The server URL tells the encoder where to connect; the stream key identifies or authorizes the broadcast. Get both values from the platform you plan to stream to—formats and supported protocols vary by service.
What RTMP does in a live-stream setup
RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. In a typical live setup, a camera, game capture, or other source feeds an encoder. The encoder sends the encoded audio and video over the internet to the platform’s ingest system, which receives the broadcast and prepares it for viewers. Twitch describes this as sending a captured video signal through the internet to Twitch using RTMP (Twitch Developers: Video Broadcast).
The basic path is:
camera / screen / audio → encoder → RTMP or RTMPS connection → platform ingest server → platform processing and viewers
An ingest server is the receiving endpoint for the broadcaster’s upload. It is not the same thing as the encoder: the encoder creates and sends the stream, while the ingest system receives it.

What are the RTMP URL and stream key?
Server URL or broadcast URL
The RTMP URL—also called a server URL, ingest URL, or broadcast URL—points the encoder to the platform’s receiving endpoint. Depending on the platform and encoder, it may include an application path after the server address.
Stream key
A stream key is a platform-issued value associated with a broadcast or channel. It identifies or authorizes the stream at the ingest service. Treat it like a password: someone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to the associated channel. Twitch warns broadcasters not to share their keys (Twitch Stream Key FAQ).

The URL and key work together, but they are not interchangeable. Enter each in the field your encoder expects, and use the values supplied by the destination platform rather than borrowing an example from another service.
Where to find them and enter them
- Open the destination platform’s live-stream controls. Create or select the live stream and retrieve its current ingest URL and key or stream name. Twitch says its assigned key can be retrieved from the broadcaster dashboard or its API. YouTube’s setup uses Live Control Room, and its API exposes ingestion information (Twitch Developers: Video Broadcast; YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams; YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder).
- Open the encoder’s streaming or broadcast settings. Select the destination platform preset if one is available. Otherwise, enter the exact URL and key in the corresponding fields.
- Check whether the encoder wants separate values or one combined address. YouTube notes that some encoders accept an ingestion URL and stream name separately, while others require them concatenated as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the encoder’s field labels and YouTube’s current Live Control Room values; do not assume every platform uses this format (YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams). - Start the encoder’s broadcast and check the platform’s live status. Confirm that the platform is receiving data and inspect its health or error indicators. YouTube’s API exposes stream states including active, inactive, and error, along with health information and configuration issues (YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams).
For example, Twitch documents a URL structure of rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>[?bandwidthtest=true]. That is a Twitch-specific format, not a universal template. Twitch describes the server as the receiver and the key as uniquely identifying the stream (Twitch Developers: Video Broadcast).

RTMP vs. RTMPS, HLS, and DASH
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection in transit. YouTube Help advises obtaining the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room—the ordinary RTMP URL may be shown by default—and copying the stream key into the encoder. The encoder must support RTMPS (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).
YouTube’s ingestion comparison, last updated 2026-06-01 UTC, lists RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH for third-party clients. These options differ in encryption, codecs, latency, and suitability for particular video needs:

| Protocol | Encryption | Codec support listed by YouTube | Latency and use considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Not encrypted | H.264 | Supports normal, low, or ultra-low latency, according to YouTube’s comparison. |
| RTMPS | Encrypted | H.264 | Supports normal, low, or ultra-low latency, according to YouTube’s comparison. |
| HLS | Encrypted | H.264 and H.265/HEVC, including HDR | Not suitable for ultra-low latency; its segment-based delivery typically incurs more latency than RTMP. |
| DASH | Encrypted | H.264 and VP9 | Not suitable for ultra-low latency; its segment-based delivery typically incurs more latency than RTMP. |
This table reflects YouTube’s documented ingestion options, not a guarantee that every platform or encoder supports each protocol. Choose based on the destination’s supported codecs, encryption, latency target, resolution or HDR needs, and your encoder’s capabilities (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

The platform does not receive a stream
- Re-copy the current URL and key from the destination platform; a mistyped, outdated, or mismatched value can prevent the encoder from reaching the intended broadcast.
- Check whether the encoder expects separate URL and key fields or a combined value. YouTube supports both patterns depending on the encoder (YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams).
- Check the platform’s stream state and health information. YouTube’s API distinguishes active, inactive, and error states and reports health details (YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams).
An RTMPS connection reports an SSL error
- Verify that the URL supplied for the connection begins with
rtmps, notrtmp, and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. - If the URL otherwise looks correct, YouTube suggests trying port 443 for certain SSL errors. Use the platform-provided RTMPS address rather than adding a port or changing the URL by guesswork (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).
You want to test Twitch bandwidth without going live to viewers
Twitch documents the optional query parameter bandwidthtest=true for disabling live viewing while checking bandwidth health in Twitch Inspector. It is Twitch-specific and should not be added to URLs for other platforms (Twitch Developers: Video Broadcast).

Protect your stream key
- Do not post a real key in screenshots, public support requests, or chat.
- Use a placeholder rather than a real key in tutorials or examples.
- Retrieve or refresh a key through the platform’s official controls. If you think it has been exposed, use those controls to replace it.
Twitch explicitly cautions that sharing a key can compromise the channel. The same password-like handling is prudent for any platform-issued broadcast credential (Twitch Stream Key FAQ).
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that should loop uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
