Neither Ryzen nor Intel is automatically better for gaming with an RTX 2080 Ti. The most directly relevant comparisons available here are from 2020: they found small overall average-FPS gaps in some tests, but the result shifted by game, resolution, settings and frame-time metric. Treat those numbers as evidence about the specific CPUs tested—not as a current brand ranking.
What the direct RTX 2080 Ti tests found
Two TechSpot comparisons directly tested Ryzen and Intel processors with an RTX 2080 Ti. Both are useful for understanding how resolution and workload can affect CPU differences, but their CPUs, games and test conditions are from 2020.
Ryzen 7 3700X vs. Core i5-10600K
In a nine-game test published by TechSpot on June 8, 2020, the Core i5-10600K was 2% ahead in average FPS and 10% ahead in average 1% lows with the RTX 2080 Ti. The games were tested at 1080p and 1440p using low or esports settings, making this most relevant to high-refresh, CPU-limited play rather than a broad test of modern games at high graphics settings. Results varied by game: Intel led in some, while Ryzen matched or beat it in others. TechSpot characterized the overall difference as close to zero for most users. Ryzen 9 3950X vs. Core i9-10900K
In a separate TechSpot comparison published August 20, 2020, the Ryzen 9 3950X averaged 5% behind the Core i9-10900K at 1080p with the RTX 2080 Ti. The average gap narrowed to 2% at 1440p, and performance was effectively equal at 4K as the GPU became the limit. Individual games did not all follow the average: the 10900K led by 9% in Death Stranding at 1080p, the processors were equal in DOOM Eternal, and the 10900K’s lead was larger in Horizon Zero Dawn. These are results for those two CPUs and that test suite, not a general prediction for every Ryzen-versus-Intel pairing. Read TechSpot’s comparison.

Will a CPU upgrade improve RTX 2080 Ti gaming performance?
It can, particularly if your current processor is limiting performance in the games and settings you use. But the GPU, resolution, graphics settings and game workload all matter. At lower resolutions and low settings, the graphics card has less work to do per frame, so CPU differences can be easier to expose. At higher resolutions or more demanding graphics settings, the RTX 2080 Ti may become the limiting component, reducing the difference a faster CPU makes.
Average FPS is only part of the experience. The 3700X-versus-10600K test’s larger difference in average 1% lows than in average FPS shows why a high-refresh player may care about consistency as well as peak or average frame rate. A small average-FPS lead does not mean every game feels identical, and a result in one title does not establish the winner in another.

How to choose for your games and setup
Start with the system you have and the games you actually play. Compare processors under conditions close to your own rather than choosing by brand name or relying on a single headline percentage.
- Match resolution and settings. Look for results at your target resolution and graphics settings; low-setting esports results do not predict performance in demanding games played at high settings.
- Check the games that matter to you. The 2020 tests showed that individual titles could depart from the suite average.
- Compare average FPS and 1% lows. Average performance describes throughput over time; 1% lows help show how well the slower moments hold up.
- Consider refresh rate and GPU limits. A high-refresh target in a CPU-limited game may make CPU differences more relevant. At higher resolutions, the GPU may constrain performance instead.
- Include the platform in the decision. Compare the total CPU and platform cost, and check compatibility with your motherboard and memory before planning an upgrade.
What current CPU comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
Current comparisons can provide context about where newer processors sit in gaming today, but they do not answer which current CPU performs best specifically with an RTX 2080 Ti. Likewise, TechSpot’s 2025 Core Ultra 7 265K versus Ryzen 5 7600X scaling test uses newer GPU configurations. It is useful for understanding that CPU margins change with GPU and resolution, but it cannot establish an RTX 2080 Ti result. See TechSpot’s 2025 scaling test.
A current gaming CPU such as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D may be a candidate to investigate, but it was not tested with the RTX 2080 Ti in the comparisons described here. Check independent results for your games and graphics card, along with motherboard, memory, budget and platform compatibility, before buying.
