“The program can’t start because scanusdx.dll is missing from your computer” usually means an old scanner driver is incomplete, not that Windows has lost one of its core DLLs. When scanusdx.dll cannot be found, Windows is typically trying to start an Acer or BenQ MiraScan scanner component.
Other messages may include:
- “This application failed to start because scanusdx.dll was not found.”
- “The file scanusdx.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: scanusdx.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading scanusdx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
These messages are generic descriptions associated with the file. The program requesting the DLL may be a scanner utility, a TWAIN or WIA application, an old startup component, or software that was left behind after the scanner was removed.
The 60-second answer
scanusdx.dll is a legacy flatbed-scanner driver component associated mainly with Acer and BenQ scanners using the MiraScan driver family. Archived MiraScan packages for devices such as the BenQ S2W 5000U/5000E and Acer ScanPrisa scanners contain SCANUSDX.DLL alongside Scanusd.dll, USBSCAN.SYS, scanner INF files and TWAIN components.
It is not normally a Windows system DLL, even though its embedded description may refer to “Windows (R) 2000 DDK driver.” That wording identifies the development kit or driver metadata, not a file included in every Windows installation. Microsoft describes Still Image and WIA as scanner-driver architectures in which hardware manufacturers provide device-specific components.

The safest fix is to identify the scanner model and reinstall its complete Acer or BenQ MiraScan package. Do not download only scanusdx.dll and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
Why scanusdx.dll is missing
The usual causes are:
- The scanner driver was removed or only partly installed.
- An antivirus product quarantined the file.
- The scanner software was migrated to Windows 10 or Windows 11 without a compatible driver.
- A 32-bit legacy scanner stack is being used on 64-bit Windows.
- The scanner was disconnected while its software remained installed.
- A dependency beside
scanusdx.dllis missing. - The Windows component store or driver infrastructure is damaged.
- Several MiraScan versions were mixed together.
A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that scanusdx.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while another DLL, USB component or driver dependency cannot load.
Fix 1: Identify the scanner and reinstall its complete driver
This is the most likely solution. A standalone DLL does not install the scanner because the driver package also needs its INF files, companion DLLs, TWAIN or WIA components, registry entries and USB driver.
Find the model
Check the label on the scanner, usually on the top, rear or underside. Record the exact model rather than relying only on the brand.

You can also check Device Manager:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Universal Serial Bus controllers and Other devices.
- Look for the scanner, an unknown USB device or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the entry and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Select Hardware Ids from the Property list.
- Copy the displayed values into a text file.
If the scanner is not connected, use its physical label or original installation disc. Do not guess the driver from a similar-looking model.
Remove the incomplete package
If the old software is listed, remove it before reinstalling:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find MiraScan, an Acer scanner utility, a BenQ scanner utility or the model-specific scanner software.
- Select it and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the installer does not offer an uninstall option, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, locate the scanner software and select Uninstall there.
Do not remove unrelated TWAIN packages unless you know they belong to the old scanner. Other imaging devices may use them.

Install the correct package
Use the original scanner disc when it is known to match the model. Otherwise, search the manufacturer’s official support area using the exact model, serial number or product identifier. Acer’s support process asks for product information, while BenQ provides a product download search.
Prefer the newest driver that explicitly supports the scanner and your Windows version. Some older packages target Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000 or Windows XP only. A package that installs successfully is not necessarily compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Then:
- Download the complete installer, not an individual DLL.
- Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, select it and click Apply.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup program.
- Connect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows when setup finishes.
- Test the scanner with Windows Scan, Paint, the vendor utility or a TWAIN-compatible imaging program.
A successful repair normally means the missing-DLL popup disappears and the scanner appears in the scanning application. If the application opens but cannot find the scanner, the DLL problem may be resolved while the USB or driver compatibility problem remains.

Security software can remove a driver component if it considers the file suspicious or if the package was downloaded from an untrusted source. Do not assume a detection is a false positive.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries around the time the error began.
- Open any entry that refers to the scanner installer or
scanusdx.dll. - Check the detected file path and the detection name.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from a complete, trustworthy scanner package and the path belongs to the installed scanner software.
After restoring a file, reinstall or repair the complete scanner package rather than continuing with the isolated file. Run a scan on the installer before executing it.
If a downloaded DLL is detected, delete it instead of adding an exclusion. A file with the correct name can still be the wrong version, wrong architecture or maliciously modified.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The documented archived copy of SCANUSDX.DLL is identified as a 32-bit DLL from old MiraScan software. The surrounding packages target older Windows releases and are not modern native x64 scanner drivers.
That creates several compatibility issues:
- A 32-bit imaging program may require a 32-bit TWAIN or scanner stack.
- A 64-bit Windows installation may reject an old kernel-mode USB driver.
- A scanner package may install but fail when its service or USB driver starts.
- A DLL copied from one MiraScan release may not work with another release’s INF or companion files.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Look at System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Do not treat System32 and SysWOW64 as general-purpose DLL repair folders. On 64-bit Windows, those folders have specific system roles, and placing a scanner DLL in either location does not install the rest of the driver stack.

