The pre-launch figures were close for one card and wrong for the other. Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 launched with a 575W Total Graphics Power (TGP) rating, not 600W; the RTX 5080 launched at 360W, not 400W. Those are reference-card power budgets, not constant readings at the wall—and the 5090’s rating still makes power supply, cabling and cooling important parts of a build.

Where the 600W and 400W figures came from

Before launch, reports attributed to leaker Kopite7kimi put the RTX 5090 near 600W and the RTX 5080 at 400W. These were unconfirmed estimates, not Nvidia specifications. Tom’s Hardware reported the initial figures in September 2024.

Later reports revised the expected ratings to 575W and 360W—values that matched Nvidia’s eventual reference specifications. The revised leak coverage was still reporting leaks, not official confirmation. Nvidia announced the desktop RTX 50 Series on January 6, 2025, and its product pages established the final reference ratings.

The 600W figure may have been a rounded estimate or a preliminary board-power target; it may also have referred to a partner card’s higher limit. Another source of confusion is that Nvidia lists a 600W-capable PCIe Gen 5 cable for the RTX 5090. Cable capacity and the card’s rated power budget are different specifications.

Card Pre-launch rumor Nvidia reference TGP PSU context
GeForce RTX 5090 About 600W; unconfirmed leak 575W Nvidia’s baseline recommendation is 1,000W; the listed PCIe Gen 5 cable is rated for 600W
GeForce RTX 5080 400W; unconfirmed leak 360W MSI’s standard gaming guidance lists an 850W system PSU

Nvidia lists the RTX 5090’s 575W TGP on its RTX 5090 product page and the RTX 5080’s 360W TGP on its RTX 5080 product page. TGP is the card’s rated board-power budget; it does not mean the GPU consumes that exact amount continuously.

Both reference figures exceed the previous generation’s equivalent reference ratings: the RTX 4090 was rated at 450W and the RTX 4080 at 320W. These increases concern graphics-card power, not total PC consumption or what a meter at the wall will show.

What power measurements actually tell you

Power figures are easy to miscompare because they can describe different points in a system:

  • TGP or TBP: a graphics card’s rated board-power budget. Vendors do not always use the terms identically, so compare like-for-like specifications.
  • GPU-only draw: power measured at the card’s PCIe slot and auxiliary connections.
  • System draw: consumption of the whole PC, including the CPU, fans, drives and other components.
  • Wall draw: power taken from the outlet, including losses from converting AC power in the PSU.
  • Transient power: brief spikes that can rise above a card’s nominal rating.

Independent results vary with the game, settings, resolution, frame cap and measurement method. GamersNexus measured the RTX 5080 at roughly 298W in a Final Fantasy XIV 4K test, around 290W in an efficiency test and 330W in F1 24 with ray tracing. In the cited F1 24 comparison, the RTX 5090 reached about 569W; it measured around 520W in a separate efficiency test. These are workload-specific readings, not fixed draw figures or new official limits. See the GamersNexus RTX 5080 comparison.

In another review, GamersNexus measured the RTX 5090 at approximately 569W in a demanding test, close to its 575W TGP. Its RTX 5090 Founders Edition review also discusses the card’s cooling design.

Choosing a PSU for an RTX 5090 or RTX 5080

Nvidia’s baseline recommendation for the RTX 5090 is a 1,000W PSU. That is a starting point for a stock system, not a guarantee that every 1,000W unit is suitable. Tom’s Hardware reports a transient measurement of about 659W for the card in one test; a high-end CPU and the rest of the PC add to system demand. Brief spikes and component mix help explain why the recommended PSU is substantially higher than the GPU’s TGP.

A reputable 1,000W unit can suit a stock RTX 5090 gaming build, while more capacity is sensible for a power-hungry CPU, factory-overclocked card, manual overclock or planned upgrades. MSI’s guidance lists 1,000W for standard RTX 5090 gaming systems and 850W for standard RTX 5080 systems, with higher recommendations for some overclocked or high-end CPU combinations. Its PSU recommendation table is one manufacturer reference, not a universal rule.

