rtcrtp.dll Missing: Restore the Legacy Microsoft Component

rtcrtp.dll is a legacy Microsoft Windows communication component, so the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the program that is requesting it. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website, because the wrong build, architecture, or an altered file may leave the original problem unresolved or create a security risk.

What this file actually does

rtcrtp.dll is associated with Microsoft TAPI and Real-Time Communications technology. Its historical description is Microsoft TAPI Audio, Video and RTP Filters.

TAPI, or Telephony Application Programming Interface, provides a connection between communications applications, the Windows TAPI server, and media service providers. RTP, or Real-time Transport Protocol, is used in communications software to handle media such as audio and video. In practical terms, this DLL belongs to the media-processing side of older Microsoft communications software.

The file has been associated with Windows XP-era RTC and TAPI components, Microsoft Messenger applications, and other legacy Microsoft communications products. It may also be required by an older application that included or depended on Microsoft RTC components.

Although rtcrtp.dll is identified as part of the Microsoft Windows operating system, that does not mean every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain it. Historical Windows component inventories include it, but there is no verified current Microsoft standalone download for this DLL.

Microsoft’s historical RTC documentation describes packages such as RtcApiSetup.exe, Rtcclnt.msm, and RtcSxsPolicies.msi. Those references are useful for identifying the technology, but they are not a recommendation to install old developer components on a modern Windows computer.

The most important clue is the program that displays the error. If only one old application reports the problem, repair that application first. If several Windows components fail, or if the error appeared after a failed update or system migration, check Windows system files.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

What you see Most likely explanation First action
An old communications program reports that rtcrtp.dll is missing The application was incompletely installed, removed, or damaged Repair or reinstall that application
The error appeared after uninstalling Messenger or another old communications program A startup entry or leftover application still references the DLL Remove the obsolete startup item or reinstall and properly remove the parent program
“The specified module could not be found” rtcrtp.dll may exist, but one of its dependencies is missing Reinstall the parent application and inspect its logs
“The procedure entry point could not be located” The DLL and the application expect different versions Restore the application’s original files and avoid mixing DLL versions
The error began after antivirus detection or quarantine Security software may have removed the file Check Protection history, then reinstall the application if necessary
Multiple programs or Windows tools are affected Windows component corruption is possible Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC
The program is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows The application may need 32-bit files and dependencies Repair the 32-bit application rather than copying files between system folders
The program has not been supported for years It may not work correctly on current Windows Use a supported replacement or an isolated, licensed legacy environment

1. Identify which program is calling rtcrtp.dll

Before changing Windows files, find the application that produces the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the title bar and the text around the error. The program name may appear in the window title, in a crash dialog, or immediately before the DLL message. Also note when the message appears:

  • When launching a particular application
  • During Windows sign-in
  • When opening an old installer
  • When joining a call or using a media feature
  • After an antivirus scan
  • After an update, cleanup, or migration

If the error appears only when starting one application, that application owns the repair process. The DLL may be stored in the application’s folder, supplied by an installer package, or loaded through an older Windows component. It does not automatically belong in C:WindowsSystem32.

To check whether a copy exists:

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC in the left pane.
  3. In the search box, type rtcrtp.dll.
  4. Allow the search to finish.
  5. Right-click a result and select Open file location.
  6. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
  7. Check the Details tab for the publisher, description, and file version.

A Microsoft signature and a sensible location are useful evidence, but the filename alone does not prove that the file is authentic. Do not overwrite an existing copy simply because another source reports a different version.

If the file is in an old application directory, repair that application. If it is in a Windows directory but is not digitally signed or has an unexpected publisher, scan the computer before restoring it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Repair or reinstall the affected application

This is the most likely fix when one older program displays the error.

Use Windows’ installed-app repair option

On Windows 11:

  1. Select Start, then Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the application that reports the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If Repair does not solve the problem, return to the same page and select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or locally stored data.

On Windows 10:

  1. Select Start, then Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the application.

Some older desktop programs do not provide these buttons. Use their own installer instead:

  1. Close the program.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if offered.
  6. Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
  7. Launch the application again.

