AMD’s claim is broadly credible for the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, but not for both Ryzen 9 X3D processors equally. Independent testing places the 16-core 9950X3D roughly level with the eight-core Ryzen 7 9800X3D in gaming. The 12-core Ryzen 9 9900X3D is a weaker gaming performer and can trail both chips.
That makes the 9950X3D a compelling gaming-and-workstation processor, while the 9800X3D remains the more rational choice for most gaming-only AM5 builds.

What AMD claimed—and what the evidence supports
AMD has positioned the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D as processors that combine high-end gaming with substantially greater creator and workstation performance than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. AMD’s official material describes the 9950X3D as a flagship gaming processor and publishes performance-lab results based on selected games and test configurations.

The defensible version of the claim is narrower: the 9950X3D can preserve 9800X3D-class gaming performance while adding eight cores. Independent testing does not support extending that conclusion automatically to the 9900X3D.

“Combined cache” does not mean every core accesses every byte with identical latency. The Ryzen 9 models use multiple CPU chiplets, or CCDs, and their cache arrangement and inter-chiplet communication matter to game performance.
Why more cores do not automatically mean more gaming performance
Most games do not scale evenly across 12 or 16 CPU cores. A title may depend heavily on a small number of game threads, with additional cores helping only when the engine, operating system and background workloads can use them.
Rank #2
- AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition
Gaming performance can also depend on:
- Whether the active game threads run on the cache-equipped CCD.
- Cache locality and inter-CCD latency.
- Windows scheduling and AMD chipset-driver behavior.
- The game engine’s thread scaling.
- Whether the graphics card is limiting performance.
The 9800X3D’s simpler eight-core design can therefore compete with, or occasionally outperform, a much larger Ryzen 9 processor in games. Extra cores are considerably more valuable in rendering, encoding, compiling, simulation and other heavily threaded workloads.
What independent gaming tests show
Ryzen 9 9950X3D: effectively tied with the 9800X3D
Tom’s Hardware’s testing placed the 9950X3D within roughly 1% of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D in its gaming aggregate. That is best described as an effective tie, not proof that the processors deliver identical results in every title.
TechSpot’s review likewise found the 9950X3D delivering excellent high-end gaming performance, generally matching or beating competing flagship CPUs.
Individual games can still produce different rankings. Engine design, cache sensitivity, CPU-limited resolution, memory configuration and benchmark selection all influence the result. At 1440p and especially 4K, a GPU bottleneck can compress CPU differences that are visible in 1080p testing.
Ryzen 9 9900X3D: not a 9950X3D substitute
The 9900X3D should be assessed separately. Tom’s Hardware’s review coverage found that it often behaved more like a fast six-core gaming processor and trailed both the 9800X3D and 9950X3D in gaming tests.
Rank #3
- The best for creators meets the best for gamers, can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.7 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 80 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included, liquid cooler recommended
That behavior is consistent with the complications of managing a multi-CCD X3D design, although scheduling results can vary with BIOS versions, chipset drivers, Windows builds and game detection. The important buying conclusion is simpler: the 9900X3D can be competitive, but it is not reliably equivalent to the 9950X3D or 9800X3D in games.
Where the 9950X3D earns its premium
The 9950X3D’s main advantage is not a large increase in average gaming FPS. It is the ability to deliver near-9800X3D gaming performance while providing 16 cores and 32 threads.
Those cores can substantially improve workloads such as:
- CPU-based rendering.
- Video encoding and export.
- Software compilation.
- 3D content creation.
- Streaming alongside demanding applications.
- Heavy multitasking.
MSI cites independent testing in which the 9950X3D delivered up to 90% more performance than the 9800X3D in some heavily multithreaded workloads. That is a workload-specific ceiling, not a universal productivity advantage. MSI’s testing and recommendations should be read with that limitation in mind.
Professional software does not always reward the same processor. Puget Systems’ content-creation testing notes that workflow-specific factors can favor a standard Ryzen 9 9950X, Intel Quick Sync, a discrete GPU or a less expensive X3D chip. Lightroom, Redshift and Quick Sync-dependent workflows are examples where the 9950X3D is not automatically the best choice.

Which processor should you buy?
Choose the Ryzen 7 9800X3D for a gaming-first build
The 9800X3D is the safer recommendation when gaming is the overwhelming priority. It offers top-tier gaming performance, costs less at launch pricing, uses 120W default TDP and avoids paying for cores that may sit idle during play.
It is especially attractive when the price gap to the 9950X3D is large. The money saved can go toward a faster graphics card, more storage or a better monitor—upgrades that may have a greater effect on a gaming system.
Choose the Ryzen 9 9950X3D for gaming plus serious productivity
The 9950X3D makes sense when the same PC is also a workstation. Video editors, 3D artists, developers compiling large projects and users who regularly render or encode while multitasking can benefit from its 16 cores.
It is also the strongest option for buyers who want near-flagship gaming without maintaining separate gaming and productivity systems. The premium is buying substantially more multithreaded capacity, not proportionally more gaming performance.
Buy the Ryzen 9 9900X3D only at the right price
The 9900X3D occupies an awkward middle position. It has 12 cores, which can help in productivity applications, but it can lose to the cheaper 9800X3D in games and remains well behind the 9950X3D in heavily threaded work.

Consider it only if you specifically need more than eight cores, do not need the 9950X3D’s full 16-core performance, and its street price is meaningfully lower than the 9950X3D. If gaming is the main use and the 9900X3D costs more than the 9800X3D, the 9800X3D is generally the better purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.AM5, memory, cooling and setup considerations
All three CPUs require an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. An older AM5 board may need a BIOS update before it supports a Ryzen 9000 X3D chip. BIOS Flashback can be valuable when upgrading without an older compatible processor. Verify CPU support, VRM capability and firmware availability before buying.
AMD lists DDR5-5600 as official memory support. Faster kits such as DDR5-6000 with EXPO are common enthusiast choices, but they are memory overclocks rather than a guaranteed universal limit; stability depends on the kit, motherboard, BIOS and individual memory controller. AMD’s AM5 platform information provides the baseline.

The 9950X3D’s 170W default TDP warrants stronger cooling and case airflow than the 120W 9800X3D or 9900X3D. A capable dual-tower air cooler or quality liquid cooler may be appropriate depending on sustained workload, case clearance, ambient temperature and noise target. Cooler quality should be judged by the complete system rather than brand name alone.
For multi-CCD X3D processors, keep the motherboard BIOS and AMD chipset drivers current. Windows Game Mode, Xbox Game Bar game detection and preferred core-placement behavior can affect scheduling, and software updates can change results. Do not assume every game will receive identical treatment.
How to interpret benchmark claims
When comparing these processors, check the game list, resolution, quality preset, graphics card, driver, memory capacity and timings, BIOS, Windows version, Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory status, background applications, average FPS and 1% lows. Most importantly, determine whether the test was CPU-limited.
AMD’s figures are useful for understanding its product positioning, but they are AMD performance-lab results. Review-site benchmarks are independent test results. Neither should be generalized beyond its test suite and configuration.

- Best gaming value: Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
- Best gaming-plus-productivity flagship: Ryzen 9 9950X3D.
- Conditional middle option: Ryzen 9 9900X3D, only when its price and the buyer’s 12-core workload justify its weaker gaming position.
The headline is therefore half right. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D broadly matches the Ryzen 7 9800X3D in gaming, but the 9900X3D should not inherit that claim. For a gaming-only PC, buy the 9800X3D when it is substantially cheaper. For a hybrid gaming and workstation machine, the 9950X3D is the processor that makes the most convincing case.
