There is no single SCP: Secret Laboratory multiplayer lag fix. First determine whether you are seeing low FPS, network lag, packet loss, or a poorly performing server. The fastest test is to leave the affected server and join two or three nearby servers with similar or lower ping. If only one server lags, the server or its route is the likely cause; if every server is affected, troubleshoot your PC and connection.

Identify what “lag” means in SCP: Secret Laboratory

Different symptoms point to different fixes. High displayed ping is not the only cause of lag: jitter, packet loss, frame-time spikes, CPU stalls, and server performance can all make multiplayer feel delayed.

What you notice Most likely category First test
The entire image is choppy, including menus; camera movement is uneven. Low FPS or frame-time stutter Lower resolution and graphics settings.
You teleport backward, other players freeze, or doors and weapons respond late. Ping, packet loss, or jitter Try another nearby server and Ethernet.
Only one server lags, or everyone in the match complains at once. Server-side performance or routing Change servers and report the affected one.
The server list loads slowly, joining takes too long, or you are kicked after loading. Authentication, web-request, or connection problem Restart Steam and check the official network troubleshooting guidance.

Low FPS can feel like input delay, but lowering graphics settings will not repair packet loss or a struggling server. Conversely, a fast internet connection cannot make an underpowered GPU render frames smoothly.

Run these quick tests first

  1. Join another nearby server. Choose a server in the same broad region with a moderate player count. Compare movement, door and elevator interactions, voice chat, and weapon response.
  2. Test at least two or three servers. If only one is problematic, do not reinstall the game immediately. Its plugins, player count, host, or network route may be responsible.
  3. Restart SCP:SL and Steam. Also allow any pending game or Steam update to finish.
  4. Close competing traffic. Pause downloads, cloud synchronization, streaming, peer-to-peer traffic, and recording software.
  5. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. Ethernet removes many wireless variables, although it cannot guarantee that packet loss or ISP problems are gone.
  6. Lower graphics settings. If the image becomes smooth, you were primarily dealing with rendering performance rather than ping.

Community reports have described servers performing differently even when their displayed ping is similar. That is anecdotal evidence, not a benchmark, but it is another reason not to judge server quality by ping alone (community movement-lag report).

Check whether your PC meets the current requirements

The current requirements listed by the official SCP: Secret Laboratory sources are more demanding than older pre-Update-14 guides may suggest. Update 14.0 moved the game to Unity 6 and introduced a Windows 10/11 21H1-or-newer requirement for clients.

  • Operating system: Windows 10 version 21H1 or newer, or Windows 11.
  • System: 64-bit operating system and a 64-bit CPU supporting x86-64-v2.
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM minimum; 6 GB recommended.
  • Graphics: GTX 1050 Ti-equivalent with 4 GB VRAM minimum; RTX 3060-equivalent with 8 GB VRAM recommended.
  • Graphics API: DirectX 11 support.
  • Storage: 8 GB available space.
  • Important limitation: Intel integrated graphics are explicitly unsupported.
  • Internet: Broadband connection.

Check the official SCP: Secret Laboratory website and the Steam store page for the latest requirements before upgrading or diagnosing hardware.

Fix low FPS and stuttering

Lower the settings that affect frame time

Change settings in this order:

  1. Lower resolution or render scale.
  2. Reduce shadows and lighting quality.
  3. Lower effects, post-processing, ambient occlusion, and similar visual effects.
  4. Reduce texture quality if VRAM usage is high.
  5. Disable visual filters and overlays.
  6. Cap the frame rate at a level your PC can maintain consistently instead of chasing a fluctuating maximum.

The official low-FPS guide also identifies graphics API selection, Windows power settings, startup applications, FreeSync, overlays, and GPU drivers as relevant variables.

Disable overlays and filters temporarily

Test SCP:SL with the Discord overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlay, Xbox Game Bar, recording tools, browser hardware acceleration, RGB utilities, motherboard software, and hardware-monitoring tools disabled. The official guide specifically calls out GeForce Filters as a possible performance problem; disable them in the NVIDIA app or GeForce Experience while testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If security software is suspected, use its official exclusion procedure or perform a controlled temporary test, then restore protection.

Update or roll back the graphics driver

Install the latest stable NVIDIA or AMD driver and restart Windows. “Latest” is not always best: if the stutter began immediately after a driver update, roll back to a known-good version and test again.

