The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is generally the faster gaming CPU, but the 5700X3D is often the more sensible AM4 upgrade if it costs substantially less. In TechSpot’s 2026 comparison across 14 games at Medium settings, the 5700X3D averaged 5% slower. That result is a useful reference, not a promise for every game or system: the difference changes with the game, resolution, graphics card and test setup. For an existing AM4 owner, the decision comes down to the actual local price gap, motherboard support and cooling cost.
How do the 5800X3D and 5700X3D compare?
Both are Zen 3 processors for the AM4 platform, with eight cores, 16 threads, 105 W default TDP and 3D V-Cache. Their most visible specification difference is clock speed: the 5800X3D has higher base and maximum boost clocks. Cache figures need a little care because AMD describes them differently on the two product pages.

The clock difference helps explain why the 5800X3D tends to lead in CPU-limited gaming, but clock speed alone does not predict the performance gap in a particular game. The two processors share the same core and thread count, socket generation and broad cache advantage over many older AM4 CPUs.
How much faster is the 5800X3D in games?
There is no single FPS difference that applies across a library of games. In TechSpot’s 2026 revisit, the 5700X3D was 5% slower on average across 14 games tested at Medium settings. That is a result for that review’s games and test conditions, not a guaranteed uplift for every player.

GamersNexus’s 2024 tests show how game-specific the gap can be: the 5800X3D led by about 3% in one Starfield test and about 9% in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1080p; another game was close to a tie. Those figures describe individual tests, not a general average.
Why your results may differ
- Resolution and graphics settings: At higher resolutions or demanding settings, the graphics card may become the limiting component, leaving less room for a faster CPU to raise average frame rates.
- Graphics card and game: CPU-heavy games and high-refresh-rate setups can expose CPU differences more clearly than GPU-limited play.
- Test suite: A review’s average reflects the particular games, settings and hardware it chose. Use results from games you actually play when deciding whether a premium is worthwhile.
Which one is the better value?
The 5700X3D launched at a $249 suggested price in January 2024. PC Gamer reported a $349 price for the 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition in June 2026. Those figures refer to different dates and product contexts; neither establishes today’s street price, local availability or which CPU is cheaper in your market.

Compare current offers where you live, including whether each processor is new or used, shipping, seller reputation, return policy and warranty. Add any cooler purchase to the total. Then weigh the real price difference against relevant gaming results: if your games are GPU-limited, or the 5800X3D costs much more, a small CPU uplift may not justify the premium. If the local price gap is small or a CPU-bound game you play benefits, the faster chip can make sense.
A practical buying check
- Check the games and resolution you care about. Look for comparable CPU-limited tests, especially at settings and with a graphics card similar to your own.
- Compare complete local costs. Include condition, shipping, seller terms and any cooler you need, rather than relying on launch prices.
- Verify your motherboard support. Find the exact board model and revision on the manufacturer’s CPU-support page, then check the required BIOS version and update instructions.
- Consider the platform horizon. These are drop-in upgrade candidates for suitable AM4 systems. For a new PC, compare the cost of a complete platform and newer CPU alternatives instead of judging either AM4 chip in isolation.
Will either processor work in your AM4 motherboard?
AM4 and DDR4 make both CPUs relevant to owners who want to upgrade without replacing their whole platform. Compatibility still depends on the exact motherboard and BIOS. AMD lists X570, X470, B550, B450 and A520 among the 5800X3D’s supporting chipsets, but a chipset list does not establish support for every board model or revision. Check the board manufacturer’s CPU-support list and BIOS notes before buying; follow its update procedure while your current CPU is still installed if an update is required.

What should you know about cooling?
AMD says the boxed Ryzen 7 5800X3D does not include a thermal solution and recommends a liquid cooler for optimal performance on its product page. If you do not already have suitable cooling, include that cost when comparing upgrades or planning a build. This product-page recommendation is specific to the 5800X3D; it does not establish that the 5700X3D requires a liquid cooler.