What to check before reusing a PSU

  • Look up the exact graphics card, including its factory power limit and connector requirements; partner models can differ from the Founders Edition.
  • Account for the CPU, drives, fans and other hardware rather than sizing around GPU wattage alone.
  • Check the PSU’s quality, age, transient handling, connector support and warranty—not only its printed wattage.
  • Prefer a compatible native ATX 3.x/PCIe 5.x GPU cable when the PSU provides one. If using an adapter with a compatible older PSU, follow the GPU and PSU manufacturers’ instructions.
  • Use only modular cables specified for the exact PSU model. Modular PSU cables are not interchangeable just because their plugs fit.
  • If an adapter uses multiple 8-pin inputs, connect separate PSU cables as directed by its manufacturer.

For a complete system estimate, Seasonic’s wattage calculator can be a useful starting point; the vendor says its estimate is a minimum and advises extra headroom for peak loads, high-end graphics cards and upgrades. A calculator cannot assess a specific unit’s quality or prove that an unannounced GPU specification is genuine.

The 600W cable is not a 600W default draw

Nvidia’s listed cable requirement for the RTX 5090 is a 600W PCIe Gen 5 cable, while the card’s reference TGP is 575W. The cable rating describes capacity; it does not change the card’s rated power budget or mean the card draws 600W by default.

Seat the high-power connector fully and keep the cable from being sharply bent immediately at the plug. Make sure the case side panel does not press against the connection. These are practical installation checks, not evidence that every connector or cable is inherently unsafe. If a plug, socket or cable is damaged, discolored or unusually hot, stop using the system and consult the card and PSU manufacturers.

Cooling and fit matter at 575W

The RTX 5090 Founders Edition’s compact two-slot cooler and gasketed liquid-metal thermal interface were designed for a 575W-class card, according to GamersNexus. That design does not describe every partner card: board partners can use different dimensions, cooling systems, fan curves and power limits.

Before buying or installing a card, check the exact model’s length and thickness, its power-connector position and the clearance available inside the case. Also consider airflow, room temperature and where the cooler sends heat. A hybrid or liquid-cooled card has different space and radiator requirements from an air-cooled model. Memory temperature can also matter, depending on the card’s design; core temperature alone does not tell the whole thermal story.

More power does not translate directly into more performance

A higher power ceiling can let a GPU sustain higher clocks, but performance does not rise in proportion to watts. The result depends on the workload and whether the card was reaching its power limit in the first place. Rasterized games, ray tracing and path tracing can stress a GPU differently; resolution, frame-rate caps, CPU bottlenecks, DLSS and frame generation also change the workload.

In GamersNexus testing, the RTX 5090 delivered much higher performance than the RTX 5080 in the tested suite, while the RTX 5080 showed a more favorable efficiency profile in several tests. Those results describe the reviewed games and methods, not every title or configuration. The comparison is available in the RTX 5080 review.

Power limits can help, but they are not a PSU fix

Reducing the RTX 5090’s power limit can lower heat and noise. Tom’s Hardware found that a limit around 500W could retain performance in many games in its test suite. At an 80% limit, the card would be capped around 460W, but performance can fall more in workloads that press the power limit, including some ray-tracing and path-tracing scenarios. Your results will vary by game and card.

A power limit is not the same as undervolting: it sets a ceiling on permitted power, while undervolting changes the voltage-frequency behavior. Neither adjustment makes an underspecified or poor-quality PSU safe. Treat power limiting as a tuning option after the system has an appropriate PSU and correctly installed cabling.

Keep later RTX 50-series rumors separate

The RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 figures above are published reference specifications for the original cards. They should not be conflated with later, unconfirmed product reports. For example, Tom’s Hardware reported that a Seasonic calculator listing appeared to show an unannounced RTX 5080 Super at 415W; that is not an Nvidia-confirmed specification. See the report on the calculator listing.
