For most RTX 3060 Ti owners, the answer is no. The RTX 4060 Ti is newer, more power-efficient and adds DLSS Frame Generation and AV1 encoding, but its ordinary gaming performance is usually only modestly higher. Keep the RTX 3060 Ti unless your upgrade cost is unusually low, you specifically need Ada-generation features, or lower power consumption matters more than a large performance gain.

New buyers should also compare the RTX 4060 Ti with the newer RTX 5060 Ti before purchasing remaining 4060 Ti stock.

RTX 4060 Ti vs RTX 3060 Ti: specifications

The specification table also explains why the comparison is not straightforward. The 4060 Ti has fewer CUDA cores and a narrower memory bus, but its newer architecture, much larger L2 cache and improved RT and Tensor cores allow it to remain competitive. CUDA-core counts and memory bandwidth alone do not predict gaming performance.

How much faster is the RTX 4060 Ti?

1080p rasterized gaming

At 1080p without ray tracing, the RTX 4060 Ti is generally around 8–15% faster, although the exact result depends on the game, CPU, settings, drivers and benchmark suite. TechSpot measured an approximately 8% average advantage across a large 40-game comparison. Tom’s Hardware found leads ranging roughly from 6% to 17% in its 1080p raster tests.

That is a real improvement, but it is not a generational leap. A game running at 100fps on the 3060 Ti might reach roughly 108fps on the 4060 Ti, while a CPU-limited game may show little difference at all. Read the full results from TechSpot and Tom’s Hardware’s 1080p testing.

1440p gaming

The gap usually narrows at 1440p. The 4060 Ti can be modestly faster, but some games are effectively tied and bandwidth-limited workloads can favor the 3060 Ti. Tom’s Hardware found an overall lead in its 1440p test suite, while also recording individual results in which the 4060 Ti fell behind.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 1440p player, this is rarely enough performance to justify replacing a working 3060 Ti. The result may be useful if you are just below a 60fps or 100fps target, but it will not transform the card into a high-end 1440p solution. Compare the test methodology before treating any single average as universal; reviews use different games, presets, CPUs, drivers and ray-tracing mixes. See Tom’s Hardware’s 1440p results.

4K gaming

Neither card is an ideal choice for demanding 4K ultra gaming. At this resolution, the 4060 Ti’s narrower memory interface can become a disadvantage, and its lead may disappear or reverse in some workloads. Upscaling can make 4K output possible, but the underlying rendering performance remains limited.

If your goal is a substantial 1440p or 4K upgrade, skip from the 3060 Ti to a meaningfully higher performance tier rather than moving sideways to a 4060 Ti.

Ray tracing

The 4060 Ti has the architectural advantage in ray-traced workloads. Its third-generation RT cores and newer Ada design can improve performance in supported games, and DLSS can reduce the cost of rendering at a higher output resolution.

That advantage still does not make every demanding ray-traced game comfortable at 1440p. You may need DLSS, reduced settings or Frame Generation. NVIDIA’s “up to” comparisons use selected games and configured DLSS and Frame Generation settings, so claims such as “up to 2.6 times faster” should not be treated as expected native performance. Independent testing provides a more useful baseline: Tom’s Hardware’s review.

DLSS Frame Generation: useful feature or upgrade reason?

The RTX 3060 Ti supports DLSS Super Resolution but not the RTX 40-series Frame Generation feature. The RTX 4060 Ti can generate intermediate frames in compatible games, increasing the displayed frame rate.

It is important to separate four different things:

  • Native performance: Frames actually rendered by the GPU.
  • DLSS Super Resolution: An AI-assisted upscaling mode that renders internally at a lower resolution.
  • Frame Generation: AI-generated intermediate frames inserted between rendered frames.
  • Input responsiveness: How quickly the game responds to your controls.

Frame Generation can make a supported single-player game look smoother when the base frame rate is already reasonably high. It does not provide the same benefit as doubling native rendering performance, and it can add latency or produce artifacts. A high displayed FPS number can conceal a much lower underlying frame rate.

For competitive shooters and other latency-sensitive games, native performance and low input latency matter more than generated frames. For slower-paced ray-traced single-player games, Frame Generation may be a meaningful quality-of-life feature. It is a reason to choose a 4060 Ti in a particular use case, but usually not enough reason by itself to replace a 3060 Ti.