If there is no repair choice, uninstall the application and install it again from its original, trusted installer or the product’s official Microsoft distribution source. Save any required settings or data first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy rtcrtp.dll from another computer. Even if the filename matches, the replacement may be from a different Windows generation, application build, or processor architecture. A proper reinstall restores the DLL together with its related files, registry settings, manifests, and dependencies.

If the program has a launcher with Verify files, Repair files, or a similar command, run that command before manually replacing anything. A verification process can restore the complete application installation rather than just one file.

After reinstalling, check whether the program is compatible with your version of Windows. An application built for Windows XP-era RTC components may require compatibility settings, older dependencies, or a supported replacement.

3. Install pending Windows updates and restart

If the error affects more than one application, or you suspect a Windows component was damaged, install available updates before running repair commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows 11:

  1. Select Start, then Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when requested.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.

On Windows 10:

  1. Select Start, then Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates.
  6. Restart the computer.

Try the affected application after restarting. If the update process fails, record the error shown in Windows Update and continue with the repair steps below.

Do not assume that an update will install a current standalone copy of rtcrtp.dll. Updates repair supported Windows components; they are not a general source for old application files.

4. Repair the Windows image with DISM, then run SFC

Use this path when the error may involve Windows itself, especially after a failed update, disk problem, migration, or system cleanup.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM

  1. Select Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete.
  3. Keep the window open even if progress appears to pause.

When DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, run SFC in the same administrator Command Prompt:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Restart Windows and test the program again.

Understand the SFC result

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file corruption. Repair the application that reports the error.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test the application.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, inspect the CBS log, and consider an in-place Windows repair or application reinstall.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Restart Windows and try the command again from an administrator Command Prompt.

SFC restores a file only when the installed Windows image recognizes that file as a protected Windows component. It is not guaranteed to restore an old application-local copy of rtcrtp.dll.

If DISM cannot find repair files, it may need a matching Windows installation source. Do not point it at an arbitrary ISO or a different Windows edition. A mismatched source can fail to repair the image.

Repeatedly running SFC without recording what changed is not useful. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for common Windows issues and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the specific application remains the definitive fix when that application owns rtcrtp.dll.

5. Check antivirus quarantine safely

Security software can remove or quarantine a DLL after detecting suspicious behavior in the file or in the program that loaded it.

For Microsoft Defender:

  1. Select Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Expand entries related to the time the error began.
  7. Read the detected file path, threat name, and action.

Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:

  • The file came from a trusted, intact installation.
  • The path belongs to the expected application or Microsoft component.
  • The detection is reasonably identified as a false positive.
  • The parent application is still supported or otherwise trusted.
  • You have scanned the computer and understand the detection.

If the file came from an unofficial DLL archive, a modified installer, or an unknown program, do not restore it. Uninstall or reinstall the parent application from a trusted source, then run a full Microsoft Defender scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quarantine restore does not repair a missing dependency or an incompatible version. If the program still fails, reinstall the complete application.

6. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows generally needs 32-bit libraries and compatible dependencies. A 64-bit application needs 64-bit libraries. The two types should not be mixed.

Windows uses different system-folder conventions:

  • C:WindowsSystem32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.

These names are confusing, so do not use them as instructions to copy rtcrtp.dll into both folders.

Instead, determine the application’s architecture from its documentation, installer, or vendor support information. Then repair or reinstall that exact application. A 32-bit program may keep its DLL beside its executable, while another program may use a side-by-side assembly or an installed Windows component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An architecture mismatch often produces messages such as:

  • “The procedure entry point could not be located”
  • “The application was unable to start correctly”
  • “The specified module could not be found”
  • “Bad image”

A file can exist and still fail to load if its architecture or dependency set is wrong. Do not replace it with a file from another machine merely because the name is identical.

7. Check for missing dependencies

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that rtcrtp.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to load another file that it requires.

To investigate:

  1. Reinstall or repair the parent application first.
  2. Check the application’s own log folder.
  3. Look in Event Viewer for an application error recorded at the same time.
  4. Note any additional DLL name or error code.
  5. Search the application’s official documentation for that exact dependency.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because an error names rtcrtp.dll. No authoritative information identifies this DLL as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributable, or .NET file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install another runtime only when the affected application’s official requirements specifically name it. Installing unrelated packages can add clutter without repairing the RTC component.

