RTX 4080 vs. RTX 4090: Is the 4090 Worth It in 2026?

The RTX 4090 is faster, especially at 4K ray tracing, but the RTX 4080 can be the smarter buy. Compare performance, VRAM, power, prices, and 2026 alternatives.

Short answer: The RTX 4090 is the faster and more capable card, particularly for 4K ray tracing, path tracing, high-refresh 4K gaming, GPU rendering, and workloads that need more than 16GB of VRAM. The RTX 4080 is usually the smarter gaming purchase when it is substantially cheaper, especially for 1440p or standard 4K gaming.

At comparable prices, choose the RTX 4090. At the inflated prices these older cards can command in 2026, choose neither automatically: compare the RTX 4080 SUPER, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090 first. The 4090’s premium is most defensible when it stays roughly 25–35% above an equivalent RTX 4080-class card, or when its 24GB of VRAM is a genuine requirement.

First, which RTX 4080 are we comparing?

This comparison means the 16GB RTX 4080 launched in November 2022. NVIDIA also announced a 12GB RTX 4080, but officially unlaunched it before release because using the same name for two substantially different products was confusing. A retail 12GB RTX 4080 should not be treated as a normal version of the card discussed here.

There is also an important newer Ada option: the RTX 4080 SUPER. It launched on January 31, 2024, at a $999 MSRP, with 10,240 CUDA cores and faster memory. For a new Ada-generation purchase, the 4080 SUPER is generally more relevant than the original RTX 4080. The original 4080 only makes sense when its actual price is clearly lower.

RTX 4080 vs. RTX 4090: specifications

Specification RTX 4080 16GB RTX 4090 What it means
Architecture Ada Lovelace Ada Lovelace Both share the same generation and feature ecosystem
GPU AD103 AD102 The 4090 uses the larger flagship die
CUDA cores 9,728 16,384 The 4090 has about 68% more shader resources
Boost clock 2.51GHz 2.52GHz Nearly identical; the core-count difference matters much more
VRAM 16GB GDDR6X 24GB GDDR6X The 4090 has 50% more capacity
Memory bus 256-bit 384-bit The 4090 has a wider path to its memory
Memory bandwidth 717GB/s 1,008GB/s The 4090 has about 41% more bandwidth
Total graphics power 320W 450W The 4090 demands substantially more power and cooling
NVIDIA-recommended PSU 750W 850W The actual requirement depends on the whole system
Founders Edition size 304mm, 137mm wide, 3-slot 304mm, 137mm wide, 3-slot Partner cards can be considerably larger
Video encoding Dual eighth-generation NVENC; AV1 Dual eighth-generation NVENC; AV1 No major encoder advantage for the 4090
DLSS Frame Generation Yes Yes Both support the RTX 40-series feature set
DLSS Multi Frame Generation No No Exclusive to RTX 50-series GPUs

These specifications are based on NVIDIA’s official comparison data and NVIDIA’s product pages for the RTX 4080 family and RTX 4090. The similar boost clocks are worth noting: the 4090’s advantage does not come from running dramatically faster. It comes from having a much larger GPU, more CUDA and ray-tracing resources, a wider memory bus, and 50% more VRAM.

How much faster is the RTX 4090?

The most useful comparison depends on resolution and rendering method. The results below come from Tom’s Hardware’s current GPU hierarchy, which uses a geometric mean across eight rasterized games and five ray-traced games. They are a baseline rather than a promise for every individual title.

4K Ultra ray tracing 37.8 FPS 55.9 FPS 48%

See the complete Tom’s Hardware GPU hierarchy for the test methodology and current context.

1080p: usually a poor reason to buy a 4090

At 1080p, both cards are usually more GPU than a conventional 60Hz, 120Hz, or 144Hz display needs. The 4090’s large theoretical advantage largely disappears in the rasterized average because the processor, game engine, simulation, or frame-rate cap becomes the limiting factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 4090 can still make sense for an extremely high-refresh 1080p monitor, competitive games at very high frame rates, heavy mods, or unusually CPU-light titles. For ordinary 1080p gaming, however, the money is better spent on a faster CPU, a better monitor, or a less expensive current GPU.

