Microsoft’s Default Game Profiles can now automatically apply per-game frame-rate and TDP settings on the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. The feature is designed primarily to balance smoothness and battery use when playing supported games on battery, rather than act as a universal real-time “Auto TDP” system.
Microsoft expanded the catalog on May 4, 2026, adding more than two dozen games to the 40 titles it described as supported at launch. The catalog remains title-dependent and continues to evolve.
What Default Game Profiles actually change
A Default Game Profile is a pre-tested, per-game configuration delivered through Xbox services and applied through ASUS software, including Armoury Crate. Depending on the title and profile, it can configure or constrain:
- TDP: the handheld’s power and performance envelope.
- Frame rate: a target or limit intended to avoid wasting power on frames the device cannot sustain efficiently.
- Potentially resolution or related settings: Microsoft has mentioned resolution in developer-facing material, but its consumer announcements emphasize TDP and FPS controls rather than promising a resolution change for every profile.
Microsoft says its testing process uses performance and battery-life testing across many games to find settings that can stabilize gameplay above a minimum 30 FPS target. That is a tuning objective, not a guarantee that every scene will hold 30 FPS.

The key distinction is that these are pre-tested game profiles. They are not necessarily a feedback controller that recalculates the ideal power limit every second based on the current frame rate.
Microsoft’s feature announcement describes the profile system, while its May 2026 update explains how support has expanded.
Battery use is the main target
Default Game Profiles are primarily intended to improve the experience while the handheld is running on battery. A game may receive a lower power limit or a sensible FPS cap instead of running at the highest possible performance setting at all times.

That can reduce unnecessary power draw and make frame delivery more consistent, but Microsoft does not promise a universal percentage improvement or a fixed number of extra minutes. Results depend on the game, display brightness, refresh rate, background activity, graphics settings, battery condition, and whether the device is plugged in.
Plugged-in behavior may differ from battery behavior. Users who want maximum performance while connected to power may still prefer a manual Armoury Crate profile with a higher power limit.
Which devices support the feature?
The documented compatibility target is the two newer Xbox-branded ASUS handhelds:
- ROG Xbox Ally
- ROG Xbox Ally X
Do not assume that the original 2023 ROG Ally, the original ROG Ally X, or another Windows handheld receives the same Microsoft Default Game Profiles. “ROG Ally” is used for several generations of hardware, so the exact model matters.
Which games and stores are supported?
Microsoft’s documented scope centers on games sold through the Xbox Store on PC. A supported Xbox PC title may receive a profile when launched through the Xbox app or the relevant Xbox PC installation path, but not every Xbox PC game necessarily has one.

Microsoft initially described the first wave as covering “nearly 70” popular games, while a later update referred to 40 launch-supported titles and more than two dozen additions. Those figures may describe different stages or lists, so they should not be treated as one definitive permanent catalog. Check the device and Microsoft’s latest published information for current coverage.
How to check or toggle a profile
- Install available Windows, Xbox and Armoury Crate updates on an eligible ROG Xbox Ally or Ally X.
- Launch a supported game through the Xbox PC Store or Xbox app.
- Press the Xbox button to open Game Bar.
- Open the Armoury Crate Command Center Game Bar widget.
- Check whether a Default Game Profile has been applied.
- Use the widget to view or toggle the profile when that option is available.
Armoury Crate labels can change between software versions, so the exact wording and placement may not match every device. If the profile is unavailable, Armoury Crate’s per-game controls remain the fallback.
Profiles are designed to apply while the game is in focus. When you switch to another application, the game-specific settings turn off; they reapply when you return to the game. This prevents a game’s power or frame-rate limit from unnecessarily affecting unrelated desktop activity.
Default Game Profiles are not the same as other “automatic” features
Not universal Auto TDP
Auto TDP usually means a utility dynamically changing the power limit in real time to pursue a chosen frame rate. Default Game Profiles are different: they are distributed per-game settings based on testing. Calling them “automatic tuning” is reasonable for the user experience, but calling them a universal real-time Auto TDP system is misleading.
Not VRR
Variable refresh rate changes how the display refreshes to better follow rendered frames. It can make uneven output look smoother, but it does not choose a TDP limit or create a game profile.
Not frame generation
Frame generation inserts generated frames between rendered frames. A profile’s FPS cap or target is simply a performance control and does not mean frame generation has been enabled.
Not Auto SR
Microsoft’s Auto Super Resolution preview is a separate AI upscaling feature associated with the ROG Xbox Ally X preview program. It concerns image reconstruction and rendering resolution, not the same FPS-and-TDP balancing system.

If no profile appears, work through these checks:
- Update Windows, Xbox components and Armoury Crate.
- Confirm that the handheld is an eligible ROG Xbox Ally model.
- Check that the title was installed and launched through the Xbox PC Store or Xbox app.
- Close and relaunch the game.
- Open the Armoury Crate Command Center widget while the game is in the foreground.
- Restart the handheld if the profile state appears stuck.
- Use a manual Armoury Crate game profile if the title is unsupported or the automatic profile does not appear.
A game update can also change performance characteristics. A profile created around an earlier version may no longer be ideal after a major patch, particularly with mods, custom resolutions, unusual graphics presets or external displays.

What if the profile causes stutter or lower performance?
Disable the profile or replace it with a manual profile if frame pacing becomes uneven, the game falls below its intended target, or demanding scenes become unstable. A battery-oriented TDP limit can reduce the CPU or GPU headroom available during heavy effects, shader compilation or crowded scenes.
Microsoft’s developer discussion on handheld testing also notes that overly aggressive TDP reductions can create stability problems in some titles. That is useful context, not a guarantee that every profile will suit every graphics configuration.
Manual controls are still useful for choosing a lower cap for quieter play, a 30 or 40 FPS target for battery-focused sessions, or a higher limit when plugged in. There is no single correct TDP value for every game, so avoid treating a profile as a permanent lock.

The feature is primarily framed around battery operation, so do not assume that a battery-oriented profile is optimal while docked. When connected to power, users may reasonably prefer higher performance or a different FPS limit. The profile system does not make manual docked and handheld configurations unnecessary.
What this means when choosing between the Ally and Ally X
Default Game Profiles make supported Xbox PC games easier to configure on both current Xbox-branded ROG handhelds. They do not remove the larger hardware differences between them.
The ROG Xbox Ally has 16GB of memory, a 512GB SSD, a 60Wh battery and a 7-inch 1080p/120Hz display. The ROG Xbox Ally X adds a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and an 80Wh battery, along with separate Auto SR preview support.
The base Ally is the more value-oriented choice for supported Xbox PC games, indie titles, older games and less demanding releases. The Ally X is better suited to buyers who want more memory, storage, battery capacity and performance headroom. Neither model turns a large Steam, Epic or emulator library into a universally automatic experience; those games may still require manual tuning.

The bottom line
Default Game Profiles reduce setup work by automatically applying title-specific FPS and TDP settings on supported Xbox PC games, especially during battery play. They can help balance smoothness and energy use, but they do not guarantee a fixed frame rate, a specific battery-life gain or better performance in every scene.
The feature is most useful for owners who play supported games through the Xbox ecosystem and do not want to configure every title by hand. Enthusiasts, Steam-heavy users and players with mods or unusual settings should continue to treat Armoury Crate’s manual controls as essential.