8. Update drivers only when the evidence points there

A graphics, sound, network, or telephony driver is not the usual cause of a missing rtcrtp.dll file. Driver work becomes relevant when the error appears only while using a device, after a driver update, or alongside device errors in Device Manager.

To inspect devices:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Audio inputs and outputs, Sound, video and game controllers, Network adapters, and any category related to the affected device.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
  6. Read the Device status message on the General tab.
  7. Open the Driver tab to see available rollback, update, or uninstall options.

Use Update driver, then select Search automatically for drivers. If the problem began immediately after an update, open the device’s Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if that button is available.

Restart Windows and test the application. If the device has no warning icon and the problem occurs before the device is used, return to application repair rather than repeatedly changing drivers.

Manually hunting through hardware pages and comparing driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that requires rtcrtp.dll.

9. Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration interface such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal DLL repair command.

Do not run:

regsvr32 rtcrtp.dll

unless the specific application’s official documentation says that this DLL is a COM server and must be registered. Media-processing DLLs are not automatically COM servers, and a registration error does not restore missing files or dependencies.

Messages such as “The module was loaded but the entry point was not found” usually indicate that registration is not appropriate for that file. Remove the command from any generic repair guide that suggested it without identifying the DLL’s registration requirements.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Review Windows Features only for a documented requirement

Some older applications require an optional Windows component, but enabling random features will not normally restore rtcrtp.dll.

To review installed features:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the Windows Features list.
  3. Enable a feature only when the application’s official requirements specifically name it.
  4. Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.

Do not enable legacy components merely because the file is associated with old Windows software. RTC packages and Windows optional features are not interchangeable, and an unsupported application may still fail after a feature is enabled.

11. Handle obsolete applications carefully

If the application depends on Windows XP-era Messenger, RTC, or TAPI files, it may no longer be compatible with modern Windows. In that case:

  1. Check whether the publisher provides a current replacement.
  2. Back up application data before uninstalling.
  3. Remove the obsolete program through Settings or Control Panel.
  4. Remove leftover startup entries that still launch it.
  5. Install a supported replacement if available.
  6. If the old program is essential, use a properly licensed, isolated legacy environment with no unnecessary network exposure.

If the error appears at every login but no program window opens, inspect startup entries:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Startup apps in Task Manager.
  3. Look for an entry associated with the old communications program.
  4. Right-click it and select Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Disabling a leftover startup entry stops the error from appearing, but it does not repair the old application. Remove the parent program properly if you no longer need it.

System Restore may help when the failure began immediately after a recent change and a suitable restore point exists:

  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Review the affected programs before confirming.

System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling a damaged application, and it may not restore files that were never part of the current Windows installation.

Frequently asked questions

Is rtcrtp.dll a Windows system file?

It is historically identified as part of Microsoft Windows and older Microsoft RTC/TAPI components. However, its presence is not expected on every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation, so an error naming it should be investigated through the calling application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download rtcrtp.dll separately?

No. There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download for this DLL. Restore it through the original application installer, an official Microsoft component package where applicable, or Windows repair tools when Windows recognizes it as a protected component.

Will copying the file to System32 fix the error?

Usually not. The application may need a 32-bit copy, related dependencies, manifests, registry information, or a matching build. Copying an unauthenticated file into a system directory can also damage a working installation.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not merely because rtcrtp.dll is named in the error. Install those packages only when the affected application’s official requirements specifically call for them.

Why does the error say the module is missing when the file is present?

A dependency may be missing, the DLL may be the wrong architecture, or the application may require a different build. Repair the parent application instead of replacing the visible file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SFC restore rtcrtp.dll?

Only if the installed Windows image contains and recognizes that protected component. SFC does not restore every application-local DLL.

When should I restore an antivirus quarantine item?

Only when the file came from a trusted installation, the path is expected, and the detection is understood to be a false positive. Otherwise reinstall the parent application and scan the computer.

What is the correct final step if none of this works?

Identify the exact program, its architecture, and the complete error text. Reinstall that program from its official source, check its compatibility requirements, and avoid mixing DLLs from different Windows or application versions.
