The preview began on March 2, 2026, and currently requires background recording plus a supported game. It is not yet a universally available, finished recording mode for every Ally X owner.
As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft’s public product page still describes Highlight Reels as “coming soon,” while eligible Insiders can access the test through Game Highlights (Preview) in the Xbox PC app.
What Highlight Reels does
Highlight Reels is different from pressing a capture button yourself. With ordinary gameplay capture, you decide when to save a clip. With Highlight Reels, you enable background recording, play a supported title, and let Gaming Copilot capture selected moments during the session. When the session ends, the Xbox PC app automatically assembles those clips into a reel you can view and share.
Microsoft calls the feature AI-powered, but it has not published the scoring method, clip length, editing controls, storage limits, export resolution, or a guarantee that every reel will contain the moments you consider important. “AI-assisted” is therefore a more precise description than a promise that the system always identifies your best plays.

Who can use it right now?
The verified access requirement is participation in the Xbox Insider Program. Availability can also depend on the preview software installed on the handheld and Xbox PC app, your region, recording settings, and whether the game is supported.
Microsoft’s March 2 announcement invited Xbox Insiders to try the feature; it did not announce a general-release date. The announcement concerns the ROG Xbox Ally X, not automatically the lower-tier ROG Xbox Ally.
How to enable Highlight Reels
- Join the Xbox Insider Program if you are not already enrolled.
- On the handheld, press the Command Center button.
- Open Settings.
- Select More Settings, then Widgets.
- Enable Record in the background while playing a game.
- Launch a supported game and play normally.
- After ending the session, open the game’s page in the Xbox PC app.
- Select Game Highlights (Preview) to view and share the generated reel.
Microsoft says there are other ways to change the recording setting, but the path above is the documented handheld route in the preview announcement. A reel is not guaranteed after every session: unsupported games, disabled recording, or preview bugs can leave you with no usable result.
Which games are supported?
The initial announcement names Forza Horizon 5 and Overwatch, along with an initial selection of other titles that Microsoft does not list completely in that announcement. Treat those two games as confirmed examples, not as an exhaustive or permanent compatibility list.

Is the feature really using AI?
Microsoft attributes the capture behavior to Gaming Copilot and lists Highlight Reels among the Ally X’s AI-oriented preview features. The handheld uses an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor with an NPU, which Microsoft and ASUS position as the platform for AI-related functions.
Neither the announcement nor the linked product information explains which model detects moments, whether processing happens locally or in the cloud, what gameplay signals are analyzed, or how captured data is handled. Do not assume that the NPU independently understands every game or that the feature works offline.
Where the reel appears—and what remains unspecified
The verified destination is the game page in the Xbox PC app, under Game Highlights (Preview). Microsoft says the resulting clips can be shared with friends online.
Microsoft has not publicly specified:
- where clips are stored locally, if they are stored locally;
- maximum storage allocation or retention time;
- clip duration, resolution, frame rate, or export format;
- which sharing destinations are supported;
- whether reels synchronize across devices;
- whether clips remain available after leaving the Insider preview.
Privacy details are also incomplete. The announcement does not say whether footage or gameplay metadata is uploaded, whether voice chat or usernames can appear, or whether particular games or sessions can be excluded.
Background recording trade-offs
Background recording can use storage bandwidth, memory, processing time, and battery. Microsoft has not published a quantified performance or battery penalty for Highlight Reels, so claims of “no performance hit” are not established.

The Ally X has an 80Wh battery, but battery life varies with game, resolution, frame-rate limit, brightness, and operating mode. That headline capacity does not prove that recording is cost-free.

- Confirm that the device is enrolled in the Xbox Insider Program.
- Recheck Command Center → Settings → More Settings → Widgets.
- Confirm that Record in the background while playing a game is enabled.
- Test a named supported title such as Forza Horizon 5 or Overwatch.
- Complete a full play session before looking for the reel.
- Open the game page in the Xbox PC app and look for Game Highlights (Preview).
- If it remains unavailable, use the Xbox Insider Hub’s feedback or reporting tools.
Preview builds can change labels and behavior, so a missing menu can indicate rollout timing or a software issue rather than a hardware fault. Update behavior and restart requirements may differ by preview build.

These specifications come from Microsoft’s ROG Xbox Ally page. ASUS also describes Windows game access and conventional Xbox Game Bar capture, but ordinary Game Bar recording is not the same as Gaming Copilot’s automatic reel generation.
Should you buy the ROG Xbox Ally X for this feature?
Buy the Ally X for its overall handheld package—Windows and Xbox integration, performance, display, memory, storage, and battery capacity—not solely for Highlight Reels. The feature is still an Insider preview, has limited game support, and lacks published details about processing, storage, privacy, and export.
Existing owners who meet the Insider requirement should try the preview if automatic clips are useful to them. Prospective buyers should treat Highlight Reels as an experimental bonus until Microsoft confirms stable, broad availability.
Current verdict
“Can now use AI to capture gameplay highlights” is accurate only when it means eligible Xbox Insiders can test Microsoft’s AI-assisted Highlight Reels on the ROG Xbox Ally X. It does not mean every Ally X has the feature, every game supports it, or that a polished reel will be produced after every session.
