The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are ASUS-made Windows 11 gaming handhelds with an Xbox-focused interface—not Microsoft-built Xbox consoles. They launched on October 16, 2025, and combine local PC gaming with access to Xbox services, other PC storefronts, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Remote Play. The key buying question is whether that mix of Xbox integration and Windows flexibility suits you.
What Microsoft and ASUS announced
Microsoft revealed two handhelds with ASUS and AMD at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 8, 2025: the ROG Xbox Ally and the more powerful ROG Xbox Ally X. ASUS makes and sells the hardware; both devices run Windows 11 Home. Xbox branding describes their software experience and service integration, not a new Xbox console platform. Microsoft’s announcement framed the partnership as combining Xbox’s gaming experience with Windows’ flexibility.
The original announcement pointed to a holiday 2025 release. The handhelds subsequently launched on October 16, 2025, initially in 45 countries, with more markets planned. Availability, stock and pricing now depend on region. The launch update is on Xbox Wire.

In the United States, ASUS’s product page listed the Ally X at $999.99 in the available pricing information. That is a dated ASUS USA price signal, not a guaranteed current price or a price for every region. The research did not establish a reliable U.S. price for the standard Ally, so check ASUS or local retailers for current availability and pricing.
The X’s larger battery, extra memory and storage, and higher-tier processor make it the more capable configuration on paper. It is also about 45g heavier, and its 120Hz display does not mean demanding games will run at 120 frames per second. Actual performance depends on the game, resolution, settings and power mode. Battery capacity alone cannot predict runtime: workload, brightness, frame rate and network use all matter.
How the Xbox interface works—and what remains Windows
The handhelds boot into a controller-friendly, full-screen Xbox experience intended to put games and the library ahead of the conventional Windows desktop. Microsoft describes a library that brings together Xbox and PC games, including games from Battle.net and other storefronts. The Xbox button provides shortcuts to the experience’s Home or Library views.

This is a front end over Windows 11, not a replacement operating system or a closed console environment. You can use the devices as Windows PCs, and you retain access to PC storefronts such as Steam and Battle.net. That openness is useful if your games and accounts are spread across services, but it also means launchers, sign-ins, updates, settings and compatibility questions remain part of the experience. ASUS describes the devices as portable PCs with a console-like interface and Windows flexibility on its product overview.
What can you play?
There are several distinct ways to play, and “Xbox games” can mean different things on this hardware:
- Native PC games: Install compatible PC games locally from Xbox and other Windows storefronts. This is the route for offline play, subject to the handheld’s hardware, storage and each game’s compatibility.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Eligible games can share supported purchases, saves, achievements and progression between Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and the handheld. This benefit applies to participating titles; owning an Xbox game does not automatically grant its PC version.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: Stream supported games over the internet. It requires an eligible subscription and a suitable connection; catalog, plan terms and availability vary by region and date.
- Xbox Remote Play: Stream from your own Xbox console. The console must be available and configured for Remote Play, and the experience depends on your home network and the connection where you are playing.
- Other PC stores: Steam, Battle.net and other Windows storefronts broaden the library, but each can involve separate accounts, launchers and game-specific compatibility.
Microsoft cited access to more than 1,000 games through the Xbox ecosystem in its reveal. That is not a promise that every Xbox console game installs and runs locally. A particular game may be available through a PC edition, Play Anywhere, cloud streaming or Remote Play—or may require a separate purchase. Compatibility can also depend on the storefront, DRM and anti-cheat system.

What the hands-on preview showed
In a short preview, VentureBeat reported playing Gears of War: Reloaded on the device and described the Xbox controls as working smoothly. The report also described a demonstration of broadcasting the game to a large-screen TV. That offers a glimpse of the controller layout and the full-screen interface in a controlled demo, but it is not a long-term review or evidence of typical battery life, sustained performance across a broad library, durability or how well Windows friction is addressed over months of use.
Which model makes sense?
- Consider the ROG Xbox Ally if you want the Xbox/Windows handheld experience at a lower tier and prioritize lower weight over the X’s extra memory, storage and battery capacity. Confirm its current local price before deciding; the cited official information did not establish a U.S. price.
- Consider the ROG Xbox Ally X if you expect to play demanding PC games, want more storage, value the larger battery, or want the stronger hardware configuration. Weigh those advantages against its extra weight and the cited $999.99 ASUS USA price.
- Consider another device—or your existing hardware if you mainly stream games, mostly play from Steam, or want the simplicity of a conventional console. A phone or tablet with a controller, an existing Xbox with Remote Play, or a Steam-focused handheld may be enough for your use.
Before buying, check whether your must-play games have Windows versions and work with your preferred launcher or anti-cheat system. Add the likely cost of storage, a case or a dock if you need them. A dock can connect a display and peripherals, but it does not turn the handheld into a full desktop gaming PC. How it compares with alternatives
The Steam Deck is the more natural starting point for someone whose library is primarily on Steam; it is not built around direct integration with Xbox console ownership. Other Windows handhelds, including ASUS’s 2024 ROG Ally X and earlier ROG Ally models, offer the broader Windows-PC approach without the newer Xbox-branded positioning. A discounted older device may be better value for a buyer who does not need that interface, though hardware and configuration differ. For mainly streamed play, a cloud-focused device—or a phone or tablet already on hand—may cost less than a gaming PC handheld.
The useful comparison is not simply which device has the “best” library. Consider where you own games, whether you need local play away from Wi-Fi, how much setup you will tolerate, and the full cost of the device and any subscriptions or accessories. The Xbox Ally’s differentiator is the Xbox-oriented layer over a flexible Windows gaming PC, not exclusive access to a separate console library.