1440p: the 4080 is already exceptionally fast

The RTX 4080 averages 130.4 FPS in the cited 1440p raster test, so the 4090’s 12% raster advantage often produces a smaller visible improvement than its price suggests. The difference grows to 37% in the 1440p ray-tracing test, making the 4090 more attractive if you use demanding RT effects and want to stay near a high-refresh target.

At 1440p, check the CPU before upgrading to a 4090. An older or mid-range processor can prevent the card from being fully utilized, particularly in strategy games, large open-world games, simulation-heavy titles, and competitive games at very high frame rates.

4K rasterization: a meaningful 4090 lead

At 4K with conventional raster rendering, the 4090 is approximately 28% faster in the cited aggregate. That can turn a borderline 70–80 FPS result into something closer to a comfortable 90–110 FPS result, depending on the game. It is a worthwhile advantage for a 4K 120Hz display, but it does not make every game exactly 28% faster and does not guarantee 120 FPS in new releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4K ray tracing and path tracing: the strongest case for the 4090

Ray tracing exposes the 4090’s additional shader, RT, memory, and bandwidth resources more clearly. The cited 4K RT average is 55.9 FPS on the 4090 versus 37.8 FPS on the 4080, a 48% advantage. The gap can be especially useful in games using very demanding ray-tracing presets or full path tracing.

Path tracing is more demanding than conventional rasterization and usually benefits from every unit of raw GPU performance available. The 4090 is the stronger choice between these two cards, but anyone buying a new card for path tracing in 2026 should compare the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 first rather than assuming an expensive used 4090 is the best route.

Native rendering, DLSS, and Frame Generation are not the same test

DLSS can make either card feel faster, but it should not be used to erase the underlying hardware difference. A fair comparison must state whether it is using:

  • Native raster rendering or native ray tracing.
  • DLSS Super Resolution, and which mode such as Quality or Performance.
  • Ray Reconstruction.
  • Path tracing or a conventional RT preset.
  • DLSS Frame Generation enabled or disabled.

DLSS Super Resolution renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output. Ray Reconstruction changes the way compatible ray-traced effects are denoised. Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames between conventionally rendered frames. These features can improve smoothness and image quality, but generated-frame FPS is not the same as base rendered FPS.

Both the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 support DLSS Frame Generation. Neither supports DLSS Multi Frame Generation, which is an RTX 50-series feature. NVIDIA also provides newer Frame Generation and Transformer-model overrides for RTX 40-series cards through supported NVIDIA App features. NVIDIA’s DLSS documentation explains the generation-specific support.

For example, if a game renders at 55 FPS on the 4090 and 38 FPS on the 4080 before Frame Generation, enabling it on both may produce much higher displayed numbers. That does not mean the cards have identical input response, base rendering performance, or headroom. When reading a review, look for both the native or base FPS and the displayed FPS with Frame Generation.

Price and value: the answer changes with the market

At launch MSRP

Card Launch MSRP 4K raster average 4K RT average
RTX 4080 16GB $1,199 89.3 FPS 37.8 FPS
RTX 4090 $1,599 114.5 FPS 55.9 FPS

NVIDIA launched the RTX 4090 on October 12, 2022, at $1,599, followed by the RTX 4080 16GB on November 16, 2022, at $1,199. The 4090 therefore cost about 33% more at launch. In return, it delivered about 28% more 4K raster performance, 48% more 4K RT performance, and 50% more VRAM. That made the 4090 a defensible premium purchase for 4K ray tracing and professional workloads, but not a universal value winner. NVIDIA’s launch announcement contains the original pricing and launch details.

Using only launch MSRP, the 4080 was slightly better value per average gaming frame in rasterization, while the 4090’s much larger RT lead made its premium easier to justify for ray-traced gaming. That conclusion cannot be carried unchanged into the used and remaining-stock market.

