ROG Xbox Ally X: Current specs, price, Xbox features and buying advice (2026)

The ROG Xbox Ally X is already on sale. ASUS and Microsoft announced the Windows 11 handheld on June 8, 2025, and released it worldwide on October 16, 2025. It is an ASUS gaming PC with an Xbox-focused interface and services—not a conventional Xbox console.

In the United States, ASUS lists the Ally X at $999.99. Its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of memory, 1TB SSD and 80Wh battery make it a premium option for demanding PC games, while the Xbox Full Screen Experience makes Game Pass and multiple launchers easier to reach from a controller.

Buy it if you want the strongest Xbox-oriented Windows handheld, substantial battery capacity and broad PC-store access. Consider a Steam Deck OLED, Lenovo Legion Go, standard ROG Xbox Ally or discounted older ROG Ally X if your priorities are lower cost, OLED image quality, a larger screen, SteamOS simplicity or better value.

What the ROG Xbox Ally X actually is

ASUS provides the hardware, controls and ROG design; Microsoft provides the Xbox software layer, Xbox app integration and Game Pass positioning. The result is a Windows 11 gaming PC that boots into a controller-friendly Xbox interface while retaining the flexibility of a normal PC. Microsoft describes the partnership and multi-store approach in its announcement.

ASUS notes that specifications and availability can vary by market, so verify the regional configuration before ordering. The SSD is intended to be replaceable, but opening the handheld can affect warranty or damage coverage under local service terms; consult ASUS support before doing it.

Ryzen AI does not mean automatic gaming AI

The Z2 Extreme combines a CPU, integrated Radeon graphics and an NPU for AI workloads. The NPU is a platform capability, not a guarantee of higher frame rates. Current gaming benefits depend on software support, and launch-era reviews found limited practical gains from the AI hardware itself. Treat “AI” as future-facing unless a particular game or Windows feature documents a use.

Display and battery trade-offs

The 120Hz 1080p IPS panel is sharp and responsive, especially for lighter or competitive games, but it is not OLED and is not built around HDR contrast. The 80Wh battery is considerably larger than the standard Ally’s 60Wh unit. Runtime still changes with power mode, brightness, refresh rate, networking, game load, upscaling and frame generation; no single number represents every session.

What the Xbox Full Screen Experience changes

The Xbox interface starts the handheld in a full-screen, controller-first environment. It prioritizes Xbox libraries, Game Pass and installed PC games, reducing the need to operate tiny Windows controls with a stick. The Xbox app can also surface several non-Xbox launchers, while desktop mode remains available for configuration and troubleshooting.

  • Improves: controller navigation, library discovery, launching Game Pass titles and switching among handheld-focused controls.
  • Does not remove: launcher sign-ins, desktop dialogs, Windows updates, driver prompts, mouse-dependent games, anti-cheat restrictions or inconsistent sleep and wake behavior.
  • Still requires desktop mode: many mod managers, advanced graphics settings, file operations and some third-party launcher tasks.

Tom’s Hardware found the interface easier to navigate, while WIRED and TechRadar noted that Windows clutter and limitations remain. The software is a layer over Windows, not a replacement operating system.

2026 software status

In its April 30, 2026 update, Xbox described several improvements:

  • Collective-library changes bring games from more sources together.
  • Vibration behavior is enhanced.
  • Auto SR features were previewed or rolled out through supported software.
  • Some Game Bar features are expanding beyond the ASUS handhelds.

Rollout status depends on Windows, Xbox, Game Bar, Armoury Crate SE and AMD driver versions. A feature announced by Xbox may be released gradually, preview-only or unavailable in a particular region; update the relevant apps and check the device’s current release notes rather than assuming every unit is identical.

How fast is it in real games?

The Ally X is a strong Windows handheld, but performance is conditional. Plugged-in power limits, battery mode, resolution, graphics preset, drivers, upscaling and frame generation can change results substantially. The 120Hz panel does not imply 120 frames per second in modern AAA games.

  • Notebookcheck measured roughly a 14% advantage over the older Ally X and about 6% over MSI Claw 8 AI+ in its test suite; those percentages describe that suite, not every game.
  • Tom’s Hardware recorded 64 FPS at 720p plugged in and 79 FPS unplugged in its Shadow of the Tomb Raider test under its specified settings.

Demanding new releases commonly need 720p or 1080p upscaling, reduced settings, a lower power target or frame generation. Frame generation can make motion look smoother but may add latency or artifacts, so it is not free performance. Compare reviews only when wattage, resolution, settings, drivers and plugged-in state match.

Ally X versus the standard ROG Xbox Ally

Feature ROG Xbox Ally ROG Xbox Ally X
Processor AMD Ryzen Z2 A AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme
Memory 16GB 24GB
Storage 512GB 1TB
Battery 60Wh 80Wh
US official price signal $599.99 $999.99
Best suited to Older games, indies, cloud gaming and tighter budgets Demanding games and buyers wanting maximum headroom

The $400 difference buys more than frame rate: extra memory, double the listed storage and a substantially larger battery. The standard model is sensible when Game Pass streaming and lighter games matter more than the highest performance ceiling.