If the manufacturer provides a later Vista or Windows 7 driver, test that package first. If no compatible driver exists, practical choices may be:
- Use the scanner with an older supported Windows computer.
- Use a compatible virtual machine where USB passthrough and licensing permit.
- Replace the scanner with a model supported by current Windows.
Windows 10 or Windows 11 may not load a Windows 2000- or Windows XP-era scanner stack, even when setup completes without an obvious error.
Fix 4: Remove obsolete scanner software if the scanner is gone
An old startup entry or device-registration component can request scanusdx.dll every time Windows starts, even after the scanner has been disconnected.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Uninstall MiraScan and the related Acer or BenQ scanner utility.
- Restart Windows.
If the popup continues:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old scanner utility or unknown entry associated with the scanner.
- Right-click it and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable Windows security software or unrelated hardware utilities merely because their names are unfamiliar. If the requester is unclear, inspect the application’s installation folder and use Event Viewer or installation logs to identify it.
Removing the parent software is safer than replacing a DLL when the hardware is no longer used.
Fix 5: Check Device Manager for a damaged scanner driver
Device Manager can help determine whether Windows sees the hardware.
- Connect and power on the scanner.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Universal Serial Bus controllers and Other devices.
- Look for a warning icon or an entry that appears only when the scanner is connected.
- Right-click the scanner entry and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
To remove a broken device entry:
- Right-click the scanner in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are removing the known old scanner package.
- Click Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the complete manufacturer package again.
If Device Manager shows that Windows cannot start the device because of an unsigned or incompatible driver, reinstalling scanusdx.dll alone will not solve it. The complete driver must be compatible with the Windows architecture and driver-signing rules.
Fix 6: Run DISM and System File Checker for Windows corruption
Because scanusdx.dll is normally a vendor scanner component, DISM and SFC are secondary fixes. They repair protected Windows components and generally will not recreate a third-party MiraScan DLL that was never part of the Windows image.

Run them when other Windows files are also failing, Windows Update is damaged or system corruption began at the same time as the scanner error.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the scanner again.
DISM should be run before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the driver investigation rather than assuming it can restore scanusdx.dll.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that implement registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for making a missing DLL work.
Running:
regsvr32 scanusdx.dll
may produce an error such as:
DllRegisterServer was not found
That result is expected when the file is a driver component that does not support self-registration. The scanner installer normally registers the required components through its setup process and INF files.
Use regsvr32 only when the scanner manufacturer’s documentation specifically instructs you to register a particular file and confirms that the file supports registration. Do not use it simply because a DLL error appeared.
Fix 8: Find the program that is requesting the DLL
If the error returns after a complete reinstall, the requesting program may be an obsolete utility rather than Windows itself.

- The program’s installation folder.
- A reputable dependency-analysis tool used to identify missing dependent modules.
The exact message matters. If scanusdx.dll exists but Windows says “The specified module could not be found,” check the surrounding MiraScan files and dependencies. Do not replace random DLLs based on the names shown by an error dialog.
If the scanner application is no longer needed, uninstall it. If it is needed, remove mixed driver versions and reinstall one complete package for the exact scanner model.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading scanusdx.dll from a random DLL repository is not the correct first repair. It can introduce:
- Malware or a modified executable file.
- A copy for the wrong scanner model.
- A mismatched MiraScan release.
- A 32-bit file where another component expects a different architecture.
- Missing companion DLLs, INF files or USB drivers.
- DLL search-order conflicts after copying it into a system folder.
Even a genuine file with the right name may not fix the underlying driver installation. Use the original installation media or the scanner manufacturer’s support route instead.
FAQ
Is scanusdx.dll part of Windows?
Usually no. It is associated with a vendor-supplied scanner driver. The “Windows 2000 DDK driver” wording is metadata connected with the old driver software, not proof that the file ships with every Windows installation.
Which scanners use scanusdx.dll?
Archived MiraScan packages associate it with older Acer ScanPrisa and BenQ flatbed scanners, including the BenQ S2W 5000U/5000E package. Do not assume every Acer or BenQ scanner uses the same release or file set.
Can I copy scanusdx.dll into System32?
Normally no. The scanner needs its complete driver package, including INF files, companion components, registry configuration and USB support.
Is scanusdx.dll malware?

There is no universal guarantee. Older MiraScan packages may install only on legacy Windows versions or may depend on drivers that current 64-bit Windows blocks. Check for a later manufacturer-supported package before attempting compatibility workarounds.
Can the scanner work without scanusdx.dll?
Only if another compatible WIA or TWAIN driver supports that scanner. If the device depends on the MiraScan stack, removing the DLL will usually leave the scanner unusable.
Should I run DISM and SFC first?
Not usually. Reinstall the exact scanner driver first. Run DISM followed by SFC when there are broader signs of Windows corruption, because those commands generally do not restore third-party scanner files.
What if the error appears after every reinstall?
Confirm the exact scanner model, remove old MiraScan versions, check antivirus quarantine, verify Windows architecture and identify the executable requesting the file. The old driver may be incompatible with the current Windows release, or another dependency may be missing.
