Microsoft and ASUS unveiled the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X on June 8, 2025, and released them in supported markets on October 16, 2025. In 2026, they are best understood not as new Xbox consoles, but as ASUS Windows 11 gaming handhelds with an Xbox-focused interface, Xbox app integration and access to PC, cloud and Remote Play gaming.
The base Ally is the value option at about $599.99 in the US at launch. The Ally X launched at about $999.99 and adds a faster processor, more memory, double the storage and a larger battery. Neither device runs every Xbox console game locally, and Game Pass access depends on whether a title has a compatible PC version, Play Anywhere support, cloud availability or requires Remote Play.
What are the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X?
They are Xbox-branded ASUS handheld PCs running Windows 11 Home. Microsoft supplies the Xbox software experience and ecosystem integration; ASUS supplies the hardware. A full-screen Xbox mode is designed for controller navigation, while the underlying Windows desktop remains available for drivers, launchers, settings and ordinary PC use.

The interface reduces the friction of using Windows on a handheld, but it does not turn Windows into a console operating system. Updates, launchers, account sign-ins and game-specific configuration can still require desktop-style troubleshooting.

How Xbox Game Pass works on the handhelds
“Game Pass on the go” describes several different technologies. Knowing which one you are using matters for ownership, performance and internet requirements.

1. Native Windows PC gaming
Compatible PC games are downloaded to the SSD and rendered locally by the handheld. This includes PC Game Pass games and purchases from supported PC stores. Resolution, graphics settings, power mode, drivers and thermals determine performance. A Game Pass subscription does not turn an Xbox-console-only game into a native Windows game.
2. Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud-supported games run on Microsoft’s servers and stream to the device. A qualifying Game Pass subscription is required, and the experience depends on bandwidth, latency, Wi-Fi quality and regional service availability. Microsoft also supports streaming some eligible games that you own or purchase, subject to catalog and account restrictions. Cloud gaming is not an offline feature.
3. Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play streams games from your own Xbox console. The console must be configured for remote access, powered or in standby as required, connected to the internet and signed into the appropriate account. The game runs on your console, not in Microsoft’s cloud.

4. Xbox Play Anywhere
Supported Play Anywhere titles use one purchase and one save ecosystem across Xbox consoles, Windows PC and compatible handhelds. This is the clearest route from an Xbox purchase to local handheld play, but it applies only to participating games.

No. A console-owned Xbox game is not automatically a native Windows PC game. Local installation generally requires a compatible PC version, PC Game Pass entitlement or Play Anywhere support. Other titles may be playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play instead.
Game Pass catalogs vary by plan, platform, region and time. The aggregated library is a convenient launcher, not a compatibility override. Check the individual game’s Xbox, PC, Play Anywhere and cloud labels before buying a handheld for a particular title. See Microsoft’s handheld and Play Anywhere guidance.

What the differences mean in practice
- Performance: The Ally X’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and 24GB of faster memory give it the stronger hardware platform for demanding games. That is a specification-based advantage, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate.
- Storage: 512GB can fill quickly after Windows, launchers and a few large games. The X’s 1TB drive is more comfortable; both support storage expansion, including microSD.
- Battery: The X has a 33% larger capacity, but runtime still varies with game load, brightness, frame rate and power profile. Capacity is not a promised play-time figure.
- Portability: Both are substantial Windows handhelds. The X is 45g heavier.
- Display: Both use a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS panel. Neither has OLED, which may matter to buyers comparing premium alternatives.
- Connectivity: USB4 on the X is more flexible for fast peripherals and docks.
Price and availability
US launch pricing was approximately $599.99 for the ROG Xbox Ally and $999.99 for the Ally X. Prices, bundles and stock vary by country and retailer. Microsoft’s US listing showed the Ally X at $999.99 but out of stock when checked, so verify live availability before purchasing.
Xbox’s product page advertises three months of Game Pass Premium with the devices, described as nearly a $45 value. Redemption, eligibility, recurring billing and cancellation terms apply, and subscription pricing and catalogs can change.

Xbox full-screen mode presents installed games in a controller-friendly shell and can aggregate titles across storefronts. You can still leave it for the Windows desktop whenever a launcher, driver or setting requires it. That hybrid approach is more flexible than a closed console, but less immediate than a dedicated console-style system.
Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility Program tests and labels games intended to work well on supported handhelds. A label is a useful starting point, not a fixed frame-rate guarantee: patches, drivers, graphics settings and power modes still affect results.
The Ally X’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme includes an NPU. Microsoft has announced features such as Automatic Super Resolution and AI-generated highlight reels, but availability can depend on updates, supported games, model, region and rollout status. Treat features marked preview or coming soon on the Xbox product page accordingly.
Which model should you buy?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally when:
- You want Xbox integration and PC Game Pass at the lower entry price.
- You mostly play indies, older games or moderately demanding PC titles.
- You are comfortable managing storage with a microSD card or uninstalling games.
- You value portability more than maximum headroom.
At or near its original price, the base Ally is the better value for most Xbox-focused buyers.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X when:
- You regularly play demanding AAA games and want the higher-end hardware platform.
- You need 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage.
- The larger battery, impulse triggers and USB4 justify the premium.
- You want the strongest of these two devices and accept its roughly $400 launch-price premium.
The X is not automatically the better value. It makes sense when its extra capacity and performance address a real need, rather than simply because the model name is higher.
Who should skip both?
- Console purists: Windows maintenance remains part of ownership; suspend/resume and setup are not as appliance-like as on a dedicated console.
- OLED-first buyers: neither model has an OLED screen, making a Steam Deck OLED or another OLED handheld worth considering.
- Offline Xbox players: cloud and Remote Play require connectivity, while console-only games still need a console stream.
- Budget buyers: a conventional ROG Ally or another Windows handheld may offer better hardware per dollar if the Xbox interface is unimportant.
- Existing recent Ally owners: the upgrade is mainly about Xbox integration, ergonomics, battery, memory and processor—not a completely different category of device.
Buying checklist for Game Pass subscribers
- List the games you actually play and check for a PC version, Play Anywhere support or cloud availability.
- Decide how often you will play offline; favor installed PC games if travel connectivity is unreliable.
- Budget for storage expansion if choosing the 512GB model and installing large games.
- Compare the current regional price with ordinary ROG Ally, Steam Deck OLED and other Windows handheld options.
- Confirm the Game Pass trial’s redemption and recurring-subscription terms.
- Consider a case for travel and a dock if you want TV output, charging and wired peripherals; neither is required for handheld play.
Verdict
The ROG Xbox Ally is the sensible entry point for Xbox owners and Game Pass subscribers who want a Windows handheld with a more approachable Xbox interface. The ROG Xbox Ally X is the premium choice for buyers who will use its faster processor, 24GB memory, 1TB storage, larger battery and USB4. Neither replaces an Xbox console, and neither makes every Xbox game playable locally. Buy based on your library and connection habits—not the Xbox branding alone.
