rshx32.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Security Shell Extension, so do not replace it with a random DLL download. If Windows reports that rshx32.dll is missing, not found, corrupt, or incompatible, repair Windows first with DISM and System File Checker.
What this file actually does
rshx32.dll is a Windows shell extension supplied by Microsoft Corporation. It integrates security-related functions into Windows Explorer, including the Security tab shown in the properties of files and folders.
It is a COM component rather than a general-purpose runtime such as Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET. There is no reliable evidence that reinstalling Visual C++ 2015 repairs this particular file. That advice usually confuses rshx32.dll with files such as vcruntime140.dll.
The file is normally protected by Windows servicing. Its expected locations are:

%windir%System32rshx32.dllfor the native system copy. On 64-bit Windows,System32contains 64-bit system files.%windir%SysWOW64rshx32.dllfor the 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows.%windir%System32rshx32.dllon 32-bit Windows.
The names are counterintuitive because of Windows-on-Windows 64-bit redirection. A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows normally accesses the SysWOW64 copy through that redirection.
Historical Microsoft registry documentation associates the shell extension with CLSID {1F2E5C40-9550-11CE-9888-00AA006E086C}. You do not normally need to edit this registration manually.
Some public metadata lists Windows versions including 10.0.14393.0, 10.0.10586.0, and 6.3.9600.16384, with slightly different 32-bit and 64-bit file sizes. These are reference details, not a download matrix. Windows should restore the copy that matches your installed build.
rshx32.dll causes by symptom

The exact wording varies by Windows version and by the application that displays the message. A loader message alone does not prove that rshx32.dll itself is missing.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the correct first repair when the file is missing from %windir%System32 or %windir%SysWOW64.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Select Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run the following commands separately. Wait for the first command to finish before starting the second:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Then run:
sfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows component store and supplies a repair source for SFC. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies where possible.
What success looks like
DISM should complete without an error. SFC may report that it:

- Found corrupt files and repaired them.
- Found corrupt files but could not repair some of them.
Restart Windows after the commands finish, even if SFC reports that it repaired the file. Try the affected program again and open a file or folder’s Properties dialog to check whether the Security tab works.
If SFC cannot repair every file, do not download rshx32.dll. Run DISM first if you did not already do so, restart, and run SFC again. For more detail, review:

If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the repair source. It must match the installed Windows version and servicing branch. Using an arbitrary source can produce another mismatch.
Repeating SFC without repairing its underlying component store usually does not add useful information. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows what needs attention, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft DISM/SFC remain the primary path for this Windows component.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
A failed update, upgrade, or servicing operation can leave protected files inconsistent.
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when asked.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional update is offered.
- Run DISM and SFC again if the error remains.
Windows 10
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
- Run the two repair commands again if necessary.

- Select System → Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Availability depends on the Windows installation.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
If the file disappeared immediately after a security alert, check whether Defender removed it.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and expand any item related to
rshx32.dll.
Do not restore or allow the file solely because an application says it needs it. First verify all of the following:
- The file is in the expected Windows directory.
- Its publisher is Microsoft Corporation.
- Its digital signature is valid.
- The alert is consistent with a false positive rather than suspicious tampering.
If the quarantined copy was unsigned, appeared outside the Windows directory, or was associated with other suspicious activity, leave it quarantined and run Microsoft Defender scans. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead of restoring an untrusted copy.

Fix 4: Repair the affected application
If Windows works normally and only one program reports the error, the program may have damaged installation files, a private copy of the DLL, or another missing dependency.
First determine whether the failure is application-specific:
- Start another program.
- Open File Explorer.
- Right-click a file or folder and select Properties.
- Check whether normal Windows security properties open.
- Try the affected application again after restarting Windows.
If only one application fails:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If there is no Repair option, use the application’s own repair utility or launcher verification feature. For a game, use the publisher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or equivalent function rather than copying a DLL beside the game executable.
If repair does not work:
- Back up the application’s documents and settings if needed.
- Uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the publisher’s official source.
- Install it again.
- Apply its supported updates.
Reinstalling the affected program is the definitive application-level fix when its own files are damaged. It is not a substitute for repairing Windows when the system copy of rshx32.dll is missing.
Fix 5: Check whether the problem is a dependency or architecture mismatch
The message “The specified module could not be found” can mean that rshx32.dll is present but a dependency it needs cannot be loaded.
Check the file directly:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Select OK.
- Search for
rshx32.dll. - Repeat with:
%windir%SysWOW64
on 64-bit Windows.
Do not assume that a file in one directory can replace the other. A 32-bit DLL cannot substitute for a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit DLL cannot substitute for a 32-bit DLL.
To check the file’s basic identity:
- Right-click
rshx32.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Confirm the description is Security Shell Extension and the product identifies Microsoft Windows.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
- Confirm Windows reports that the digital signature is valid.
The exact version depends on the installed Windows build. Do not use a “latest” file from an archive as an architecture or version solution.
If the file is present, signed, and in the correct Windows directory, but one application still fails, repair that application. If multiple Windows functions fail, return to DISM and SFC.
Fix 6: Use System Restore for a recent change
System Restore can help when the error began after a driver, application, update, or system-setting change.
- Select Start.
- Type
create a restore point. - Open Create a restore point.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can reverse recent system changes and uninstall or roll back affected software. After restoration, install pending Windows updates and run DISM/SFC if the issue remains.

