RTX 3050 6GB vs RTX 2060 specifications

Specification RTX 3050 6GB RTX 2060 6GB What it means
Architecture Ampere Turing The 3050 is newer, but architecture age alone does not determine game performance.
CUDA cores 2,304 1,920 Counts cannot be compared directly across architectures.
VRAM 6GB GDDR6 6GB GDDR6 Neither card has a capacity advantage.
Memory interface 96-bit 192-bit The 2060 has substantially more memory-bandwidth headroom.
Ray-tracing hardware Second generation First generation The 3050 has newer RT hardware, but total GPU performance still matters.
Tensor hardware Third generation Second generation The 3050 has newer AI hardware.
Reference board power 70W About 160W for typical reference-class cards The 3050 is much easier to use in power-constrained systems.
Supplemental power None on Nvidia’s reference 6GB design Usually one 8-pin connector Check the exact add-in-board model.
PCIe interface PCIe 4.0 x8 PCIe 3.0 x16 The 3050’s x8 interface makes platform compatibility worth checking.
DLSS Supported Supported Both can use DLSS Super Resolution in supported games.
Frame generation Not an RTX 40-series DLSS Frame Generation card Not an RTX 40-series DLSS Frame Generation card DLSS support does not mean every DLSS feature is available.

Nvidia’s reference RTX 3050 6GB specification lists 2,304 CUDA cores, a 96-bit memory bus, 70W graphics-card power, PCIe 4.0 support, second-generation RT cores, and third-generation Tensor cores. Board-partner specifications can differ, so verify the exact model before buying.

Gaming performance: the RTX 2060 wins

In most conventional 1080p rasterized gaming tests, the RTX 2060 produces higher average FPS than the RTX 3050 6GB. The RTX 3050 6GB is not a performance upgrade from the RTX 2060.

The 2060 benefits from a stronger overall configuration and a much wider memory interface. The RTX 3050 6GB’s newer architecture, higher CUDA-core count, and newer RT and Tensor generations do not compensate for its reduced design.

The exact performance difference varies by game, graphics preset, driver, CPU, and whether a title is limited by VRAM or memory bandwidth. A GPU-light esports game may show a relatively small difference, particularly when the processor is the limiting factor. Modern, demanding games can expose the 2060’s additional throughput and bandwidth more clearly.

Independent testing also shows why the model name matters. TechSpot found the RTX 3050 6GB roughly 20–30% slower than the RTX 3050 8GB in its test suite, with results across demanding games including Cyberpunk 2077, Starfield, The Last of Us Part I, Alan Wake 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. That percentage is specific to that test suite and should not be treated as a universal RTX 2060 comparison. See the complete TechSpot RTX 3050 6GB review.

A broad PassMark comparison also ranks the RTX 2060 above the RTX 3050 6GB, but its results combine different systems, drivers, and test conditions. It is a cross-check, not a substitute for controlled game benchmarks.

What to expect at 1080p

  • Esports and older games: Both cards can be suitable, and the difference may be less important than your CPU and monitor refresh rate.
  • Modern AAA games: The RTX 2060 generally delivers more performance, but both cards may require medium or low settings.
  • Very demanding games: Expect compromises involving textures, effects, ray tracing, and upscaling on either card.
  • 1% lows: Average FPS does not tell the whole story. VRAM pressure, asset streaming, and CPU limits can affect frame-time consistency.

Ray tracing and DLSS

The RTX 3050 6GB has second-generation RT cores and third-generation Tensor cores, compared with the RTX 2060’s first-generation RT cores and second-generation Tensor cores. That gives the 3050 a generational hardware advantage in ray-tracing and AI features.

It does not automatically make the RTX 3050 6GB faster with ray tracing enabled. Ray-traced games are still constrained by the GPU’s total rendering performance, memory subsystem, and 6GB VRAM limit. The RTX 2060 can remain the faster card in a particular game even though its RT hardware is older.

Both cards support DLSS Super Resolution where a game includes it. DLSS lowers the internal rendering resolution and reconstructs the image, which can improve frame rates. It does not erase the difference in raw GPU performance, and starting from a low internal resolution can reduce image quality.

For demanding games, use ray tracing selectively. A practical starting point is lower graphics settings, ray tracing disabled or minimized, and DLSS Quality or Balanced when available. Neither card should be marketed as having the RTX 40-series generation’s DLSS Frame Generation feature.

VRAM and memory bandwidth

Both cards have 6GB of GDDR6, so there is no capacity winner. The RTX 2060 does, however, have a 192-bit memory interface, compared with the RTX 3050 6GB’s 96-bit interface. That gives the 2060 more memory-bandwidth headroom for feeding its GPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VRAM capacity and memory bandwidth are different limitations. Six gigabytes may be adequate for many 1080p games at sensible settings, but newer titles can require lower texture quality, reduced effects, or upscaling. High-resolution texture packs, heavy ray tracing, 1440p gaming, and future AAA releases will put pressure on either card.

Do not assume that the RTX 3050’s 6GB is somehow better than the RTX 2060’s 6GB. The capacity is equal; the 2060 has the wider bus.