The 2026 price problem

A July 2026 GPUDrip price snapshot recorded an RTX 4080 SUPER at approximately $1,250 and an RTX 4090 at approximately $2,100. These were the lowest tracked eligible listings, including marketplace listings, and are a dated snapshot rather than a permanent market price. The 4090 was therefore about 68% more expensive than the 4080 SUPER in that example.

Against the 4080 SUPER, the 4090 delivered roughly 25% more 4K raster performance and 42% more 4K ray-tracing performance in the cited Tom’s Hardware figures. Paying 68% more for those gaming gains is poor value unless you need the 4090’s 24GB capacity, maximum performance, or a professional workflow where shorter render times generate a return.

A practical price-gap rule

Calculate the premium using the actual prices you can buy: 4090 premium = 4090 price ÷ comparable 4080 price − 1.

  • For mostly rasterized 4K gaming, a 4090 premium near 25–30% is easier to justify than a much larger premium.
  • For heavy 4K ray tracing, a premium approaching the measured 40–48% performance advantage can make sense, provided your display and CPU can use it.
  • For 24GB-dependent AI or rendering workloads, the performance-per-dollar calculation is incomplete: a 16GB card that cannot fit the job may be unusable for that configuration.

There is no universal break-even number because the extra VRAM, power draw, warranty, condition, and application performance all matter. As a general buying rule, the 4090 should not cost 60–100% more than a comparable 4080-class card unless its capacity is essential.

VRAM: 16GB is enough for many games, but not every workload

Gaming

For most 1440p gaming, 16GB is sufficient. The RTX 4080 also remains capable at 4K, although the margin depends on texture quality, ray tracing, mods, resolution scaling, the game’s memory management, and how many years you expect the card to last.

The 4090’s 24GB does not automatically create 50% more FPS. Its capacity is valuable when a game or application actually needs it; otherwise, the card’s additional compute and bandwidth—not simply the unused VRAM—drive most of the performance advantage.

If a workload exceeds 16GB, however, the problem is different from merely being 10% or 20% slower. The RTX 4080 may stutter severely, spill data into much slower system memory, reduce texture quality, or fail to run the selected configuration efficiently. No amount of DLSS changes a hard VRAM-capacity problem.

Local AI and image generation

The RTX 4090 is the clear choice when a model or configuration genuinely needs more than 16GB of VRAM. A 4080 can be extremely fast for an AI task that fits, but memory capacity determines whether the model, image resolution, batch size, or context length fits at all.

  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

Do not treat 24GB as a universal AI requirement. Before buying, check:

  • Model size and quantization.
  • Precision, such as FP16 or lower-bit formats.
  • Context length for language models.
  • Batch size.
  • Image or video resolution.
  • Whether CPU or system-memory offloading is supported and acceptable.

Offloading can make a configuration run, but often at a substantial speed penalty. The Puget Systems Stable Diffusion testing also shows why software implementation and the selected execution path can materially change results. The right question is not whether 24GB is always required; it is whether your specific model and settings fit comfortably in 16GB.

Blender and GPU rendering

The 4090 is generally faster in Blender, V-Ray, Octane, Redshift, and similar GPU renderers, but the size of the improvement varies by renderer and scene. GPU rendering is one of the clearest cases where the 4090 can repay its premium: shorter render times matter more when you render animations, repeat jobs frequently, or earn money with the machine.

VRAM can be decisive here as well. A scene that exceeds 16GB may force compromises or prevent a render from completing on the 4080, while the 4090’s 24GB provides useful room. Puget Systems’ consumer GPU content-creation testing emphasizes that different render engines scale differently, so check benchmarks for the exact application rather than assuming every creative workload gains the same percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Video editing and streaming

The two cards share dual eighth-generation NVENC encoders and AV1 encoding support. That means the 4090 is not automatically better for recording, streaming, or exporting every video project. Editing timelines can be limited by the CPU, codec, storage, effects, application, or source media rather than shader performance.