NVIDIA describes the feature in its RTX 4060 guide.

RTX 4060 Ti 8GB vs 16GB

The 16GB model solves a capacity problem, not a compute-performance problem. Both versions use the same basic GPU, 128-bit memory interface and similar shader performance.

Extra VRAM can help with:

  • Texture-heavy games.
  • Large mod packs.
  • Some ray-traced titles.
  • Creative applications that exceed 8GB.
  • Situations where 8GB causes stutter or forces lower texture settings.

It does not automatically make the 4060 Ti faster. If a game does not exceed 8GB, the 16GB card may perform almost identically to the 8GB model. If the GPU lacks the rendering power for demanding 1440p or 4K settings, additional memory cannot fix that limitation.

Do not treat an in-game “allocated VRAM” figure as proof that the card is running out of memory. Look for actual symptoms such as texture pop-in, severe stutter, large frame-time spikes or a clear improvement after lowering texture quality. Tom’s Hardware’s 16GB review covers where the additional capacity helps and where it does not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 3060 Ti owner, moving to the 4060 Ti 16GB is therefore not a universal longevity upgrade. If you need both substantially more VRAM and substantially more rendering performance, a higher-tier or newer card is usually a better target.

Power consumption and efficiency

The 4060 Ti is significantly more efficient. NVIDIA lists approximately 140W average gaming power and a 160–165W total graphics power range, depending on the model. NVIDIA also claimed a 57W reduction in average power use compared with the 3060 Ti in its own testing; that figure is a first-party result, not a guarantee for every game or partner card.

Lower power can mean:

  • Less heat inside the case.
  • Quieter cooling.
  • Better suitability for small-form-factor systems.
  • Less strain on a compact power supply.
  • Lower electricity use for a PC that runs many hours each day.

Efficiency is a genuine advantage, but electricity savings alone rarely justify replacing a working 3060 Ti. It matters most when you are building a small, quiet or thermally constrained PC, or when the 3060 Ti is being replaced for another reason.

NVIDIA lists a 550W required system power figure for its reference configuration, while exact requirements vary by partner model. Check the card’s dimensions, connector and PSU guidance before buying. Power and noise measurements are available from Tom’s Hardware.

Streaming, recording and video work

The 4060 Ti is clearly preferable if you need hardware AV1 encoding. It uses an eighth-generation NVENC encoder with AV1 support, while the 3060 Ti predates GeForce AV1 hardware encoding.

AV1 can be valuable for:

  • OBS streaming to services that accept AV1.
  • Local recordings at a given quality and bitrate.
  • Video exports using compatible NVENC workflows.
  • Creator applications with AV1 support.

Software and platform support still matters. Not every streaming service, editor or workflow automatically uses AV1, so check the applications you actually use. For a creator who streams or records frequently, AV1 may justify choosing the 4060 Ti even when the gaming uplift alone does not.

PCIe compatibility and older systems

The RTX 4060 Ti uses a PCIe 4.0 x8 interface. It remains compatible with PCIe 3.0 motherboards, but the reduced link width can create a small performance penalty in some situations, especially when the workload exceeds available VRAM and data must move across the PCIe bus.

PCIe 3.0 is not an automatic deal-breaker. Before upgrading, check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Your motherboard’s PCIe generation.
  • Your CPU platform and whether the game is CPU-limited.
  • Resizable BAR support and BIOS settings.
  • System RAM capacity.
  • Case airflow and power-supply quality.

At 1080p and high refresh rates, an older CPU can limit both cards. In that situation, a graphics-card replacement may produce little visible improvement.

Which card is better for 1080p?

The RTX 4060 Ti is the better card on paper for 1080p: it is faster, more efficient and supports Frame Generation and AV1 encoding. But the practical difference may be small if the 3060 Ti already holds your monitor’s refresh rate.

The 4060 Ti is more defensible when:

  • You use a high-refresh-rate display and are close to your target frame rate.
  • You play ray-traced games.
  • You stream or record with AV1.
  • You need a cooler or quieter PC.
  • The net upgrade cost is very small.