Is it a real Xbox console?

No—not in the traditional console sense. It is Xbox-branded and integrates Xbox software, PC Game Pass, cloud gaming and supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles. A qualifying Play Anywhere game can be used across Xbox, PC and supported handhelds without a second purchase, provided that title has a supported PC version.

It is not a Series X|S replacement with guaranteed console compatibility, and an Xbox console purchase does not automatically make every game installable on Windows. Cloud play also requires the appropriate subscription and a suitable internet connection.

Steam, Epic and other PC stores

Windows allows installation of Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, EA’s launcher and other applications. The full-screen Xbox layer can expose several of these libraries, but compatibility remains a per-game issue governed by launchers, DRM, anti-cheat, controller support, drivers and performance requirements. A launcher appearing in the interface does not guarantee that every title will work well.

Main drawbacks to budget for

  • Price: at $999.99 in the US, it competes with larger handhelds and discounted previous-generation models.
  • Windows friction: desktop dialogs, small touch targets, sign-ins, updates, sleep problems and occasional mouse-and-keyboard requirements remain.
  • LCD panel: the fast IPS screen lacks OLED’s black levels and contrast.
  • Weight: 715g is substantial for long handheld sessions, even if the contoured grips suit some hands.
  • Compatibility: kernel anti-cheat, always-online requirements, aggressive DRM, unsupported launchers and poor controller implementations can block or degrade games.
  • Storage pressure: modern games can exceed 100GB. The 1TB SSD is preferable to 512GB, but Windows and recovery partitions reduce usable space.
  • Docking cost and variability: TV play may require a USB-C dock, display cable and adequate power supply; display output, Ethernet and USB behavior vary by dock.

Which handheld should you buy?

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if

  • You want the most capable Xbox-oriented Windows handheld.
  • You play demanding AAA games and need 24GB RAM, 1TB storage and an 80Wh battery.
  • You use Game Pass or Play Anywhere while also buying from Steam or other stores.
  • You value integrated controls and docking more than OLED image quality or minimum weight.
  • You are comfortable spending about $1,000 before accessories and troubleshooting Windows.

Choose the standard ROG Xbox Ally if

  • Your budget is closer to $600.
  • You mainly play indies, older games or cloud-streamed titles.
  • You want the Xbox interface but do not need the Ally X’s memory, storage and battery headroom.

Choose a Steam Deck OLED if

You mainly play Steam games and prioritize SteamOS’s console-like flow, OLED contrast and straightforward suspend/resume. SteamOS’s compatibility layer and anti-cheat limitations mean it is not universally better for Windows launchers or every competitive game.

Choose a Lenovo Legion Go or Go 2 if

You want a larger display, detachable controllers or a tabletop setup and accept more Windows configuration. Tom’s Hardware highlighted the Legion Go 2’s detachable controls, OLED screen and higher-memory configurations, while noting that it did not offer the same Xbox Full Screen Experience at the time of testing.

Choose an older ROG Ally X if

It is heavily discounted and the price gap outweighs the new model’s larger battery, extra memory and newer Xbox integration. Compare the actual sale price rather than launch MSRP.

Practical checks before buying

  1. Confirm the local ASUS configuration, price, warranty terms and Game Pass promotion.
  2. Check each must-play game for anti-cheat, launcher and controller compatibility.
  3. Plan storage: reserve internal SSD space for demanding games and use a reputable high-speed microSD card for suitable titles.
  4. Budget for a dock, display cable and 65W-capable charger if TV or monitor play matters.
  5. Update Windows, Xbox, Game Bar, Armoury Crate SE and AMD drivers before judging interface or performance.
  6. Compare battery claims only when brightness, refresh rate, power mode, game, settings and plugged-in state are stated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ROG Xbox Ally X play every Xbox console game?

No. It plays supported Windows PC versions, Xbox Play Anywhere titles and cloud-streamed games; Xbox Series X|S compatibility is not universal.

Does it include Game Pass?

The Xbox product page has listed three months of Game Pass Premium with qualifying purchases, but tier, region, eligibility and redemption terms can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I connect it to a TV?

Yes. Use USB-C video output through a compatible dock or adapter. Xbox’s 2026 updates improved docked display switching, but dock power and output capabilities differ.

Is the display OLED?

No. It is a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS panel.

Can older Windows handhelds use the Xbox Full Screen Experience?

Some Xbox and Game Bar features are expanding to other Windows 11 PCs, but availability and feature parity depend on Microsoft’s rollout and device software.

The Bottom Line

The ROG Xbox Ally X is a premium Windows handheld with unusually deep Xbox integration, not a portable Series X. Its $999.99 US price makes sense when 24GB RAM, 1TB storage, an 80Wh battery, multi-store access and stronger performance matter more than OLED quality, low weight or lowest cost.