Choose the 4090 for video work when the application benefits from its additional GPU compute or 24GB of VRAM. Choose the 4080 when your workflow is primarily encoder-based and both cards provide the same required AV1 or NVENC features.

Power, cooling, case fit, and the 16-pin connector

Power and efficiency

The RTX 4080 is rated at 320W total graphics power, compared with 450W for the RTX 4090. NVIDIA recommends a 750W system PSU for the 4080 and 850W for the 4090. Those are platform recommendations, not guarantees for every build: an overclocked CPU, many drives, a lower-quality PSU, or transient loads can change the appropriate choice.

NVIDIA lists 251W average gaming power for its RTX 4080 Founders Edition and 315W for its RTX 4090 Founders Edition, measured across 22 games and several resolutions. The 4090’s 450W rating is therefore not a claim that it consumes 450W in every game. Nevertheless, it produces more heat under sustained workloads and needs a case, cooler, and power supply that can handle it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Third-party testing from TechSpot found the RTX 4080 used roughly 22–23% less total system power than the RTX 4090 in its tested games while the 4090 remained substantially faster. The 4080 is the easier choice for a quieter system, a smaller power supply, or a case with limited airflow.

Physical clearance

The Founders Edition versions of both cards are listed at 304mm long, 137mm wide, and three slots. That does not make them interchangeable in every case. Factory-overclocked and premium partner cards may be longer, thicker, or wider, and their coolers can extend beyond the nominal slot count.

Before buying, check the exact model’s:

  • GPU length and width.
  • Number of occupied slots.
  • Front radiator and drive-cage clearance.
  • Side-panel clearance around the power connector.
  • Recommended PSU and included adapter requirements.

Installing the power connector safely

Both cards use a 16-pin PCIe power connector or an adapter, but the 4090’s higher power demand makes installation discipline especially important. Historical investigations linked overheated or melted connectors to issues including incomplete insertion, cable strain, sharp bends close to the plug, debris, and side-loading. This is a documented installation and hardware-risk history, not proof that every 16-pin connector is inherently unsafe.

Which card should you buy?

Buyer or workload Better choice Why
1440p gaming at 60–165Hz RTX 4080 or a cheaper current alternative The 4090 is often CPU-limited or excessive
4K raster gaming at 60–120Hz RTX 4080 in most cases It delivers strong 4K performance with lower power and heat
4K ray-traced gaming RTX 4090 if the premium is reasonable The performance gap is much larger with RT

RTX 4080, RTX 4090, RTX 4080 SUPER, RTX 5080, or RTX 5090?

The RTX 4090 was NVIDIA’s fastest mainstream GeForce GPU during the Ada generation, but that description is no longer current. NVIDIA launched the Blackwell-based RTX 5090 on January 30, 2025 at a $1,999 MSRP, replacing the 4090 as the flagship. The RTX 5080 launched at $999. NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series announcement provides those launch prices and generation details.

The RTX 50-series also adds DLSS Multi Frame Generation, which neither 4080 nor 4090 supports. That does not mean a 5080 or 5090 is automatically the best deal: real-world pricing and availability have been volatile, and an older card at a substantial discount can still be sensible. It does mean a new 4090 should be judged against current-generation prices rather than against its 2022 MSRP alone.

  • Consider the RTX 4080 SUPER if you want a 16GB Ada card and find it at a sensible price. Do not pay more for the original 4080 than for the faster, lower-MSRP SUPER model.
  • Consider the RTX 5080 when its actual price is close to the 4080-class options and you value the newer generation and Multi Frame Generation.
  • Consider the RTX 5090 when you need the highest current consumer-GPU performance or more than the 4090 can offer, and its price is within your budget.
  • Consider non-NVIDIA alternatives if CUDA, NVIDIA-specific AI software, or top-tier ray tracing is not important to your workload; compare the exact application support and current prices rather than choosing by VRAM alone.

