Identify the revision first: iFixit advises removing the capacitor on revisions 1.0–1.5, while revision 1.6 needs a working clock capacitor to start. Late boards are not automatically immune; reports of leakage exist for revisions 1.6 and 1.6b.
Why the clock capacitor can damage an original Xbox
The clock capacitor helps the console retain time while it is unplugged. If it leaks, electrolyte can corrode the motherboard and nearby traces over time. The risk is a reason to inspect and identify the board—not proof that every original Xbox is already damaged or will fail on a known schedule.
iFixit’s guidance covers the revision-specific boot difference and the reported leakage risk on late boards in its clock-capacitor article. ConsoleMods also describes how leakage can damage traces over time in its Xbox clock-capacitor guide.
Identify the motherboard revision before choosing a fix
Do not decide based only on the console’s exterior or age. Find the motherboard revision first. iFixit notes that the manufacture-date, serial-number, and product-number sticker is on the bottom of the console; its Original Xbox device page is a general identification and repair resource, not a clock-capacitor diagnosis.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatibility: These capacitors are compatible with Xbox versions 1.2 to 1.6.
- Product Usage: 10V 3300uf capacitors are used to fix the machine no power problem, while 2.5v 1F Super Capacitors, can fix the no time problem.
- Capacitors are 3300uv and 10v. I found that when using 6.3 volts, the initial surge will swell the 6.3v capacitors, so I now use 10v to help take the initial load in all repairs.
- Note: Removing and replacing capacitors requires some soldering skills.
- Product List: Product include a total of 5pcs 10V 3300uf Capacitors, 1Pc 2.5V 1F Super Capacitor, which can completely meet your daily use needs and replacement.
| Motherboard revision | Clock-capacitor guidance | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0–1.5 | iFixit describes removal as the easiest solution, including before visible leakage begins. | Once removed, the console will not retain time while unplugged and may need the clock set each session. |
| 1.6 | iFixit says the console will refuse to start without a working clock capacitor; do not simply remove it. | If service is needed, replace it with a suitable working part and check revision-specific repair guidance. |
| 1.6b | iFixit notes reports of leakage on 1.6/1.6b boards. | This is a reported risk, not a claim that all 1.6b boards leak. Inspect the board. |
Inspect the capacitor area and nearby traces
Look around the clock capacitor for residue, corrosion, or signs that damage has reached nearby traces. A clean-looking component does not rule out hidden corrosion or other faults, so treat visual inspection as a check—not a guarantee of board health. If traces are damaged, the job may require board repair beyond removing a capacitor; consider an experienced console repairer if you lack the skills or equipment.
Other capacitors can also fail as the motherboard ages. Removing or replacing the clock capacitor addresses that component’s risk; it does not certify the rest of the board.

- Designed specifically for the original XB console revisions 1.0-1.5
- Maintenance free and long-lasting - designed for durability with millions of cycles, reducing the need for frequent replacement and ensuring long-term stable performance.
- Supercapacitors Technology - Utilizing advanced supercapacitor (supercapacitor) technology, it has a longer lifespan compared to traditional electrolytic capacitors.
Choose removal or replacement based on the board and your priorities
- For revisions 1.0–1.5: removal is the commonly advised preventive fix. Accept that the console will lose time while unplugged.
- For revision 1.6: retain a working clock capacitor because the console requires one to start. If replacement is necessary, confirm the part and procedure against a guide for that board revision.
- For revisions 1.6/1.6b with no visible damage: inspect rather than assuming either that leakage is inevitable or that the board is safe.
- If corrosion or trace damage is present: factor the board repair into the decision; simple removal alone may not restore damaged connections.
Your choice also depends on whether preserving unplugged time matters, whether there is visible corrosion, and whether you can safely perform revision-specific board work.

iFixit lists precision screwdriver bits, screwdriver kits, and an opening tool among the tools related to Original Xbox repairs. A Torx security screwdriver set is a possible tool category, not a guaranteed match for every fastener: confirm the exact bit sizes and fasteners before starting. Having the tools does not replace a revision-specific procedure or make motherboard work risk-free.
