Microsoft and ASUS revealed two Xbox-branded handheld PCs on June 8, 2025: the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. Both launched on October 16, 2025; as of August 16, 2026, ASUS lists US prices of $599.99 and $999.99, respectively. They are ASUS-made Windows 11 gaming PCs with Xbox software—not portable Xbox consoles that natively run the entire Xbox console library.
What Microsoft and ASUS revealed
The announcement at the Xbox Games Showcase introduced two handhelds developed by ASUS in collaboration with Microsoft and Xbox. ASUS makes the hardware; Windows 11 Home provides the operating system, with an Xbox-focused interface and services layered on top. Microsoft described the partnership and Windows approach in its reveal announcement and Windows blog post.
The products are called ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. “Xbox Ally” is convenient shorthand, but the X is a separate, higher-spec model. They should not be confused with the earlier ROG Ally or the 2024 ROG Ally X.
Release date and US prices
ASUS announced the retail date on August 20, 2025, and the handhelds went on sale in select markets on October 16, 2025. They are established products, not unreleased devices. ASUS’s US listings show the standard ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99 and the ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99. Those are US store price signals, not guaranteed prices at every retailer or in other countries; check the current ASUS US listings for availability and promotions. The Ally X is the performance-oriented configuration, with a stronger processor, more memory, 1TB storage in the reveal specification and a larger battery than the base model. It also has higher-end USB4 connectivity. The base model’s US specification page lists a 500-nit display; consult the page for the exact SKU before comparing regional configurations. ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally product page and US model listings provide the product details.
Those component differences indicate more headroom on the Ally X, but they do not establish a specific frame-rate advantage. Actual performance and battery life depend on the game, power profile, resolution, refresh rate and graphics settings. A 120Hz screen does not mean every game will run at 120 frames per second.
Which model makes sense?
- Consider the ROG Xbox Ally if you want the Xbox-focused interface at the lower price and mostly play indies, older or less demanding PC games, or streamed games. Its 16GB of memory is a more modest starting point for demanding newer releases.
- Consider the ROG Xbox Ally X if you expect to play demanding PC games locally and value the stronger processor, 24GB memory, 1TB storage and larger battery. The $400 premium is substantial, so it makes most sense when those upgrades match how you play.
Without comparable independent testing, it would be misleading to promise a particular frame rate, battery runtime or universal performance uplift for either model.

What the Xbox branding adds
The main Xbox-specific change is a more controller-friendly experience on a Windows handheld. Microsoft and ASUS announced an Xbox full-screen experience, Xbox app integration, a dedicated Xbox button for Game Bar and quick controls, and a Library view that brings together games from supported PC storefronts. The devices also support Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Remote Play. The feature set is described in the Xbox reveal and on the Xbox handheld product page.
In practice, “Xbox” means several related things: an Xbox account and services; an Xbox-style interface; access to Windows PC games and apps; and routes to console games through supported streaming or Remote Play. The interface can make common gaming tasks feel more console-like, but it does not turn Windows into an Xbox console operating system. Users can still encounter Windows updates, desktop screens, separate launchers and game-specific setup.
Windows also gives the handheld access to PC storefronts beyond Microsoft’s, including Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net and Ubisoft Connect. Game compatibility and usability vary: a Windows game may install yet still have awkward controls, small text, launcher friction, anti-cheat restrictions or performance that calls for settings changes.

Which games can you play?
Windows PC games installed locally
Compatible PC games can be installed and run from supported Windows storefronts, including Xbox for PC and third-party launchers. These run locally on the handheld, subject to its hardware and each game’s requirements. Storefront access does not guarantee that every title is optimized for a small screen or built-in controls.
Xbox Play Anywhere games
For supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles, one digital purchase can provide access on Xbox consoles and Windows PC, with progression and achievements shared where supported. Microsoft said more than 1,000 games supported Play Anywhere at the reveal; that is a count of supported Play Anywhere titles, not the total number of games the handheld can play. Check a game’s listing for Play Anywhere support rather than assuming an Xbox purchase includes its PC version.
Cloud Gaming and Remote Play
Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported games over the internet; it does not install and render them locally like a Windows PC game. Access depends on the applicable subscription, region, network and game support. Remote Play streams from a compatible Xbox console you own, so the console and network conditions matter. These options can reach some console games without a Windows version, but neither guarantees access to every game in the Xbox console library.

Game Pass offer: check the terms
The Xbox product page advertises three months of Xbox Game Pass Premium with either handheld. Treat this as a promotional offer: availability, account eligibility, region and terms can vary or change, so confirm the offer at checkout. Game Pass can mean downloading PC games, streaming supported titles or accessing a catalog; the subscription does not make every console game downloadable locally on the handheld. Cloud access also requires a supported subscription and game.

Both models share a 7-inch 1080p, 120Hz touchscreen with FreeSync Premium and Windows 11 Home. Announced shared features include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, Xbox-style controls with contoured grips, full-size sticks, impulse triggers, HD haptics, a six-axis IMU, two assignable rear buttons, USB-C connectivity and a 3.5mm audio jack. Port and wireless details can differ by region or SKU, so use the relevant local specification page.

Demanding games may require lowering resolution or visual quality, selecting a frame-rate cap, using upscaling or choosing a different power profile. Higher power use can affect battery life; no single runtime applies across games and settings. Streaming shifts much of the rendering elsewhere but makes the experience more dependent on network quality.

The Xbox interface may reduce friction, but the Windows foundation remains important to the buying decision. If you want access to particular games, check whether each is a Windows PC release, Play Anywhere title, Cloud Gaming title or Remote Play candidate. Those are different paths to play, with different requirements.
How it compares with alternatives
- Steam Deck: a SteamOS-centered handheld for people who prioritize Steam integration and that software experience. It is a different ecosystem, not a Windows/Xbox substitute in every respect.
- ROG Ally X (2024): a distinct earlier Windows handheld using Ryzen Z1 Extreme. It may appeal at a discount, but it is not the ROG Xbox Ally X and does not have the same 2025 model identity.
- Lenovo Legion Go: another Windows handheld line worth comparing for its form factor and display options. Confirm the generation, current price and software features of the specific model before deciding.
- Gaming laptop: a better fit for sustained performance, a larger display and desktop productivity, but without a handheld’s integrated controls and compact play-anywhere form.
Who should buy an Xbox Ally?
The ROG Xbox Ally models are best understood as Windows gaming handhelds with a more prominent Xbox front end and service integration. The standard Ally suits buyers who want that approach at a lower price and can live with its more modest hardware. The Ally X is for buyers who will make use of its extra memory, storage and processor headroom for local PC gaming. Choose a Steam Deck if SteamOS is the priority, or a laptop if desktop flexibility and sustained performance matter more. If your main expectation is to install and play the whole Xbox console library locally, neither Xbox Ally is the right product: check for a PC version, Play Anywhere, Cloud Gaming or Remote Play title by title.
