RTMP vs. RTMPS: What’s the Difference?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS, which encrypts the connection between your encoder and the streaming service’s ingest endpoint. Plain RTMP does not add that TLS protection. Which one you can use depends on the destination’s settings, accepted URL, port and TLS requirements.

RTMP and RTMPS compared

Connection What it means Transport encryption
RTMP Real-Time Messaging Protocol sent without the additional TLS layer. No TLS protection on the connection to ingest.
RTMPS RTMP carried over a TLS connection. TLS encrypts the connection between the encoder and ingest endpoint.

That difference concerns transport security, not the video itself: RTMPS does not inherently improve picture quality or guarantee lower latency. The receiving service determines which connection types it accepts. For example, Amazon IVS can reject plain RTMP when insecure ingest is disabled; its real-time ingest configuration defaults insecureIngest to false. See Amazon IVS Streaming Configuration.

What RTMPS encrypts—and what it does not

RTMPS protects data in transit from the encoder to the ingest endpoint using TLS. That does not, by itself, establish end-to-end encryption through every stage of a streaming service’s processing or delivery. AWS says IVS encrypts data in transit for RTMPS ingest, while also noting that a stream may travel unencrypted within IVS for processing. See IVS Data Protection and IVS Infrastructure Security.

Which should you use?

Use RTMPS when the destination supports or requires it. AWS recommends RTMPS for IVS unless a specific, verified use case requires RTMP. Plain RTMP may be an option where a receiver allows insecure ingest, but it lacks the TLS layer. Before connecting, check these details in the streaming service’s current instructions:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • The exact ingest URL and whether it begins with rtmp:// or rtmps://.
  • The port and any firewall or network access requirements.
  • The minimum TLS version, if using RTMPS.
  • Whether your encoder supports the required protocol and TLS version.

Ports and an Amazon IVS example

Ports are set by the service; there is no single port number to assume for every RTMP or RTMPS destination. For Amazon IVS low-latency streaming, AWS documents RTMPS over TCP port 443 and insecure RTMP over TCP port 1935. These are IVS-specific requirements, not universal protocol defaults. Consult AWS IVS network requirements for the service’s current details.

AWS gives an IVS RTMPS server URL in this form: rtmps://<IVS-ingest-server>/<IVS-stream-key>. Its insecure RTMP example uses rtmp:// and omits :443. Do not copy these values for another platform; use that destination’s own ingest URL and network instructions.

How to set up RTMPS in OBS

The exact labels and workflow depend on the destination and OBS version. For an IVS stream, AWS describes OBS and other compatible software or hardware encoders as options; it does not establish that every encoder is compatible. Follow the IVS setup guidance at Step 4: Set Up Streaming Software.

  1. Get the IVS ingest details. In the IVS console or the applicable service workflow, obtain the ingest server URL and stream key for your channel. Treat the key as a secret; do not share or publish it.
  2. Open the stream settings in OBS. Go to Settings → Stream. Select the service option specified by the current AWS/OBS instructions. If a custom server is needed, enter the RTMPS ingest URL supplied for your channel, not a URL copied from another service.
  3. Enter the stream key. Paste the matching IVS stream key into the key field. Check that it belongs to the same channel as the ingest URL.
  4. Confirm network and TLS compatibility. IVS RTMPS requires TLS 1.2 or later and uses TCP 443 in AWS’s low-latency network requirements. Make sure OBS can negotiate that TLS version and that outbound access to the required endpoint and port is allowed.
  5. Start streaming and verify the destination. Start the stream in OBS, then check the IVS channel’s status or playback view to confirm that the ingest is arriving. If it does not connect, use the troubleshooting checks below before changing to plain RTMP.

Troubleshooting an RTMPS connection

  • Connection refused or no ingest appears: Check that you used the exact RTMPS URL and stream key for the channel, and that the destination accepts RTMPS.
  • TLS or handshake error: Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS and the receiver’s TLS floor. For IVS, AWS specifies TLS 1.2 or later.
  • Connection times out: Check outbound firewall rules and whether the service-specific port is reachable. IVS low-latency RTMPS uses TCP 443; do not assume that port applies to other destinations.
  • RTMP works but RTMPS does not: The encoder may lack compatible TLS support, or the RTMPS endpoint or port may be wrong. Verify compatibility and endpoint details with the receiver rather than assuming RTMP and RTMPS use interchangeable URLs.
  • The stream connects, but you need end-to-end confidentiality: RTMPS alone only establishes encryption to ingest. Check the service’s documentation for the protection applied during internal processing and downstream delivery.
