RPCS3 added a Create Steam Shortcut command in March 2026. It lets you select a configured PS3 game in RPCS3 and create a local Steam library entry that launches that title without first navigating the emulator’s game list. This is a convenience feature—not native Steam support, a Steam purchase, or a change to how well a game emulates.
What the new RPCS3-to-Steam workflow does
Previously, you generally launched a PS3 game from RPCS3, or added the emulator to Steam yourself and configured a game-specific target or launch argument. The new command automates creation of a per-game Steam shortcut from RPCS3’s game-management menu. The feature was reported on March 16, 2026; no dependable RPCS3 version number has been established, so availability depends on using a build that includes the change. GamingOnLinux reported the announcement, and IT之家 documented the menu path.
The shortcut is intended to launch the selected game directly rather than merely opening RPCS3’s main interface. It changes how you start the game, not the emulator, its performance, or its compatibility.

What “in your Steam library” means
The entry is a local, non-Steam shortcut in the Steam client. It does not register the PS3 game as a product you own on Steam, grant a Steam license, or turn it into an official PlayStation PC release. Steam friends may see it as a non-Steam game.

Steam’s own client notes on non-Steam shortcuts provide context for how Steam handles these entries; they do not make an emulated game a Steam product.
How to add an RPCS3 game to Steam
- Open RPCS3 normally and confirm the game appears in its game list.
- Right-click the game you want to add.
- Choose Manage Game, then select Create Steam Shortcut.
- Allow RPCS3 to create the shortcut. Menu wording or behavior may differ by build.
- Open Steam and look for the new local, non-Steam entry. If it is not visible, fully exit and restart Steam; reported behavior indicates a restart may be needed.
- Launch the entry and check that it opens the intended game.
If the command is missing, check that your RPCS3 build includes the feature and update through the project’s official channel if needed. Do not rely on a version number: none is firmly established for this change.
Get the game working in RPCS3 first
A Steam shortcut cannot fix a game that fails in the emulator. RPCS3 is an open-source PS3 emulator for Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD, but platform and build behavior can differ. Before creating the shortcut, launch the game directly from RPCS3 and confirm that the setup you intend to use works.

- Install the required official PS3 firmware and ensure RPCS3 recognizes your legally obtained game files. RPCS3’s setup guidance covers installation and emphasizes legal acquisition.
- Check the game’s region and title ID, then configure any required updates, DLC, patches, controller mapping, renderer, resolution scale, and per-game settings.
- Confirm the save-data location and test a normal boot before relying on the Steam entry.
Compatibility is specific to a game ID, and disc and digital releases can have separate records. Check the RPCS3 compatibility wiki for the matching release and the official compatibility list for its status. “Playable” means a title can generally be completed with playable performance and without game-breaking glitches; it is not a guarantee of flawless results on every system or configuration.
Using the shortcut on Steam Deck and other handheld PCs
The main benefit on a handheld is convenience: you can select an individual PS3 game from a Steam-centered interface instead of opening RPCS3 and navigating its list. It can also suit a living-room PC used primarily with a controller. It is not a guarantee of identical one-click behavior across devices.
Steam Deck and SteamOS
You may need to create the entry from RPCS3 in Desktop Mode and then use it in Game Mode. If it works on the desktop but not in Game Mode, check whether Steam can access the shortcut’s executable and game directory, whether both apps are running under the same user account, and whether a removable drive is mounted. Verify that compatibility settings and controller configuration are attached to the game shortcut you launch. Community reports describe missing entries and launch differences, but they are anecdotal rather than official support guidance: Steam Deck RPCS3 shortcut reports and Game Mode launch reports.

Windows handhelds
On devices such as the ROG Ally or Legion Go, RPCS3 and Steam run as Windows applications. Paths, permissions, and controller behavior still depend on your installation and configuration; using Windows does not make the shortcut an official Steam game.

Other Linux setups
Linux distributions can differ in library paths, executable permissions, sandboxing, and Flatpak access. If RPCS3 or Steam is sandboxed, confirm that both can reach the game files and that Steam can launch the selected RPCS3 setup. Proton or other compatibility settings may affect the wrapper process even when RPCS3 itself is running as a Linux application.
When the built-in shortcut is enough—and when it is not
For a small or medium library, RPCS3’s command is the simpler route: it creates a per-game entry without requiring you to construct a custom launch string. It is also a better fit for someone who wants to pick a PS3 title from Steam Big Picture or a handheld’s Game Mode.

A library manager such as Steam ROM Manager may suit a large collection spanning several emulators, especially if you want batch scanning and artwork or metadata workflows. Its parsers and file-layout assumptions can require their own troubleshooting, so it is not automatically a better choice for a few RPCS3 games. Community reports describe configuration issues with PS3 formats: EmuDeck reports and Steam Deck setup reports.

The shortcut does not appear
- Fully exit Steam, then relaunch it; closing a window may leave the client running.
- Check Steam’s non-Steam or local-library entries.
- Confirm RPCS3 could write the shortcut configuration and that you are checking the same Steam account and installation.
- Test the game directly in RPCS3 before creating anything again.
- If you moved the emulator or game files, remove the stale shortcut and create a fresh one from the current RPCS3 setup. Avoid repeatedly creating duplicates.
The shortcut opens RPCS3 but not the game
Check for a moved game directory or emulator installation, inaccessible Linux paths or missing executable permissions, a stale shortcut, a wrapper or compatibility-layer mismatch, or a game that relies on per-title settings. Launch the game directly from the current RPCS3 installation, confirm its configuration, delete the broken shortcut, and recreate it. On Linux, ensure both RPCS3 and Steam can access the executable and game directories.

Treat this first as a SteamOS or handheld integration issue, not proof that the emulation itself is broken. Check executable and game-file access, the Steam user account, compatibility settings, removable-drive availability, and which shortcut has the controller layout assigned.

The title or artwork looks wrong
The command is a launch workflow, not a complete metadata-management system. Edit the Steam shortcut’s name or artwork manually, or use a separate artwork tool if presentation matters.
What the shortcut cannot change
Launching through Steam does not improve CPU or GPU performance, shader-compilation stutter, SPU timing, graphics glitches, save compatibility, or peripheral support. It does not restore PlayStation Network services or make a title’s original online services available. Those depend on RPCS3, the specific game, its servers or RPCN support, and the game’s compatibility—not on the Steam shortcut.
RPCS3 is an emulator; firmware and game-acquisition rules vary by jurisdiction. Use firmware and game dumps you are legally entitled to possess and use, as described in RPCS3’s official guidance.
