scansetting.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows scanning component, not a Visual C++ runtime or ordinary third-party application file. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, repair Windows and the affected scanner software instead of downloading a loose copy of the DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order to narrow down the problem:
- The error appears in Windows Scan or multiple scanner applications: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- It appears only in one scanner manufacturer’s utility: repair or reinstall that utility and its scanner driver.
- Windows Security recently quarantined the file: inspect Protection History before restoring anything.
- It started immediately after an update, driver installation, or cleanup operation: try System Restore.
- The DLL exists but Windows still reports “specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing, or the application may have an architecture mismatch.
- The message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows”: treat the file as damaged, incompatible, or tampered with. Do not replace it with a random download.
What scansetting.dll does
The recorded description for scansetting.dll is “Microsoft Windows(TM) ScanSettings Profile and Scanning implementation.” It belongs to Windows Image Acquisition, usually called WIA.
WIA supplies the Windows APIs and driver framework that scanners and imaging applications use. Scan profiles store settings for scanners and cameras, allowing software to request particular scanning behavior. Microsoft documents this architecture in its Windows Image Acquisition documentation and scan profile documentation.

This means the DLL can be involved when a scanner application starts, even though the application itself may have been installed by Epson, Canon, Brother, HP, or another vendor. The exact program that triggered the error cannot be identified from the filename alone.
Normal file locations
On 64-bit Windows, the native system copy is normally under:
C:WindowsSystem32scansetting.dll
A 32-bit copy may be under:
C:WindowsSysWOW64scansetting.dll
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. A 32-bit scanner application may need the 32-bit copy even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Do not copy a DLL from one folder to the other. A 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit DLL, and replacing a valid system file with a different build can create another loading failure.

This is the safest first repair when the error affects Windows scanning or more than one application. A failed update, disk problem, cleanup utility, malware, or incomplete system repair can damage Windows components.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the scanner again.
Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions cover the same process.

Run DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and replace protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Open the scanner application and test a scan.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions and Windows image repair guidance.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If you prefer not to spend time hunting through component repair output and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows findings, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate built-in repair.
Understand the SFC result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means protected files passed the check. Continue with the scanner-driver steps if the error remains.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means SFC replaced damaged files. Restart and test.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means the repair is incomplete. Restart, run DISM again, and run
sfc /scannowa second time. - If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not copy
scansetting.dllfrom another computer. Use a repair source matching the installed Windows version, following Microsoft’s DISM repair-source guidance.
Fix 2: Repair the scanner application and WIA driver
If the error appears only when launching a vendor’s scanner utility, Windows may be healthy while that utility or its driver is damaged.
Repair the application
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the scanner utility.
- Select its More button or open its entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you are prepared to lose that application’s saved settings.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the utility and reinstall it from the scanner manufacturer’s official support page.
The definitive fix for a damaged vendor utility is its official installer, not a replacement Windows DLL.
Reinstall or update the scanner driver
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers, depending on how Windows lists the hardware.
- Right-click the scanner.
- Select Update driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If the problem continues, right-click the scanner again and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect or power on the scanner.
- Install the current driver and scanning utility supplied by the scanner manufacturer.
- Confirm that the download matches your Windows edition and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
Microsoft provides Device Manager driver guidance.
Manually identifying the correct scanner driver among several old packages can be tedious, especially after removing a partially installed driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can show driver findings and handle driver installation through its full version, but it is optional; use the scanner manufacturer’s official driver when you know the exact model.
Check the Windows scanning service
A stopped WIA service can cause scanner applications to fail, although it does not by itself prove that scansetting.dll is missing.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or Automatic (Delayed Start) if available.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the scanner application.
If WIA will not start, return to DISM and SFC rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a false detection or after detecting tampering.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
scansetting.dll. - Do not restore it automatically.
- Check whether the file is in a Windows system directory and digitally signed by Microsoft.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
- Restore the file only when you have confirmed it is a genuine Microsoft file and the detection is a false positive.
Microsoft explains this process in Protection History. Never restore a DLL obtained from an unofficial download source.

Fix 4: Check architecture and missing dependencies
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that scansetting.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL or by the scanner application.
Check the following:
- A 32-bit scanner utility should use compatible 32-bit components.
- A 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
- The application may be pointing to an obsolete driver installation.
- A file present in
System32may not satisfy a 32-bit program that needs theSysWOW64copy. - A failed driver uninstall may leave broken references or dependencies.
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable packages, DirectX runtimes, or the .NET Desktop Runtime as a first response. Those packages repair their own components and are not identified as the source of this Windows scanning DLL.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Public export information for scansetting.dll does not show that entry point, so registration is likely to produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found. Microsoft documents the command in its Regsvr32 reference.

Fix 5: Roll back a recent system change
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or other system change, System Restore may be appropriate.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs, while leaving personal files unaffected. It does not help if no suitable restore point exists. See Microsoft’s System Restore guidance.
Fix 6: Repair Windows without deleting personal files
For persistent Windows corruption, Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported. If the option is unavailable or fails, back up your files and consider installation media or Reset this PC. Microsoft lists the available choices in its Windows recovery options.
Should you download scansetting.dll manually
No. There is no verified Microsoft standalone download package for scansetting.dll.
Random DLL download pages can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the component store. Copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64 can also hide the real issue, such as a damaged dependency or scanner driver.

FAQ
Is scansetting.dll part of Windows or my scanner?
It is a Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with WIA. A scanner application may call it, which can make the error look like an application-specific problem.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does a game or unrelated program mention it?
The filename alone does not identify the cause. The program may be using Windows imaging components, or the error may actually be coming from another process launched at the same time. Check the full message and the application name before reinstalling anything.
Can I delete the existing file and replace it?
No. Do not delete it. Run DISM and SFC, then repair the scanner software if necessary.
What if the file exists but the error continues?
Inspect the application’s architecture, reinstall its driver, and consider that “specified module could not be found” may refer to a dependency. The presence of the named DLL does not prove that every required component is healthy.
What information matters when asking for further help?
Record the exact error text, the application that displays it, your Windows version, whether the scanner works in another application, whether the file exists in the expected system directory, and whether the problem began after an update or driver change.
