It is slightly faster overall in modern raster testing, generally stronger in ray tracing, uses far less power, and adds DLSS Frame Generation and AV1 encoding. The RTX 3080 Ti still makes sense when a tested used card is substantially cheaper and your priority is native raster performance—especially at 4K.
If you already own a working RTX 3080 Ti, do not replace it for a small FPS increase alone. Upgrade for lower heat, lower power use, newer features, a smaller card, or meaningful warranty coverage.

Which card is faster in games?
Aggregate results depend on resolution, rendering mode, game engine and settings. Tom’s Hardware’s June 2026 hierarchy tests native resolution without DLSS, FSR, XeSS or frame generation. Its suite combines raster and demanding ray-tracing games, so these figures are not DLSS-enabled results.

See the complete methodology and game list at Tom’s Hardware’s GPU hierarchy. Neither card guarantees smooth native 4K ray tracing in every current game; upscaling and adjusted settings are often necessary.
Why can the 4070 Super compete with half the bandwidth?
The 3080 Ti’s 912GB/s bandwidth and 10,240 CUDA cores look dominant on paper, but bandwidth and core count are not standalone performance scores. Ada’s newer scheduling and execution improvements, higher clocks, much larger L2 cache, and third-generation ray-tracing hardware reduce the amount of data that must travel across its narrower 192-bit interface. The result is competitive performance with a 220W graphics-power target instead of roughly 350W.
The 4070 Super is not universally faster. A workload that continuously streams large data sets, or a 4K game that is limited by memory throughput, can still favor the 3080 Ti. Both cards also have 12GB, so the newer card does not provide a VRAM-capacity upgrade.

Which is better for 1440p?
The RTX 4070 Super is the more balanced 1440p choice for a new purchase. It leads slightly in the cited native-raster aggregate, has newer ray-tracing hardware, consumes less power and supports Frame Generation. It is a particularly good fit for high-refresh monitors when the game has a sufficiently strong base frame rate.
The 3080 Ti remains a strong 1440p card. Owners should not expect a transformational jump by changing to a 4070 Super; the gain is usually a quality-of-life improvement rather than a new performance tier.
Which is better for 4K?
For native 4K rasterization, the 3080 Ti holds a small lead in the cited aggregate. That advantage varies by game and does not extend to every rendering mode. The 4070 Super leads the cited 4K ray-tracing result and offers DLSS features that can make difficult games more flexible.
Both GPUs have 12GB of VRAM. Texture packs, ray-tracing options, mods and background applications can push beyond that budget in some games, so neither card should be described as automatically sufficient for every 4K workload. Reduce texture or RT settings, use supported upscaling, and check frame-time behavior in the games you actually play.

DLSS, Frame Generation and image quality
DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction
The RTX 4070 Super supports DLSS 3.5 features including Super Resolution, DLAA, Ray Reconstruction and Frame Generation. Availability depends on the game. These modes can improve performance or image quality, but results vary with implementation and input resolution.
Frame Generation
Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames. It can make a high-refresh display feel smoother when the underlying game already delivers a reasonably high frame rate. It does not replace base rendering performance, can add latency, and may show artifacts in some scenes. A generated-frame number must not be compared directly with a native-rendering FPS number or used to claim that the 4070 Super is twice as fast.
The RTX 3080 Ti cannot use this RTX 40-series Frame Generation feature. NVIDIA’s own 1440p charts demonstrate intended feature support under vendor-selected settings; use independent testing for comparative performance.
Power, heat, noise and PSU requirements
NVIDIA rates the reference RTX 4070 Super at 220W total graphics power and 200W average gaming power, with a 650W recommended system PSU. The 3080 Ti is generally a 350W-class card. That difference affects the entire computer:
Rank #4
- Powered by GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER
- Integrated with 12GB GDDR6X 192-bit memory interface
- WINDFORCE cooling system
- Graphene nano lubricant
- Protection metal back plate
- The 4070 Super puts less heat into the case and is easier to cool quietly.
- It is better suited to compact cases and systems with moderate airflow.
- A 3080 Ti places greater demands on PSU quality, transient response, PCIe cabling and case ventilation.
- Founders Edition and partner cards can use different connectors, coolers, dimensions and power recommendations.
The 4070 Super Founders Edition is listed at 244mm long, 112mm wide and two slots, but add-in-board models vary. Check the exact card before buying. Its Founders Edition uses an adapter or compatible PCIe Gen 5 cable; partner implementations differ. A factory-overclocked card may warrant more PSU capacity than NVIDIA’s reference recommendation.
Streaming, recording and creator workloads
The 4070 Super has one eighth-generation NVENC encoder and AV1 encoding support, making it the better choice for streaming services that accept AV1, high-quality local recording and modern video workflows. The 3080 Ti remains useful for CUDA applications and conventional GPU rendering, but it lacks AV1 encoding.
There is no universal productivity winner. Application performance depends on codec, effects, CUDA optimization, VRAM use and whether the workload is compute- or bandwidth-limited.

Compare actual condition and availability, not launch MSRP. A new, retailer-sold 4070 Super with a return window can justify a premium over a marketplace card. Observed listings included a Newegg used or like-new 4070 Super around $729–$739 and higher, while a Best Buy listing at $609.99 and an NVIDIA Marketplace listing at $649.99 were unavailable. Should you upgrade from a 3080 Ti?
Do not make the switch for raw FPS alone. The cited raster difference ranges from a small 4070 Super lead at 1080p and 1440p to a small 3080 Ti lead at 4K. Upgrade when the practical benefits—roughly 130W less graphics power, lower heat, AV1, Frame Generation, a smaller card or a new warranty—solve a real problem and the resale loss is acceptable.
Used RTX 3080 Ti inspection checklist