Power, connectors, and PC compatibility

The RTX 3050 6GB’s biggest advantage is power consumption. Nvidia rates its reference design at 70W and does not require an auxiliary PCIe power connector. Nvidia also lists a 300W recommended system power figure under its stated test configuration.

That makes the reference-style card useful for some office desktops, OEM systems, and small-form-factor builds where the power supply lacks an 8-pin cable. It can also reduce heat and make cooling easier. Some partner models may use different clocks, coolers, dimensions, or power connectors, so “RTX 3050 6GB” alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RTX 2060 normally requires an 8-pin PCIe connector and has materially higher board power. It needs a healthy, adequately sized power supply with the correct cable. An old or proprietary OEM power supply may not be suitable even if its printed wattage appears sufficient.

Compatibility checklist

  1. Check the power supply’s wattage, age, quality, and available PCIe cable.
  2. Confirm whether the exact RTX 3050 model is genuinely slot-powered or includes an auxiliary connector.
  3. Measure case length, card height, slot thickness, and radiator or drive clearance.
  4. Verify that the case supports a full-height, dual-slot graphics card if applicable.
  5. Check airflow, especially in compact systems.
  6. Look for proprietary PSU connectors or restrictions in OEM desktops.
  7. Confirm the motherboard and operating system support the card.

New RTX 3050 6GB or used RTX 2060?

This is not only a performance comparison. It is also a comparison between a newer retail product and an older used-market card.

Why the new RTX 3050 6GB can make sense

  • It is more likely to include manufacturer warranty coverage.
  • Its low power draw simplifies installation.
  • It is better suited to some OEM and compact computers.
  • Condition, fan wear, and thermal-paste degradation are less concerning when buying new.
  • It is a sensible choice when it is meaningfully cheaper than a tested RTX 2060.

Why the used RTX 2060 can make sense

  • It usually offers higher gaming performance at a similar price.
  • Its wider memory interface benefits many games and workloads.
  • It can be a strong budget option when purchased from a reliable seller with return protection.

For a used RTX 2060, request a GPU-Z screenshot, a benchmark or gameplay recording, temperature and hotspot readings, confirmation that all display outputs work, and evidence of no artifacting, crashes, or fan failure. Prefer a listing with a clear return window. Used cards may have been exposed to sustained heat or heavy workloads, and cooler condition varies by board design.

Which one should you buy?

Your situation Recommendation
Normal gaming PC, similar prices RTX 2060, provided it is tested and the PSU is suitable.
No PCIe power connector RTX 3050 6GB, if the exact model is slot-powered.
Weak or uncertain PSU RTX 3050 6GB, after confirming the complete system’s compatibility.
New card and warranty are priorities RTX 3050 6GB.
Lowest-cost used gaming performance RTX 2060, if tested, returnable, and reasonably priced.
Compact OEM or SFF desktop RTX 3050 6GB, if its dimensions and power design fit.
High-settings modern AAA gaming Neither; look for a newer card with at least 8GB of VRAM if the system supports it.

Alternatives worth checking

Before buying either 6GB card, compare the current price of a GeForce RTX 3060 12GB. It offers more VRAM and is better suited to modern games, although it needs more power and may not fit a constrained system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Radeon RX 6600 8GB is another important comparison for conventional 1080p gaming. It can be more attractive when rasterized performance and VRAM matter most, but it is less suitable for buyers who specifically need Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem, Nvidia Broadcast, Nvidia Studio workflows, or DLSS.

Newer 8GB-or-more GPUs may offer better long-term value if the price gap is small. Check the card’s power requirements, case dimensions, feature support, and same-day pricing rather than assuming any alternative is automatically superior.

Common buying mistakes

“The RTX 3050 is newer, so it must be faster.”

Release date and gaming speed are separate matters. The RTX 3050 6GB is a cut-down entry-level design, while the RTX 2060 was a higher-tier product in its generation.

“Both cards have 6GB, so they perform the same.”

Equal VRAM capacity does not mean equal GPU throughput. The RTX 2060’s wider memory interface and stronger overall configuration matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“DLSS makes the RTX 3050 faster than the RTX 2060.”

Both cards support DLSS. The result depends on the game, DLSS mode, settings, base frame rate, and image-quality tolerance.

“Every RTX 3050 6GB needs no power cable.”

That is true for Nvidia’s reference specification, but add-in-board models can differ. Check the manufacturer’s product page for the exact card.

“Six gigabytes is future-proof.”

Six gigabytes is increasingly restrictive in demanding games. Treat both cards as entry-level 1080p options and expect to reduce textures or effects over time.

Final verdict

Buy the RTX 2060 for gaming performance. It is generally faster at 1080p and is the better choice when the price is close and the card has been properly tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the RTX 3050 6GB for system compatibility. Its 70W power rating, reference-style lack of an auxiliary connector, newer retail availability, and warranty potential make it the safer option for weak-PSU, OEM, and compact PCs.

Do not pay near the price of a newer 8GB-or-more GPU for either card, and do not buy a used RTX 2060 without evidence that it works.
