Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, is the major boss hidden in Volcano Manor on Mt. Gelmir. The encounter begins against the God-Devouring Serpent and immediately continues into Rykard’s own phase. Before entering, decide whether you still want to complete Tanith’s assassination requests: the available guides warn that killing Rykard ends Tanith’s questline and can prevent manor targets that you have not yet unlocked.
Who is Rykard?
In Elden Ring’s wider story, the Elden Ring has been shattered and Marika’s demigod offspring claimed its Great Runes, leading to the Shattering; that setting is outlined on the official Elden Ring game page. Rykard is the Lord of Volcano Manor and an enemy of the Erdtree’s order.
The community-maintained Eldenpedia summarizes his transformation as a union with the God-Devouring Serpent after he fed himself and his Great Rune to it. That account is a synthesis of in-game lore and item descriptions rather than a surfaced official Rykard biography; consult the Eldenpedia entry for the indexed lore.
Where is Rykard in Elden Ring?
Rykard is encountered in Volcano Manor on Mt. Gelmir. The boss arena is reached in either of two broad ways described by encounter guides:

Tanith’s assassination-request route
Join Volcano Manor, complete Tanith’s assassination requests, and accept her invitation to reach the boss area. This route lets you experience the manor’s request chain before the fight. The route description is covered by GameSpot’s Rykard guide.
Volcano Manor exploration route
You can instead explore the manor’s interior and follow its hidden route to the arena. This is the direct environmental-exploration option described in the same GameSpot walkthrough.

Do you have to finish Volcano Manor quests first?
No. The guides describe both the request route and the exploration route, so completing every assassination is not presented as a requirement for reaching Rykard. However, Gamer Guides warns that defeating him concludes Tanith’s questline and may close manor targets that have not yet been unlocked.
If you want any remaining Volcano Manor requests, complete and turn them in before entering the boss fight. If you are finished with that content, either route can take you onward to Rykard.

What happens when you enter the arena?
The fight has two successive phases:
- God-Devouring Serpent: the opening phase.
- Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy: the second phase after the serpent encounter.
There is an important pickup immediately inside the arena near the entrance: the Serpent-Hunter. It is an in-game weapon placed for this encounter, not a separate purchase or accessory. The encounter guides explain that its attacks produce long-range effects in this fight, making it the clearest practical choice for engaging the boss from a safer distance. How to beat Rykard
1. Pick up and equip the Serpent-Hunter
As soon as you enter, collect the Serpent-Hunter near the arena entrance and equip it. Its special encounter behavior supplies the long-range attacks intended for this battle. You do not need to buy a real-world product or obtain a separate item outside the game.

2. Start with the God-Devouring Serpent
Use the Serpent-Hunter’s long-range attacks to pressure the serpent while maintaining enough space to react. Keep your camera on the boss, avoid standing in hazards or attack paths, and use the arena’s room to reposition rather than committing to unsafe close-range exchanges.

3. Continue into Rykard’s phase
The fight transitions directly to Rykard after the serpent phase. Keep using the Serpent-Hunter, continue attacking from range, and prioritize survival over greed when an attack pattern forces you to move. The same weapon remains the encounter’s defining practical tool in both stages.

4. Treat the encounter as one continuous boss fight
Because the two phases are successive, conserve healing and avoid spending resources simply to rush the first health bar. Enter the second phase ready to repeat the ranged approach and adapt to Rykard’s attacks.

Should you fight Rykard now?
- Fight now if you have completed the Volcano Manor requests you care about and want to progress to the boss rewards.
- Wait if Tanith still has assassination requests you want to experience or targets you want to unlock.
- Choose your route based on preference: Tanith’s chain for the manor-request experience, or exploration for a direct path through the building.
Rykard is therefore both a two-phase boss encounter and a progression decision: the Serpent-Hunter makes the battle’s intended ranged strategy immediately available, while the timing of your victory determines whether Volcano Manor content remains accessible.
