A rotating minimap keeps the direction you are moving at the top; a traditional north-up minimap keeps the map fixed while your marker turns. The difference is a trade-off: movement-up can make the next turn easier to follow, while north-up can make it easier to keep a stable picture of the surrounding layout. Neither orientation is best for every game or player.
What does “rotating map puzzle” mean?
“Rotating map puzzle” is not a standard category in the cited studies. Here, it describes the small navigation challenge of interpreting your position and direction when a minimap rotates—or stays fixed—as you move. The key distinction is the map’s orientation, not a separate game genre.
How do rotating and north-up minimaps work?
Rotating or movement-up
The map turns as you change direction so the direction you are travelling remains at the top. If you turn right, the map rotates around your marker to keep your new forward direction pointed upward. This matches the player’s immediate, forward-looking view, reducing the need to mentally turn the map to work out which way to go. Anthony J. Aretz describes this as alignment with an egocentric forward view in “The Design of Electronic Map Displays” (1991).
Fixed or north-up
The map stays oriented with north at the top. When you turn right, the map remains still and your marker’s heading changes. This gives landmarks and directions a consistent reference, but you may need to relate your heading to the map before following a route. Aretz notes that north-up stability can aid cognitive-map acquisition, while mental rotation can be a cost for tasks focused on the forward view.

Which orientation is easier to follow while moving?
Movement-up can be easier when the immediate question is “Which way do I go now?” Because the direction of travel stays at the top, the map’s orientation corresponds to the player’s forward view. That may help when following turns or navigating an unfamiliar route without first translating between the character’s heading and the map.
North-up can be easier when you want to understand how places relate to one another beyond the next turn. A stable map lets you see the same landmark in the same relative direction as you rotate or travel, which may support building a broader mental picture. The trade-off is that you may need to mentally rotate that picture to match the direction your character faces.

What do navigation studies show?
A controlled game-maze comparison
A York University experiment compared a still minimap, with north at the top, against a rotating minimap, with the participant’s movement direction at the top. Both minimaps performed well in that maze task. The rotating minimap’s path efficiency was comparable to the study’s direct navigation-line condition, and participants’ subjective ratings for the two minimaps were statistically similar. The authors summarized the result this way: “Notably, rotating the mini-map (i.e., forward is always up) worked better, despite participant preference for the non-rotating variant.” That finding concerns the experiment’s specific navigation task, not every game or player. See the York University study and discussion.
In the same experiment, the navigation-line condition averaged 21.6 seconds per waypoint, and both minimaps were significantly faster than the arrow, light-pillar and compass conditions. That is a result from one experimental setup, not a general benchmark for game navigation.

A computer-based navigation task
A 2001 study comparing north-up and track-up map displays found neither orientation more accurate or faster in its task. Participants using track-up reported greater difficulty and rated it less helpful. The result shows why performance and subjective workload should be considered separately: a display can perform adequately on a measured task without feeling easier to use. See Cuevas et al., “Performance Differences in a Navigation Task among Users Presented with a North-Up versus Track-Up Orientation Map Display”.
How should you choose a minimap orientation?
There is no universal winner. The useful choice depends on what the player needs to do and how the rest of the game communicates space.

- Choose movement-up when: the priority is following a route or acting on the next turn, especially when the player benefits from a map that matches the forward view.
- Choose north-up when: the priority is keeping a consistent overview or learning where landmarks and routes sit relative to one another.
- Consider offering both: players differ in what feels clear, and the cited studies do not establish one orientation as best across games. If a game offers a toggle, trying each mode in the same familiar area can show which reference is easier for your own route-following and spatial understanding.
These are design considerations, not prescriptions. A game’s environment, navigation demands, map size and player preference can all affect which view feels clearer. The York maze experiment used a controlled setting and a limited participant group; it cannot settle the choice for every game.

When the map rotates with every change of heading, landmarks and directions move around the screen. That can make a local turn easier to read while making the larger layout feel less stable. With north-up, the player marker turns instead, so the map itself remains a steady reference. The difference is between aligning the display to the immediate direction of travel and keeping the same orientation for broader spatial learning—not a simple test of which mode is objectively easier.
