Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal future remained unresolved after he left the national team’s training camp, while Ousmane Dembélé denied claims of a feud with Kylian Mbappé. In an Associated Press report published by the Irish Examiner on 1 October 2026, Ronaldo had promised to explain his departure later, but had not yet given his reasons. Is he done with Portugal, or will he make peace with his coach and return for the next international break? The report did not answer that question.
Why did Ronaldo leave Portugal’s camp?
Ronaldo left the training camp after coach Jorge Jesus said the forward would not start Portugal’s match against Denmark. Ronaldo said he would explain his reasons “in due course” and asked to “tell the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons,” according to the Associated Press report published by the Irish Examiner on 1 October 2026. The report did not include his explanation, and Portugal’s football federation offered few details.
That leaves the central issue unresolved: the report establishes that Ronaldo departed after learning he would not start, but does not establish why he left or whether he had permission to do so.
Could Ronaldo be suspended or fined?
The report said Portuguese federation disciplinary rules provide for a suspension of one to six months and a fine if a player abandons or misses national-team activities without justification. It also described the rules as providing for automatic preventive suspension. As of the report’s publication on 1 October 2026, it was unclear whether the federation considered Ronaldo’s departure unjustified; the report did not say that any punishment had been imposed.

What could happen next for Ronaldo?
At the report date, three outcomes remained possible, but none was confirmed:
- Return to Portugal: Ronaldo could resolve the matter with Jesus and rejoin the national team. The report did not confirm a return or give a timetable.
- Continued absence or retirement: Speculation about a permanent break from international football was not a confirmed decision. Ronaldo had not announced retirement in the report.
- Federation discipline: The federation could consider disciplinary action if it found his departure unjustified. The report did not establish whether it would do so.
Portugal gave No. 7 to Rafael Leão after Ronaldo left the roster. The report said UEFA rules required the number to be assigned to another player; the reassignment did not establish Ronaldo’s longer-term status with Portugal.

What did Dembélé say about Mbappé?
Speaking ahead of France’s game against Italy, Dembélé rejected online claims of tension between himself and Mbappé. “No, nothing. I don’t comment on all of these stories,” he said, according to the Associated Press report published by the Irish Examiner on 1 October 2026. He added: “I don’t comment on little squabbles on social media. At 29 years old, I’m not really thinking about that.”
Dembélé praised Mbappé’s contribution to France, saying: “He’s scored an enormous amount of goals. When he’s here we’re very happy because he brings something extra.” He also stressed the importance of the team: “We don’t win with one, two, or three players.” These remarks record Dembélé’s public response; they do not independently establish either player’s private feelings.
