What happened to Kyiv’s bridges?
Reports published Oct. 2–3 describe repeated strikes on the Southern Bridge, also called Pivdennyi, beginning Oct. 1 and continuing into Oct. 2. By Oct. 2, the Associated Press reported that three of Kyiv’s six road bridges over the Dnipro had been fully or partially closed.
Early on Oct. 3, the Northern Bridge, or Pivnichnyi, was struck. The Associated Press reported damage to its road surface and trolleybus cables, with traffic suspended. The reports describe damaged infrastructure and traffic interruptions; they do not confirm that either bridge collapsed.
What damage was reported?
Southern Bridge
Euronews, citing city officials, reported damage to a pier, the road surface, a barrier and a protective concrete structure around the metro line. The bridge carries both road traffic and metro service, so the reported damage involved infrastructure beyond the roadway.

Northern Bridge
Reports describe damage to the road surface and overhead trolleybus cables. Traffic was suspended after the Oct. 3 strike, according to the Associated Press.
How are the strikes affecting travel?
Restrictions and closures have pushed drivers onto alternative routes and caused major congestion. The Associated Press reported that traffic was backed up for a third day on Oct. 3. It also quoted Kyiv resident Oleksandr Pihalo describing the roads as “jammed solid” and saying, “It’s a total mess on the road today.” Pihalo said one trip of 4 kilometers (2½ miles) took him 45 minutes; that is an individual account, not a citywide travel-time average.

The Kyiv Independent reported that city authorities announced restrictions during air-raid alerts, including temporary directional or complete stops on specific bridges during the first 15 minutes of an alert. These reports do not establish current bridge access or live traffic conditions, so they should not be treated as present-day travel directions.
Why do the crossings matter?
Kyiv’s bridges connect neighborhoods on the east and west banks of the Dnipro. Reuters reported that, before Russia’s 2022 invasion, over a third of the capital’s 3 million residents lived on the eastern bank, while most government institutions and companies were on the western bank. That is a pre-invasion description, not a current population count.

Reuters also reported an estimate from economic analyst Andriy Shevchishin that about 500,000 people commute from the left bank to the right bank daily. The report does not provide a methodology for that estimate, so it should be understood as an attributed figure rather than an independently verified count.
What is known about the purpose of the strikes?
The purpose has not been independently established in the reviewed reports. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that the Northern Bridge was used to facilitate troop movement and deliveries of military cargo. That is the Russian government’s stated rationale, not an independently verified finding.

By contrast, aviation expert and former Antonov test engineer Kostiantyn Kryvolap, quoted by The Kyiv Independent, argued that destroying the bridge was unlikely to be the aim and that the strikes may instead be intended to disrupt logistics and create psychological pressure. He said: “Destroying a bridge with a 50-kilogram explosive charge, even with a highly effective warhead designed to destroy steel bridge structures, is a major exaggeration. It is practically impossible. For a bridge like this, these strikes are more like mosquito bites.” His comments are an expert’s interpretation; the reporting does not resolve the question of intent.

The casualty accounts in the Oct. 3 reports differ. The Associated Press said no casualties had been reported at the time of its account; The Kyiv Independent reported two people injured. The available coverage therefore does not establish a consistent casualty count for the Northern Bridge incident.
