The 6.9 GHz Ryzen 7 9800X3D demonstration was real, but it was not a normal overclock. ASUS China general manager Tony Yu reportedly pushed the eight-core Zen 5 processor to approximately 6.9 GHz using liquid nitrogen (LN2). Reports place the accompanying Counter-Strike 2 result at roughly 1,200 to 1,263 FPS, while the widely repeated 1,480-FPS figure is not adequately verified by the strongest available evidence.
In other words: the extreme overclock happened, but the headline should not be read as proof that a retail 9800X3D delivers 1,480 FPS in ordinary gaming.

The best-supported CS2 figure is closer to 1,263 FPS
The most specific corroborated CS2 number is approximately 1,262.9 FPS, reported for a 1080p, maximum-settings test. Other reports round the result to about 1,200 FPS or describe it simply as exceeding 1,000 FPS. TweakTown and CHIP are among the coverage citing the more precise 1,262.9-FPS result.
The 1,480-FPS claim appears in later coverage, including TechBloat, but the available evidence does not establish a primary screenshot, video, benchmark log or complete test methodology for that exact number. It could represent a different scene, a peak reading, a later retest or a transcription error. It should not be presented as the settled CS2 result.
| Figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| 6.9 GHz | Realistic as an LN2 extreme-overclocking demonstration, not a normal daily clock. |
| About 1,200 FPS | A broadly reported rounded CS2 result under controlled conditions. |
| 1,262.9 FPS | The clearest specific CS2 figure reported by multiple accounts. |
| 1,480 FPS | Not sufficiently verified by the strongest available primary evidence. |
Why LN2 changes the meaning of 6.9 GHz
Liquid nitrogen is not an unusually powerful version of an air cooler or conventional water loop. It is a temporary cooling medium for specialist bench testing. The setup normally requires an exposed test bench, insulation against condensation, constant coolant replenishment and close monitoring of temperature, voltage and stability.

That does not establish a safe 24/7 operating point. An enclosed gaming PC cannot simply reproduce the demonstration with a 360-mm all-in-one cooler.

Extreme tuning also carries risks including crashes, data corruption, silicon degradation, motherboard and power-delivery stress, socket damage and condensation-related hardware failure. The reported demonstration should therefore be treated as an overclocking showcase, not as a configuration for inexperienced owners to copy.
What the CS2 benchmark does—and does not—prove
A four-digit FPS reading is meaningful only alongside its test conditions. The available reports do not provide a complete, independently reproducible sheet covering every relevant variable, such as the exact map or benchmark route, demo or bot configuration, BIOS settings, memory timings, GPU, driver, game build, background processes and whether the number was an average, maximum or instantaneous reading.
That matters because CS2 performance can change substantially between a controlled benchmark scene and an actual match. Smoke-heavy fights, player counts, map sections, workshop content and background activity can all affect frame rate and frame-time consistency. A menu or unusually light scene can also produce a much larger number than demanding gameplay.

The result should not be reduced to “6.9 GHz equals 1,480 FPS.” Performance also depends on instructions per clock, 3D V-Cache behavior, memory latency, game-engine scheduling, GPU workload and frame-time variance. Reports also sometimes mix the CS2 numbers with even higher figures from Valorant; those games and measurements should be kept separate.

How unusual is this compared with normal 9800X3D performance?
Ordinary review systems produce much lower—but more useful—figures because they use retail hardware, conventional cooling and repeatable gaming tests. For example, one WePC review reported a 601-FPS average in its CS2 test alongside a 211-FPS 99th-percentile result.
That is not a direct apples-to-apples comparison with the LN2 demonstration. The two tests may differ in GPU, resolution, settings, memory, software and benchmark scene. Still, the contrast illustrates why a controlled extreme result should not be treated as the expected experience of every 9800X3D owner.
AMD’s official product material lists a 5.2 GHz maximum boost clock. Individual retail chips can behave differently because of silicon quality, motherboard firmware, cooling, memory and workload. The 6.9 GHz demonstration does not mean all 9800X3D processors can reach that speed.

What ordinary owners can tune
For daily use, the sensible approach is AMD-supported platform tuning rather than manual all-core frequency chasing:

- AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D Gaming and Content Creation Processor
- Max. Boost Clock : Up to 5.7 GHz; Base Clock: 4.3 GHz
- Form Factor: Desktops , Boxed Processor
- Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
- Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO): Lets the processor manage boost behavior within configured power, current and thermal limits.
- Curve Optimizer: A negative curve may reduce the voltage required for a given workload, potentially improving efficiency and boost behavior when stable.
- Thermal limits: Sensible limits can reduce heat and noise, though they may also reduce peak performance.
- DDR5 EXPO: A validated memory profile can improve performance and latency, but it still requires stability testing.
- Memory tuning: Timings and latency can matter in CPU-limited esports games, but advertised speeds are not guaranteed on every CPU and motherboard combination.
Some reports describe approximately 5.75 GHz under moderate tuning in certain circumstances, but that is not a guaranteed target. Every overclock should be validated with the reader’s actual games, memory configuration and workloads. A system that completes one benchmark can still crash during a long match or corrupt data under a different workload.

At 1,200 FPS, the nominal frame interval is about 0.83 ms. At 1,480 FPS, it is about 0.68 ms. Those figures describe the interval between rendered frames; they are not total input latency.
Monitor scanout, pixel response, input polling, game queues, rendering behavior and frame-time consistency all remain important. A 1,200-FPS benchmark also does not mean a 540-Hz monitor will display every rendered frame, nor does it guarantee that moving from 500 FPS to 1,200 FPS will produce a proportional improvement in competitive play.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For players, stable frame times and useful 1% lows are generally more informative than a spectacular peak counter. A 9800X3D can make sense for 1080p competitive gaming at very high refresh rates, but the CPU alone cannot guarantee a specific refresh rate in every match.

Should you buy a Ryzen 7 9800X3D?
| Use case | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|
| 1080p competitive gaming | A strong fit when chasing high, consistent CPU-limited FPS and using a high-refresh display. |
| 1440p gaming | Potentially worthwhile, but the GPU often becomes the main bottleneck. |
| 4K gaming | Prioritize the graphics card unless the games or settings remain CPU-limited. |
| Mixed productivity | Compare multicore performance and platform cost; an X3D gaming CPU is not automatically the best productivity value. |
| Existing AM5 owner | Check game-specific benchmarks before replacing a working processor. The uplift depends on the current CPU and GPU. |
| Extreme overclocking | The 9800X3D is interesting for specialist LN2 experiments, but the risks and equipment requirements are fundamentally different from daily tuning. |
A balanced system generally makes more sense than buying hardware around the LN2 result: a sensibly priced AM5 motherboard, stable DDR5 with an appropriate EXPO profile, conventional high-quality cooling and a GPU matched to the intended resolution. A flagship motherboard, specialist cooling or ultra-high-refresh monitor is not made necessary by this demonstration.
Verdict
The Ryzen 7 9800X3D really did reach approximately 6.9 GHz, but only in an extreme liquid-nitrogen overclocking environment. The best-supported CS2 result is around 1,262.9 FPS, with other reports placing performance around 1,200 FPS or higher. The exact 1,480-FPS claim remains insufficiently verified.
For normal owners, the useful lesson is not to chase 6.9 GHz. It is that the 9800X3D has substantial benchmark headroom and is a strong candidate for CPU-limited, high-refresh gaming when paired with appropriate hardware. Daily PBO, Curve Optimizer, memory tuning and frame-time testing are far more relevant than an LN2 record.