Buying a used RTX 4090

A used 4090 can be attractive when it is priced close to a new or discounted 4080-class card, but the model name does not tell you its condition. The card may have spent years under high gaming or rendering loads. Continuous use does not automatically mean it is ruined, and mining history alone is not a sufficient diagnosis; testing and physical condition matter more.

Before paying, check:

  • The 16-pin connector and adapter for discoloration, melting, looseness, or heat damage.
  • GPU temperature and hotspot temperature under a sustained load.
  • Fan noise, bearing noise, and whether all fans operate normally.
  • Coil whine, accepting that some coil whine is a sample-specific nuisance rather than a performance failure.
  • Memory errors and stability during an extended benchmark or game session.
  • Physical sag, bent brackets, damaged PCB, missing screws, and cooler tampering.
  • Warranty transferability and the seller’s return policy.
  • The exact board-partner dimensions and power requirements.

Do not buy a used 4090 without a way to test it or return it. A healthy connector, stable temperatures, clean benchmark results, and remaining warranty can matter more than saving a small amount over a newer card.

Final buying checklist

  1. Set your target resolution and refresh rate. A 60Hz 1440p monitor rarely justifies a 4090; a 4K 144Hz display can.
  2. Separate rasterized gaming from ray tracing and path tracing. The 4090’s advantage grows substantially with RT.
  3. Check your CPU, especially for 1080p, 1440p, simulation-heavy games, and very high refresh rates.
  4. Decide whether 16GB of VRAM actually fits your games, AI models, scenes, and batch sizes.
  5. Compare the real price gap, not the launch MSRP gap. A 60–100% 4090 premium is difficult to justify for gaming alone.
  6. Compare the RTX 4080 SUPER, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090 before buying a new 40-series card in 2026.
  7. Verify the exact card’s dimensions, PSU recommendation, connector, and case clearance.
  8. If buying used, test the card and inspect the power connector, temperatures, fans, memory stability, and warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the RTX 4090 worth it over the RTX 4080 for 1440p gaming?

Usually not for a 60–165Hz display. The RTX 4080 is already very fast at 1440p, and the CPU or game engine can limit the 4090. The 4090 becomes more defensible for 1440p with heavy ray tracing, extreme refresh rates, or a reasonable used-market price.

Does DLSS Frame Generation make the RTX 4080 as fast as the RTX 4090?

No. Both cards support DLSS Frame Generation, but generated displayed FPS is not the same as base rendered FPS. Compare native or base FPS separately from Frame Generation results, and label DLSS mode, Ray Reconstruction, and path tracing settings.

Do I need 24GB of VRAM for gaming or AI?

Not automatically. 16GB is sufficient for many 1440p games and numerous AI configurations. The RTX 4090’s 24GB matters when your model, context length, batch size, resolution, textures, mods, or 3D scene exceeds what fits efficiently in 16GB.

Can a 750W PSU run an RTX 4090?

NVIDIA recommends an 850W system PSU for the RTX 4090, compared with 750W for the RTX 4080. A 750W unit may work in some carefully matched systems, but it is below NVIDIA’s recommendation and leaves less margin for the CPU, transient loads, PSU age, and overclocking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a used RTX 4090 a safe purchase?

It can be, if the price is attractive and the card passes testing. Inspect the 16-pin connector, cable, temperatures, hotspot, fans, memory stability, PCB, and warranty. Mining history by itself does not prove a card is damaged, but do not buy without a return option or a reliable way to test it.

The Bottom Line

Best raw performance between these two: RTX 4090. It is about 28% faster at 4K rasterization and 48% faster at 4K ray tracing in the cited aggregate, and its 24GB of VRAM can make the difference in AI and professional workloads.

Best purchase: the card that meets your workload at the lower current price. The RTX 4080 is the better fit for efficient 1440p or standard 4K gaming, while the 4090 earns its premium for 4K RT, high-refresh 4K, GPU rendering, and workloads that genuinely need 24GB. In 2026, do not buy either at an inflated price without comparing the RTX 4080 SUPER, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090.
