S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is most compelling when its beauty makes you risk something to see what lies beyond the next ridge. Its bleak, uncanny world rewards slow exploration, but getting there means managing scarce supplies, worn gear, dangerous fights and expeditions that can turn ugly fast. That tension is the point—and also the source of much of its frustration.
This is a platform-qualified review, not a claim of first-hand play: Matt Cabral’s November 21, 2025 TechRadar review is based on nearly 50 hours, primarily on PS5 Pro, with earlier Xbox Series X time. His account finds a more polished PS5 release than the game’s 2024 debut, while still warning that its survival systems and steep difficulty can feel unfair. What kind of game is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2?
GSC Game World describes S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 as a blend of first-person shooter, immersive sim and horror. It takes place in an open-world version of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, where player choices shape the story and a large arsenal can be upgraded and customized. GSC’s 2024 fact sheet lists more than 30 firearm models. GSC’s fact sheet
That combination explains why the game’s strengths and irritations are so closely connected. You are not simply moving from fight to fight: the danger of a trip, your equipment’s condition and what you have left to carry all matter. Survival makes discovery feel earned, but it also gives ordinary setbacks more weight than they would have in a straightforward action shooter.

Why the Zone is worth exploring
Cabral praises the atmosphere and visual presentation, as well as a survival-focused open world that makes exploration rewarding. The Zone’s appeal is not just a scenic backdrop; its strangeness and danger give each excursion a reason to feel uncertain. On PS5, he also singles out DualSense integration as part of the experience. Those are his impressions of the PS5 Pro version, not a guarantee that every platform or setup will feel identical.
The game’s design asks you to weigh curiosity against the cost of pushing farther. Scavenging and trading help keep you equipped, while radiation, anomalies, mutants and rival stalkers make the route itself hazardous. Equipment wears down, and resources are scarce, so surviving an expedition depends on more than winning a gunfight. PlayStation’s product page outlines these systems for the PS5 edition: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 on PlayStation.

Why it can feel like a pain in the ass
The same survival rules that make a successful trip satisfying can make a bad one feel punishing. Cabral identifies strict survival systems and steep difficulty as drawbacks, with some moments feeling unfair. If you want a forgiving shooter that keeps momentum high and lets you recover easily from mistakes, this is a meaningful caveat rather than a minor rough edge.
That friction is not separate from the game’s appeal: danger helps make exploration consequential. But whether the balance works for you depends on how much patience you have for risk, resource management and setbacks. Cabral’s “Beautiful, brutal, and finally bug free” was a characterization of his PS5 review, not a verified promise that the game is free of bugs on all platforms or in every current build.

How the release and platform context affects this review
GSC lists November 20, 2024 as the PC and Xbox Series X/S release date, and says the game was available on Game Pass on day one. The US PlayStation listing gives November 20, 2025 as the PS5 release date. Cabral reports that the PS5 launch benefited from a year of fixes and polish, and that existing versions also received updates. His account therefore reflects later PS5 Pro play and earlier Xbox Series X experience—not a controlled, current comparison of every platform. Xbox listing · US PlayStation listing
There is no like-for-like benchmark in the cited material for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PS5 Pro. Treat the review’s platform impressions as attributed experience, not as a basis for declaring one version technically superior. The PS5 store currently lists Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate editions, and shows Cost of Hope as an add-on included with Ultimate; storefront contents and availability can change by region and date, so check the live listing before choosing an edition.

GSC’s system-requirements guide, published February 4, 2025, lists the following targets. They are publisher specifications, not a guarantee of the same performance on every system or later game build. All tiers call for 160 GB on an SSD. GSC says low and medium targets were evaluated using TSR and comparable technologies; high targets using TSR, DLSS, FSR and XeSS. Check GSC’s live requirements guide for any updates before installing.
| Publisher tier | Resolution and target | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 1080p, target 30 FPS | Ryzen 5 1600X or Core i7-7700K | 16 GB RAM | RX 580 8 GB, GTX 1060 6 GB or Intel Arc A750 | 160 GB SSD |
| Medium | 1080p, target 60 FPS | Ryzen 7 3700X or Core i7-9700K | 16 GB RAM; 32 GB recommended for additional headroom | RX 5700 XT, RTX 2070 SUPER or RTX 4060 | 160 GB SSD |
| High (recommended) | 1440p, target 60 FPS | Ryzen 7 3700X or Core i7-9700K | 32 GB RAM | RX 6800 XT, RTX 3070 Ti or RTX 4070 | 160 GB SSD |
| Epic | 2160p, target 60+ FPS | Ryzen 7 7700X or Core i7-13700KF | 32 GB RAM | RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX | 160 GB SSD |
Use these as a starting point for checking your own hardware, not as a prediction drawn from a console review. The cited guide gives target tiers but does not establish how a specific PC configuration will perform.
Who should play it?
- Consider it if atmospheric exploration, survival pressure and an open world that makes each expedition feel risky are what you want from a shooter.
- Think carefully if you prefer generous supplies, low-friction survival systems or difficulty that rarely makes a setback sting.
- On PC, check first that your processor, graphics card, memory and SSD space line up with a publisher target tier; a console impression cannot answer that for your setup.
- Before buying an edition confirm the current regional storefront listing, especially if you are choosing based on Cost of Hope or other bundled content.
Verdict
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 earns its appeal by making the Zone feel beautiful, hostile and worth exploring, then asking you to pay attention to the cost of being there. That makes it a distinctive survival shooter, but not an easygoing one. Cabral’s PS5 Pro review suggests a better-polished later release than the 2024 launch while underscoring that the punishing systems remain part of the bargain. If that kind of friction sounds like tension rather than busywork, the game’s harshness may be exactly what makes its discoveries land.
