this video’s reporting does not establish:
- A named operator, organization or event, and a link to the original upload.
- Confirmed machine models and a clear description of any payload.
- An explanation of which functions are remote-controlled, preprogrammed or autonomous.
- Evidence of autonomous perception or target tracking—and a distinction between tracking and selecting a target.
- A description of human authorization: who can approve, interrupt or stop an action?
- Test conditions, repeatable results, technical documentation or independent observers.
- Evidence that the machines operated without an unseen operator, and disclosure of what was scripted versus decided in real time.
Without that information, an impressive-looking clip can show a demonstration but cannot establish the underlying control system. Here, even the filming location and organizers remain unconfirmed in the cited reporting.

The more important question behind the spectacle
When machines are used in dangerous settings, the central issue is not just whether they can move or aim. It is who authorizes the use of force, who remains accountable for mistakes, and whether a person can meaningfully intervene. A short fireworks stunt cannot answer those questions. It can, however, make the distinction between a machine that moves automatically and one empowered to make consequential decisions harder to ignore.
