RTMP, HLS and WebRTC are not three interchangeable ways to do the same job. RTMP is commonly used to send a live feed from an encoder to a platform; HLS is built to deliver streams to viewers over HTTP; and WebRTC is designed for real-time, interactive communication. The right choice depends first on whether you are sending a stream in or delivering it out.

At a glance: ingest, delivery or interaction?

Protocol Common role Best fit Key trade-off
RTMP Contribution or ingest: an encoder sends a feed to a streaming platform. Getting an encoded live feed into a service that can process or repackage it. It is not generally a browser playback format; a platform may repackage the incoming stream for viewer delivery. (Wowza protocol documentation)
HLS Viewer delivery over HTTP. Broad reach, CDN distribution and playback that can adapt to changing network conditions. Standard HLS can have more delay than real-time communication workflows; Low-Latency HLS is a distinct variant.
WebRTC Real-time communication between endpoints, often involving browsers. Live interaction where conversation or immediate response matters. Latency and scale depend on implementation, network and service architecture; it is not automatically the best choice for large-scale one-to-many delivery.

A common workflow combines protocols rather than selecting only one: an encoder can send a contribution feed using RTMP, while the platform converts or packages it for HLS playback by viewers. WebRTC can instead serve an interactive real-time path where that is the priority. (Wowza protocol documentation; IETF RFC 9317)

How RTMP works in a streaming workflow

RTMP is commonly used between an encoder and a streaming platform. In that role, the encoder contributes the live feed; the service receiving it can then process or repackage it for delivery to viewers. That makes RTMP useful for ingest without making it the format viewers should expect to play directly in a modern browser.

Wowza says browsers no longer play RTMP natively. If a viewer-facing workflow needs browser playback, the incoming stream typically needs another delivery path, such as HLS. The exact protocols a service accepts or outputs are service-specific, so check its current documentation rather than assuming that support for RTMP ingest means RTMP playback for viewers.

How HLS delivers video to viewers

Apple describes HLS as a way to deliver live and on-demand audio and video through ordinary web servers and content delivery networks. Its design aims include reliability and adaptation to changing network conditions. Wowza describes HLS as segmented, adaptive-bitrate delivery over HTTP. These characteristics make HLS well suited to distributing a stream to viewers across a range of network conditions and devices. (Apple HLS documentation; Wowza protocol documentation)

Standard HLS and Low-Latency HLS

Do not treat standard HLS and Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) as the same delay profile. LL-HLS is a variant intended to reduce latency while retaining HTTP-based delivery characteristics. Whether a specific player, platform and distribution setup supports LL-HLS is an implementation question; the protocol name alone does not tell you the delay viewers will experience.

How WebRTC supports real-time interaction

WebRTC provides browser-oriented real-time communication APIs. Its media transport uses RTP, which RFC 8834 specifies as required for WebRTC media. This makes WebRTC a natural fit for workflows such as live conversation or other experiences where participants need to respond to one another with minimal delay. (W3C WebRTC specification; IETF RFC 8834)

WebRTC is not a promise of identical performance on every network. End-to-end delay and reliability depend on the implementation, connection quality and service architecture. Consider how the service handles participants and distribution as well as whether its browser APIs suit your application. (IETF RFC 9317)

Latency: useful comparisons, not protocol guarantees

Latency figures vary by workflow and implementation. The following are vendor comparisons, not standardized benchmarks or guarantees for every product using the named protocol.

Source and context Reported figures How to interpret them
Wowza, “WebRTC workflows in Wowza Video” (2024) 15–20 seconds typical for HLS; 500 milliseconds or less for WebRTC. These figures describe the workflows on that Wowza page, not every HLS or WebRTC deployment. (Wowza workflow page)
Wowza’s current WebRTC overview, accessed in 2026 Under 500 ms for WebRTC; 2–5 seconds for LL-HLS and RTMP; 10–30 seconds for HLS or MPEG-DASH. This is a separate vendor comparison with different ranges and context. Treat the figures as Wowza’s estimates, not protocol-wide service levels. (Wowza WebRTC overview)

The distinct Wowza comparisons illustrate why a single latency number should not be attached to a protocol without context. Ask a provider what its figure measures, which workflow and configuration it represents, and whether it is a typical result or a commitment.

Choose by workflow and viewer experience

  • For encoder-to-platform contribution: consider RTMP when the receiving platform supports it. Confirm which protocol the service uses for the onward viewer stream.
  • For broad one-to-many viewing: consider HLS when HTTP/CDN delivery, adaptive playback and wide distribution fit the use case. Check whether standard HLS or LL-HLS is available in the actual player and platform combination.
  • For interaction: consider WebRTC when participants need a real-time, browser-oriented experience. Validate performance on the networks and devices your users actually use.
  • For a mixed workflow: use the protocol appropriate to each stage. Ingest and viewer playback can use different protocols, and a platform may handle the conversion.

Before deciding, compare the practical requirements rather than protocol names alone:

  • How quickly must viewers see an event, and do they need to respond live?
  • Is the experience one-to-many viewing or two-way participation?
  • What audience scale and delivery path must the service support?
  • Which browsers, devices and players need to work?
  • Do you need adaptive-bitrate behavior or particular playback features?
  • Is the protocol being used for contribution/ingest, viewer delivery, or both?

Apple’s HLS documentation emphasizes ordinary web servers and CDNs and adaptation to network conditions; the W3C and IETF specifications define WebRTC’s browser communication APIs and RTP media transport; and protocol support depends on the platform or service. These are different architectural roles, not a simple ranking of “best” protocols. (Apple HLS documentation; W3C WebRTC specification; IETF RFC 8834; Wowza protocol documentation)
