Samsung’s OLED Glare Free technology is a physical low-reflection coating, not a new 2026 software feature. It first appeared on the 2024 Odyssey OLED generation and now spans models including the 2025 500Hz Odyssey OLED G6 G60SF and 2026 Odyssey OLED G8 G80SH. The coating can make OLED gaming easier in bright or mixed-light rooms, but glossy OLED screens can still look more vivid in controlled darkness.
What Samsung OLED Glare Free actually is
Glare Free is an optical treatment applied to the monitor panel. Samsung describes a specialized hard-coating layer and a surface-coating pattern intended to reduce reflections while retaining OLED color and sharpness. It is not an operating-system setting, brightness algorithm, gaming mode or burn-in safeguard. Samsung introduced the technology with its 2024 Odyssey OLED lineup: Samsung’s 2024 announcement.

In practical terms, the coating diffuses or suppresses reflections from windows, lamps and ceiling lights. That is different from increasing panel brightness, changing HDR behavior or altering the OLED pixels themselves. “Matte,” “anti-reflective” and “low-reflection” describe related approaches, but the visual result depends on the particular coating and panel.

Which Odyssey OLED monitors have Glare Free?
Do not assume that every monitor called G6, G8 or G9 uses the same surface. Check the complete regional model number and suffix. Samsung’s 2024 lineup announcement identified G60SD, G80SD, G85SD, G93SD and G95SD models with OLED Glare Free, while later generations added further models.

What Glare Free improves in real rooms
The strongest benefit appears when ambient light cannot be controlled: a window beside the desk, a ceiling fixture, a desk lamp or daytime gaming in a shared room. Reflected objects become less mirror-like, so dark scenes compete less with the room around you. Independent testing found the G80SD’s matte coating reduces glare effectively in bright conditions. RTINGS and TFTCentral both describe the G80SD as using a custom matte treatment over a QD-OLED panel.
Samsung says the G85SD is 54% less glossy than its conventional anti-reflection film. That is Samsung’s internal comparison for that product, not an industry-wide anti-glare rating. Samsung’s product page provides the claim.
What it cannot fix
- It does not raise the OLED panel’s native brightness or guarantee stronger HDR in daylight.
- It does not eliminate every reflection, especially when a bright source points directly at the screen.
- It does not prevent burn-in or provide special image-retention coverage.
- It does not remove QD-OLED behavior such as a purple or magenta cast in black areas under strong ambient light; it may simply make that effect less conspicuous. RTINGS documents this behavior.
- It does not change refresh rate, response time, adaptive-sync operation, HDR certification, pixel layout or frame rate.
- A 500Hz monitor still needs a game, GPU and settings capable of producing extremely high frame rates.
Matte Glare Free versus glossy OLED

TechRadar’s G60SF testing noted the bright-room advantage but a possible reduction in perceived contrast compared with glossy OLED. Some matte surfaces can also show grain or haze on white desktop backgrounds. TFTCentral found the G80SD’s treatment relatively restrained, but text clarity still depends on the OLED subpixel layout, operating-system scaling and viewing distance.
Glare Free is separate from other OLED features
- Brightness and HDR: coating control is not peak-luminance performance. The G80SD specification sheet lists 250 cd/m² typical brightness, while HDR peak output varies by test window, mode, firmware and content. Specification sheet.
- Burn-in protection: check the country-specific warranty, exclusions and replacement terms separately.
- Gaming speed: Samsung lists the G60SF at 500Hz and 0.03ms; system latency also depends on the GPU, game engine, settings and signal path. Samsung’s announcement.
- Smart features: Gaming Hub and streaming functions on supported models do not come from the coating.
Who should choose a Glare Free Odyssey OLED?
Bright or mixed-light room
Choose it when windows, overhead lights or shared-room lighting are unavoidable. It is a meaningful usability advantage, although moving the monitor, changing a lamp or adding curtains may solve the source of glare more cheaply.

Dark-room gaming
Compare the surface against a glossy OLED before buying. Glossy models are often preferred for maximum perceived contrast, clarity and cinematic impact when the room is controlled.
Gaming plus office work
Glare reduction can make daytime desktop use more comfortable, but inspect text at your intended scaling during the return period. The coating cannot remove OLED subpixel fringing.
Esports
Choose resolution, refresh rate, GPU capability and latency characteristics first. Glare Free helps visibility; it does not make a game run at 500 frames per second.

How to compare before you buy
- Confirm the exact model number and country-specific suffix.
- Choose resolution, size and aspect ratio before judging the coating.
- Match refresh rate to the frame rates your GPU and games can actually deliver.
- Check DisplayPort, HDMI, adaptive-sync and HDR requirements.
- Identify the OLED panel type and assess text rendering for your work.
- Read the local burn-in warranty and exclusions; Glare Free provides no implied coverage.
- Compare the current price, return window and stock for the exact SKU.
- If possible, view a matte and glossy OLED side by side under both your daytime and nighttime lighting.
Is Samsung’s Glare Free technology new?
No. Samsung introduced it in 2024, expanded it to models such as the 2025 G60SF, and continues it on newer products including the 2026 G80SH. “Expands” or “continues” is therefore more accurate than calling Glare Free a brand-new 2026 invention.