If no restore point exists, this option is unavailable.
Fix 7: Perform an in-place Windows repair
Use an in-place repair when:
- DISM and SFC cannot restore the component.
- Windows Update repair does not resolve the issue.
- Several Windows components are malfunctioning.
- You need to preserve installed apps and personal files.
Use official Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture. Start setup.exe from within Windows and select Keep personal files and apps when offered.
Do not boot from the media and choose a clean installation if your goal is to preserve programs and settings. Microsoft’s installation-media reinstall guide explains the supported process.
Back up important files before beginning. If the installer does not offer the option to keep personal files and apps, stop and check that the media matches the installed Windows edition and language.
Fix 8: Scan or clean-install after suspected malware
A valid Microsoft signature and the correct Windows path make a counterfeit file less likely, but they do not by themselves explain every failure.

Run Microsoft Defender when:
- The file exists outside the Windows directory.
- Its signature is missing or invalid.
- The error appeared with other unexplained behavior.
- Defender has reported related threats.
- The file keeps changing or returning.
After backing up personal documents, use Microsoft Defender’s available scan options. If compromise is confirmed or severe corruption continues, use Windows recovery or a clean installation. A clean installation should be reserved for serious corruption or suspected malware, and backups should be verified first.

rshx32.dll is a COM shell extension, and its exported functions include DllRegisterServer and DllUnregisterServer. That means registration can technically apply to this DLL.
It is still not the first repair:
regsvr32 rshx32.dll
Registration cannot restore a missing or corrupted protected Windows file. It can also produce misleading errors if you use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32.exe.
Only consider manual registration when:
- The correct Microsoft-signed file is already present.
- Windows itself is repaired.
- A documented, specific registration failure remains.
- The registration command is being used with the correct architecture.
For a 32-bit shell component on 64-bit Windows, architecture matters. Do not unregister and re-register system components experimentally. If registration fails, return to Windows servicing or the application’s supported repair procedure.

Why manual DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download rshx32.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.

That approach can fail because the replacement may have:
- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature.
- Malware or tampering.
- Different dependencies from the installed system.
- No matching COM registration.
It also hides the underlying cause, such as component-store corruption, quarantine, or a failed update. There is no supported standalone Microsoft download page for this file. The safe official sources are Windows servicing, Windows Update, Microsoft installation media, and the affected application’s publisher when the problem is application-specific.
Final verification checklist
Before considering the repair complete, confirm:
rshx32.dllis in the expected Windows directory.- The file description is Security Shell Extension.
- The file is signed by Microsoft Corporation.
- You did not mix the
System32andSysWOW64copies. - DISM completed successfully.
- SFC completed and reported its result.
- Windows was restarted.
- The affected application or Explorer security properties now open.
- Any Defender detection was investigated rather than blindly allowed.

There is no evidence that it is. Reinstalling Visual C++ is not a logical first repair for this Windows shell-extension DLL.
Which folder should contain it?
The native copy belongs in %windir%System32. On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit copy belongs in %windir%SysWOW64.
Does “module not found” prove that the file is missing?
No. Windows may be unable to load a dependency even when rshx32.dll is present.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
That is unsafe unless the computer has the identical Windows build, architecture, and a verified Microsoft-signed file. Windows servicing is the safer restoration method.
Should I reinstall a game or program?
Only when the failure is limited to that application. Use its repair or verification feature first, then reinstall it from the publisher if necessary.
Will Device Manager fix this DLL?