For ordinary 60–100fps 1080p gaming, keep the 3060 Ti unless the replacement is nearly cost-neutral.

Which card is better for 1440p?

The 3060 Ti remains surprisingly competitive at 1440p. The 4060 Ti can provide a modest lead in some games, but its 8GB capacity and narrow memory interface make it an unconvincing upgrade at normal pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on your actual target:

  • 60Hz: If the 3060 Ti already maintains your target, upgrading will rarely be visible.
  • 144Hz: The 4060 Ti may help in selected games, but not enough to guarantee 144fps across demanding releases.
  • Ray tracing: Ada’s RT improvements and Frame Generation can help, though DLSS and reduced settings may still be necessary.
  • Texture-heavy games: The 16GB model can avoid capacity-related problems, but it does not provide higher-tier GPU performance.

For most 1440p owners, the better move is to keep the 3060 Ti and save for a larger upgrade.

Who should upgrade from an RTX 3060 Ti?

Upgrade if the net cost is unusually low

Calculate the real cost:

4060 Ti purchase price − realistic resale value of your 3060 Ti

A single-digit or low-double-digit performance improvement rarely justifies a large cash payment. An exchange involving little or no additional money is much more reasonable, particularly if you also gain lower power use, a warranty, Frame Generation or AV1.

Upgrade for a specific feature

The 4060 Ti can make sense if you need:

  • DLSS Frame Generation in supported games.
  • Hardware AV1 encoding.
  • A lower-power card for a compact system.
  • More VRAM for a workload that demonstrably exceeds 8GB.

These are feature and efficiency upgrades more than raw-performance upgrades.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the 3060 Ti if you mainly play rasterized games

If you play mostly conventional rasterized games, use 1440p, and already meet your monitor’s frame-rate target, the 4060 Ti will not change enough to justify the expense. The 3060 Ti is not obsolete simply because a newer card exists.

Buying used versus buying new

Used RTX 3060 Ti

A used 3060 Ti can be excellent value when purchased substantially below the cost of a 4060 Ti. Check for:

  • Mining history.
  • Fan noise or bearing wear.
  • Dust and poor thermal performance.
  • Warranty status.
  • Required power connectors.
  • Physical clearance in your case.
  • A return policy or opportunity to test the card.

It lacks AV1 encoding and Frame Generation, and its power draw is higher, but it can deliver similar gaming performance for less money.

New RTX 4060 Ti

A new 4060 Ti is more attractive when the price gap to a used 3060 Ti is small and you value warranty coverage, efficiency or Ada features. Do not assume historical launch pricing is current: the 8GB model launched at $399 and the 16GB model at $499, but today’s prices depend on the exact partner SKU and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you buy an RTX 4060 Ti in 2026?

For a new purchase, the 4060 Ti has a higher opportunity cost than it did at launch. NVIDIA lists the newer RTX 5060 Ti family with Blackwell architecture, 8GB or 16GB of GDDR7, DLSS 4 features, 4,608 CUDA cores and a starting price of $379 on its official product page. That starting price does not guarantee that every 16GB or partner model costs less than every 4060 Ti, but it gives new 4060 Ti stock a high bar to clear.

Compare the exact prices, warranty, VRAM capacity and native benchmark performance before buying. A heavily discounted 4060 Ti can still be sensible for an efficient NVIDIA card, but a similarly priced RTX 5060 Ti is generally the more relevant new-product comparison. See NVIDIA’s RTX 5060 Ti product page.

Final verdict

  • Already own an RTX 3060 Ti: Keep it in most cases. Upgrade only for a very low net cost, lower power consumption, AV1, Frame Generation or a specific VRAM need.
  • Play at 1080p: The 4060 Ti is faster, but the difference may not be visible if the 3060 Ti already meets your refresh-rate target.
  • Play at 1440p: Keep the 3060 Ti and save for a larger performance jump unless the 4060 Ti is heavily discounted.
  • Need 16GB: The 4060 Ti 16GB can prevent capacity-related problems, but it is not a major compute upgrade and is not automatically the best 1440p choice.
  • Stream or record: The 4060 Ti’s AV1 encoder can justify the move if your software and platform support it.
  • Buying new in 2026: Compare the 4060 Ti directly with the RTX 5060 Ti before purchasing old stock.
