Yes—historically, Fortnite gained an Epic-graphics/60-FPS mode on the Galaxy S20 family in late April 2020. That meant the option could be enabled on supported S20-series phones; it did not promise a locked 60 frames per second throughout a match. Heat, throttling, chipset, software version, rendering resolution and scene complexity could all produce drops, especially during long sessions.
What the Fortnite update changed
Early Galaxy S20 testing found Fortnite limited to 30 FPS, with the High and Epic graphics presets unavailable. A later Fortnite device-profile and optimization update exposed higher graphics quality and a 60-FPS limit for the S20 family. Contemporary community evidence places the rollout around April 29, 2020, although an original Epic announcement confirming that exact date is not available.
This was primarily a Fortnite/Epic support change. Samsung’s hardware made the mode possible, but the phone’s 120-Hz display did not cause Fortnite to run at 120 FPS. The relevant Fortnite option was 60 FPS.

The early limitation is documented in a contemporary Galaxy S20 review at Frandroid. An Exynos Galaxy S20 demonstration running Android 10 showed the Epic/60-FPS combination in practice at ITJungles.

Which Galaxy S20 phones are covered?
The original family consists of the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra. Epic’s current Android compatibility material lists Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20 Ultra among devices capable of running the current Fortnite version natively at 60 FPS; localized versions of the list can present the models differently. That current listing establishes 60-FPS compatibility, not that every model still offers the 2020 Epic-preset combination.

Regional hardware also matters. Snapdragon 865 S20 variants were common in the United States and some other markets, while many international models used Samsung’s Exynos 990. Both could expose the relevant settings, but available reports do not establish that one chipset always delivers the same sustained result as the other.
How to turn on Epic graphics and 60 FPS
Fortnite labels have changed between releases, so the wording on your phone may differ slightly. The historical path is:

- Update Fortnite through the currently supported official distribution route.
- Launch Fortnite and open the main menu.
- Select Settings, then open the Video tab.
- Set Quality Presets or Graphics Quality to Epic, if the preset is offered.
- Set Frame Rate Limit to 60 FPS.
- Apply the changes. Restart Fortnite if the new option does not appear immediately.
Epic documents frame-rate controls in Fortnite’s Video settings at its Samsung frame-rate guidance. On Samsung phones that expose higher-refresh-rate controls, Epic says to use Settings → Display → Motion smoothness → Adaptive; Standard motion smoothness can limit the phone to 60 Hz and hide higher frame-rate choices. That instruction does not prove that the S20 supports Fortnite at 90 or 120 FPS.
Does Epic plus 60 FPS mean a stable 60?
No. A 60-FPS menu entry is a capability or cap, not a guarantee of frame-time consistency. Rendering at 60 FPS requires roughly 16.7 milliseconds per frame. An S20 may meet that target when cool and then slow down as its system-on-chip and battery heat up.
Contemporary reports include phones that started near 60 FPS and later dropped substantially during extended play. Reports on 4PDA and Reddit describe heat-related degradation, while other Snapdragon users found the mode more satisfactory. These are user observations rather than controlled laboratory comparisons: 4PDA and Reddit.

For a meaningful check, monitor more than a lobby or short video clip:
- Observe the lobby and pre-match area.
- Land in a busy location where many players and structures are visible.
- Test building, combat and rapid camera movement.
- Play for 10–20 minutes, including the end of a match after the phone has warmed up.
- Note frame pacing, touch response, battery drain and temperature, not only the highest number shown by an overlay.
Network lag can make a match feel uneven, but it is separate from the phone’s rendering frame rate. Charging while playing, a thick case, background apps and an aging battery can all worsen thermal behavior.
What “Epic graphics” means on mobile
Fortnite’s mobile Epic preset is the highest mobile quality tier available to that device and game build. It is not equivalent to Fortnite on a PC running the Epic preset. Mobile rendering resolution, textures, effects and other quality targets are tuned separately. A user discussion makes this distinction at Reddit.

Choosing a practical settings combination

If Epic causes repeated drops, reducing 3D resolution or moving to High at 60 FPS is generally more useful than insisting on the highest preset. A steady lower workload can feel better than an unstable nominal maximum.

Epic’s current Android article lists the Galaxy S20 as a device that can run the current Fortnite version natively, without cloud streaming, at 60 FPS: Epic’s compatibility list. Epic also warns that satisfying minimum requirements does not guarantee the highest graphics settings: Android system requirements.

Therefore, the 2020 claim remains historically valid, while its present-day wording needs care. Current 60-FPS compatibility does not by itself confirm that every S20, regional variant or current game build still combines 60 FPS with Epic graphics. Check the actual Video menu on the specific phone.

Fortnite can be installed through supported Samsung distribution options described at Fortnite on Samsung. That page also distinguishes native installation from cloud services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna. Cloud play is not evidence that the phone itself renders Epic graphics at 60 FPS.
If Epic or 60 FPS is missing
- Verify that the phone is a Galaxy S20, S20+ or S20 Ultra rather than an S20 FE or another similarly named model.
- Install the newest Fortnite build available through an official supported route.
- Restart Fortnite after changing graphics settings, and reboot the phone if necessary.
- Disable power-saving modes and close demanding background applications.
- Set Samsung’s Motion smoothness to Adaptive where that control is available.
- Let the phone cool, remove a thick case for testing and avoid charging during the test.
- Lower 3D resolution or graphics quality if the option appears but performance falls after several minutes.
- Do not treat unofficial configuration-file edits as equivalent to Epic-supported settings.

Should you buy a used Galaxy S20 for Fortnite?
An S20 can be an inexpensive secondary Fortnite phone, but the 60-FPS toggle should not be the buying decision by itself. The S20 generation is discontinued, and a used example may have degraded battery health, regional chipset differences, carrier restrictions or limited future software support.
- Confirm the exact model and market variant.
- Check battery condition and whether the phone overheats during a sustained game.
- Test the current Fortnite build on the actual handset before relying on Epic graphics.
- Prefer sustained frame pacing over a short demonstration or menu option.
A clip-on active cooler may reduce heat during long sessions, but it cannot turn an unsupported profile into an officially supported one. A controller can improve comfort without improving rendering performance.
