That was a pregame expectation, not confirmation that he appeared: the available reports were published before puck drop.
What is confirmed about Zellweger’s return?
The Sabres’ Oct. 2 practice report described Zellweger as a full participant, and coach Lindy Ruff said, “We anticipate getting him in the lineup.” Zellweger said the extra days after missing the season opener had made a “massive difference.” The team therefore expected him to play against Chicago, but the reports do not establish whether he ultimately took the ice.
These are separate milestones: full participation at practice was confirmed, the team’s intention to use him was reported, and his game appearance remained unresolved in the pregame coverage. The Sabres also said a roster spot opened when Dennis Gilbert returned to Rochester, clearing a path for Zellweger to come off injured reserve. However, the transaction log reviewed for this update showed his Oct. 1 placement on injured reserve, not a subsequent activation.
Why was Zellweger out?
Zellweger was injured during Buffalo’s Sept. 22 preseason game against Columbus. Late in the second period, Blue Jackets defenseman Carson Soucy hit him; Zellweger did not return, and Ruff said he had entered concussion protocol. The Sabres’ Sept. 23 game report recorded the protocol entry but gave no return timetable.

Before the injury ended his night, Zellweger had played 13:37. On the hit, he later said: “I don’t think it was a crazy dirty hit, but I don’t think it was perfectly clean, either. It’s just one of those things where you’ve got to put yourself in a better position.”
Return timeline
- Sept. 22: Injured late in the second period of the preseason game against Columbus, did not return, and entered concussion protocol.
- Sept. 23: The team’s game report documented the incident and protocol entry without a timetable.

How might he fit into Buffalo’s defense?
Zellweger practiced alongside Owen Power, as he had early in training camp. That pairing was a possibility, not a confirmed game assignment: Ruff had not decided how to manage the defensive pairs during games. The team report lists Zellweger at 5-foot-10 and 193 pounds.
