scanusd.dll is an old third-party USB scanner minidriver, not a normal Windows system file. If Windows says it is missing, corrupted, or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is to restore the scanner’s complete driver and software package rather than copying a DLL into System32.
What scanusd.dll does
The file is described as USB User Mode Minidriver and is associated with SCANUSD USB MiniDriver. It is a 32-bit component found in older scanner packages, especially MiraScan software and related Acer, BenQ, and other OEM scanner packages.
Microsoft explains that Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, uses vendor-supplied user-mode minidrivers to communicate with scanners. The scanner package normally includes more than one file: an INF installer file, WIA registration, companion DLLs, USB components, and settings specific to the scanner model.
The label Color Flatbed Scanner may appear as publisher or product metadata, but it does not identify a clearly documented current manufacturer. The filename alone cannot identify the exact scanner model.

scanusd.dll should not normally be in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
A valid copy is more likely to be in the scanner application’s installation directory or a driver subfolder such as minidrv or STI.
Before fixing the error
Write down the complete error and the program that displays it. Common variations include:
- “This application failed to start because scanusd.dll was not found.”
- “The file scanusd.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading scanusd.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because scanusd.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load scanusd.dll.”
The message may appear when opening:
- A scanner utility
- A WIA client
- An OCR application
- An older imaging program
- Software that was installed with the scanner
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that scanusd.dll itself is absent. It can also mean that a companion DLL or other dependency cannot be loaded.

1. Identify the hardware
- Turn off or disconnect the scanner.
- Look for a model name on the scanner lid, underside, rear label, or USB housing.
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Note any scanner entry that matches the affected device.
You can also check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the scanner model, an unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click a relevant entry and select Properties.
- Read the model on the General tab and inspect Details for hardware identifiers.
Do not guess the driver from the filename. An Acer ScanPrisa scanner, BenQ S2W scanner, and another OEM model may have used related MiraScan files while still requiring different device settings.
2. Remove the damaged package
If the scanner software is listed:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for the scanner manufacturer, MiraScan, ScanPrisa, scanner utility, or OCR software.
- Select the program’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
If there is no matching entry, remove only the scanner device from Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the scanner entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are certain the entry belongs to the old scanner.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart the computer.
Do not remove unrelated USB controllers or imaging devices.
3. Install the original driver
Use, in this order:
- The installation CD or DVD supplied with the scanner.
- A backup of the scanner’s original installer.
- The scanner manufacturer’s support page for the exact model.
- A trustworthy archived OEM package when the manufacturer no longer hosts the software.
Install the full package, not a file named only scanusd.dll. If the installer offers a choice between TWAIN, WIA, OCR, or scanner utility components, install the components required by the application that produced the error.
If the installer is very old:
- Right-click its setup file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try the Windows version recommended by the scanner manufacturer, if documented.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then run the installer.
Restart Windows after installation. Connect the scanner only when the installer requests it, unless its instructions say otherwise.

4. Test the installation
- Connect and power on the scanner.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Confirm that the scanner appears.
- Open the scanner’s utility or the application that previously failed.
- Start a preview or test scan.
If the application opens and the scanner completes a preview, the missing-file problem is repaired. If scanusd.dll still appears in the error, the package may be for the wrong model, incomplete, or incompatible with the current Windows version.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A security product may have removed the DLL after a scanner package was installed or restored from backup. Do not disable antivirus protection to force the program to run.

Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries around the time the scanner stopped working.
- Expand a detection to see the original file path and detection name.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file came from the scanner’s original installer or a trusted OEM backup.
- The path belongs to the scanner software.
- The scanner model matches the installed package.
- The file has no unexplained name or location.
If the file came from a random DLL download page, do not restore it. Obtain a clean copy by reinstalling the complete scanner package.
Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored quarantined file again. If that happens, stop the scanner program and investigate the installer, file signature, and detection rather than repeatedly restoring the file.
After restoring a trusted file, reinstall the entire scanner package anyway. Quarantine may have removed companion files or damaged the package’s registration.
Fix 3: Verify the file’s location, metadata, and signature
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
If the file exists, determine whether it belongs to the scanner installation.
Find the file
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
scanusd.dll. - Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click each result and select Open file location.
Prefer a copy inside the scanner’s application or driver directory. Treat a copy in a temporary folder, Downloads, an email attachment directory, or an unexpected system folder as untrusted until verified.
Check its properties
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check File description, Product name, and Copyright.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
The historical metadata associated with this file is not universal. A public catalogued copy lists an old version, size, and copyright, but those details do not prove that every scanner package contains the same build. Do not reject a legitimate OEM file solely because its version differs from a catalogued copy.

If several copies exist, do not copy one over another. Different scanner packages may depend on different companion files.

Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If the error names a specific scanner utility, OCR program, or imaging application, repair that application before changing Windows system files.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the named program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that application settings may be removed.
For older desktop software without Repair or Reset:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Select the scanner application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall.
- Run the repair option if offered.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the complete OEM package.
If the named program is not scanner-related, reinstall that program from its original source. A game or unrelated application should not be repaired with a scanner DLL.
Fix 5: Confirm 32-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The known scanusd.dll component is 32-bit. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit scanner application, but that application still needs its 32-bit DLL and dependencies in the correct driver or application directory.
Do not attempt to solve this by placing the file in both system folders. System32 is not a general-purpose location for third-party DLLs, and copying files between System32 and SysWOW64 can create version conflicts.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
To check whether the application is 32-bit:
- Start the affected application.
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. - Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, when available.
The more useful test is whether the exact scanner package supports the Windows version installed. A 32-bit legacy driver may still fail because its installer, USB component, or WIA registration is incompatible with Windows 11.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a default repair
Time needed: 2 minutes to verify
Do not blindly run:
regsvr32 scanusd.dll
regsvr32 is appropriate only for a DLL that provides the registration entry point required by that command, especially DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents the command’s requirements and syntax.
A WIA minidriver is normally installed through the scanner package’s INF file and WIA registration. Copying the DLL somewhere and registering it manually does not recreate the device configuration, USB driver, companion files, or scanner-specific settings.

Use regsvr32 only when the scanner manufacturer’s documented installer instructions explicitly require it and identify the correct file path. If the command reports that the entry point is missing, that does not necessarily mean the DLL is damaged. It may simply not be a self-registering DLL.
Fix 7: Install Windows updates and repair Windows components
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They generally will not recreate scanusd.dll, because this is a vendor scanner file rather than a standard Windows component.
First install pending updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the scanner again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands complete without errors but scanusd.dll is still missing, return to the scanner package repair. Repeating SFC will not install a third-party minidriver.

Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use System Restore when the error began immediately after uninstalling scanner software, restoring a backup, cleaning startup items, installing a driver, or applying another system change.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can remove applications or drivers installed after the selected restore point. It does not replace personal documents, but you should still save open work before proceeding.
If Windows will not start normally, open the Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore.
After the restore, test the scanner. If it works, avoid immediately running the same cleanup or driver-removal utility that caused the problem.

A missing Windows feature is not the usual cause of scanusd.dll errors, and enabling random features will not replace the scanner minidriver. However, an old scanner application may separately require a legacy framework.
To inspect optional features:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Review installed features.
- Use View features only when the scanner application’s documentation names a required feature.
Do not install DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ merely because scanusd.dll is missing. There is no evidence that this DLL is a Visual C++ runtime file.

If the repaired scanner application separately reports a missing Visual C++ runtime, use Microsoft’s official latest supported Visual C++ Redistributables. A 32-bit application requires the x86 redistributable even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Why the error appears
The most common causes are:

An error saying “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate a damaged file, wrong architecture, incomplete installation, or an incompatible legacy driver. It is not proof that downloading a different copy of the DLL will help.
What not to do
Do not:
- Download
scanusd.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Copy the file into
System32orSysWOW64. - Mix files from different Acer, BenQ, MiraScan, or scanner models.
- Disable antivirus globally.
- Run
regsvr32without confirming that the DLL is designed for manual registration. - Install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as a guess.
- Assume the metadata label identifies a current scanner manufacturer.
- Restore a quarantined file without checking its path and source.
A standalone DLL can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be incompatible with the calling application, or omit the INF and companion files required by the scanner. The safe sources are the scanner’s original media, a manufacturer-provided package for the exact model, or a trustworthy OEM archive.
If the scanner still does not work
Use this checklist:
- Confirm the exact scanner model.
- Confirm which application displays the error.
- Search for every copy of
scanusd.dll. - Check that the trusted copy is in the scanner application or driver directory.
- Inspect Windows Security Protection history.
- Remove the mismatched scanner package.
- Reinstall the complete model-specific package.
- Restart Windows before reconnecting the scanner.
- Check Device Manager for warning icons.
- Test with Windows Scan or the vendor utility.
- Confirm whether the scanner supports Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Use System Restore if the failure followed a recent change.
- Run DISM and SFC only for signs of wider Windows corruption.
If the scanner remains unusable after the correct package is reinstalled, the driver may no longer support the current Windows release. In that situation, use a current TWAIN- or WIA-compatible application if the manufacturer provides one, follow documented compatibility guidance, or replace the obsolete scanner.
FAQ
Is scanusd.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence shows that it ships as a standard Windows component. It is an old vendor-supplied USB scanner minidriver associated with SCANUSD USB MiniDriver.
Which scanner installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the model. Historical MiraScan packages used the file, and Acer, BenQ, and other OEM scanners may have redistributed related packages.

Should I copy scanusd.dll into System32?
No. Reinstall the complete scanner package so Windows receives the correct INF, registration, companion files, and USB components.
Is Color Flatbed Scanner the current manufacturer?
Not necessarily. It appears as generic file metadata and does not clearly identify a current company or standalone product.
Do I need Visual C++?
Not for this DLL based on its name alone. Install the official x86 Visual C++ package only if the repaired scanner application separately reports that runtime as missing.
Can regsvr32 fix it?
Usually not as a first step. Use the OEM installer because WIA minidrivers are normally installed and configured through the driver package rather than by manually registering a copied DLL.
Can Windows Scan repair the file?
Windows Scan can help test whether the scanner is available, but it does not normally install an obsolete vendor minidriver. Restore the scanner’s original package first.
What if the scanner is no longer supported?
Try the latest model-specific driver, documented compatibility settings, or a compatible scanning application. If none works reliably, replacing the scanner may be the practical solution.
