The six numbered Sakura Wars games are best approached in release order: Sakura Wars (1996), Sakura Wars 2 (1998), Sakura Wars 3 (2001), Sakura Wars 4 (2002), Sakura Wars V (2005), and Shin Sakura Wars (2019 in Japan; released in the West in 2020). That is the official numbered-game sequence—not a verified, complete in-universe chronology. If you want to follow the series from its beginning, play them in that order; if you cannot access the older games, SEGA framed the modern game as a new narrative for newcomers and longtime fans alike.
Sakura Wars games in numbered release order
SEGA’s official history identifies six numbered titles. The original release years below refer to each game’s initial release, not later ports or Western launch dates.
| Order | Game | Original release |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sakura Wars | September 27, 1996, for Sega Saturn |
| 2 | Sakura Wars 2: Thou Shalt Not Die | April 4, 1998, for Sega Saturn |
| 3 | Sakura Wars 3: Is Paris Burning? | 2001 |
| 4 | Sakura Wars 4: Fall in Love, Maidens | March 21, 2002, for Dreamcast |
| 5 | Sakura Wars V: Farewell, My Love / So Long, My Love | 2005 |
| 6 | Shin Sakura Wars / Sakura Wars | December 12, 2019, for PS4 in Japan; April 28, 2020, for PS4 in the West |
These release details come from SEGA’s official Sakura Wars history, the SEGA of America Western release announcement, and SEGA’s announcement of the Japanese release. English titles vary by region and edition: the fifth numbered game is known as Sakura Wars V and So Long, My Love in English-language contexts, while the 2019 game is called Shin Sakura Wars in Japan and simply Sakura Wars in the West.
What order should you play the Sakura Wars games in?
For the series from the beginning
Play the six numbered games in the table’s release order. This is the most reliable complete sequence supported by SEGA’s official numbered-title history, and it avoids treating a suggested story timeline as established fact.

If you want to start with the modern game
Shin Sakura Wars, released in the West as Sakura Wars, is a reasonable starting point if the older entries are inaccessible. In its February 13, 2020 announcement, SEGA of America described it as “an all-new narrative designed to be enjoyed by both parties,” referring to newcomers and longtime fans. That is SEGA’s characterization of the game’s accessibility, not a guarantee that it contains no references to earlier titles.
Is there a definitive Sakura Wars story chronology?
The official sources establish the numbered release sequence, but they do not provide a complete in-universe date order for every game. In particular, they do not verify the exact story placement of Sakura Wars V and Shin Sakura Wars relative to the earlier entries. So “release order” and “story chronology” should not be used interchangeably: the former is documented; a definitive full timeline is not established by these sources.

Which games are outside the numbered sequence?
The six games above are the numbered-title roster, not every game or related work in the franchise. SEGA’s history also lists titles such as Sakura Wars: Mysterious Paris, Sakura Wars V Episode 0, and Dramatic Dungeon Sakura Wars: Because You Are There. Treat these as related games or spin-offs rather than inserting them into the six-game numbered order. Ports likewise do not create additional numbered entries; for example, SEGA’s history records a PC edition of Sakura Wars 3 on September 18, 2003, after its original 2001 release.

Choosing a starting point by access and scope
- Want the documented numbered sequence? Begin with the 1996 Sakura Wars and proceed in release order.
- Only looking for the modern localized entry? The Western PS4 release of Sakura Wars arrived on April 28, 2020. Check the specific edition and region before buying; one modern game is not the full classic sequence.
- Interested in the broader franchise? Explore spin-offs separately, keeping their status distinct from the six numbered titles.