Try a different graphics API

DirectX 12 is the current standard graphics API as of SCP:SL version 14.1, but the official troubleshooting documentation recommends testing another API when the default behaves poorly.

  1. Open Steam and go to Library.
  2. Right-click SCP: Secret Laboratory and choose Properties.
  3. On General, find Launch Options.
  4. Test one launch option at a time.
-force-d3d11

If that does not help, remove it and test:

-force-d3d12

You can also test:

-force-vulkan

Do not stack all three options. Vulkan is experimental and is not universally faster or more stable; it may be useful on some configurations, especially certain Linux or AMD setups. For a low-end troubleshooting test, the official documentation lists:

Reset unsuitable or corrupted settings

If the problem began after an update or graphics change, reset the game before manually editing configuration files:

  1. Open Steam Library and right-click SCP:SL.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. If necessary, set the launch-choice setting to Ask when starting game.
  4. Launch the game.
  5. Choose Play SCP: Secret Laboratory and RESET ALL SETTINGS.

This can remove preferred graphics and control settings, so you will need to configure them again. Persistent problems may require the registry or configuration recovery steps in the official crash and settings guide.

Fix ping, rubber-banding, and packet loss

  1. Use Ethernet if possible. If you must use Wi-Fi, test near the router and try the least congested available band.
  2. Stop bandwidth-heavy activity. Pause downloads, video streams, cloud backups, and other traffic on the network.
  3. Restart the modem and router. This can clear a temporary local-network fault, but it will not fix a distant server or bad ISP route.
  4. Test another device or game. If several services lag, the problem is probably broader than SCP:SL.
  5. Compare server regions. Nearby servers working normally points toward geographic distance or routing rather than game rendering.
  6. Try a phone hotspot briefly. If the hotspot works while home internet does not, the router, ISP, or home network becomes more likely. A hotspot can itself add latency, packet loss, and data limits, so treat it as a diagnostic comparison.

Use a VPN only as a controlled routing test

A VPN is not a guaranteed lag fix. If it improves the connection, the cause may involve ISP routing, peering, DNS, or the regional path. If it increases ping, creates packet loss, or causes the server to reject the connection, remove it. Some SCP:SL servers may block VPN traffic. The official authentication guide recommends treating VPN use as a diagnostic tool rather than a default solution. Contact your ISP if the result strongly suggests a routing problem.

Verify the installation through Steam

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click SCP:SL and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files.

Verification can replace missing or damaged files after an interrupted update or corrupted installation. It cannot fix unstable Wi-Fi, an overloaded server, unsupported graphics hardware, or a poor ISP route. It also does not repair custom server plugins. Reinstall only after the diagnostic steps above fail; reinstalling cannot solve a server-side problem.

Advanced launch options for connection and authentication issues

Use these only when the symptom involves a slow server list, web requests, authentication, or connection failures. Test one option at a time, record the result, and remove it if it does not help:

-httpproxy
-unitywebrequest
-unitywebrequestdispatcher

Some alternatives may slow server-list loading. For protocol-specific diagnostics, the official documentation also lists:

--ipv4
--ipv6

These are not ordinary FPS fixes. Use them only when IPv4 or IPv6 routing appears relevant. Consult the official launch-options page and the authentication timeout guide for the applicable failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the server or ISP is responsible

  • Only one server lags: The server, its plugins, host, player count, or route is the leading suspect. Try another server and notify that server’s administrators.
  • Every server lags on one PC: Check FPS, requirements, drivers, overlays, renderer, and settings.
  • Every server lags on home internet but not a hotspot: Investigate the router, ISP, congestion, or routing.
  • Distant servers lag while nearby servers do not: Geographic distance or network routing is likely involved.
  • Everyone in one match lags: Server-side performance is more likely than your computer.
  • The game is smooth but interactions are delayed: Focus on packet loss, jitter, server performance, and network path—not graphics quality.

Final troubleshooting checklist

  1. Classify the symptom as choppy FPS, rubber-banding, server lag, or loading/authentication failure.
  2. Test two or three nearby servers.
  3. Confirm Windows, CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, and storage meet the current requirements.
  4. Lower graphics settings and disable overlays or filters.
  5. Test -force-d3d11, then other APIs individually if necessary.
  6. Update or roll back the GPU driver if the issue follows a driver change.
  7. Reset all game settings.
  8. Verify Steam game files.
  9. Use Ethernet, stop competing traffic, restart the router, and compare with a hotspot.
  10. Use VPN, IPv4, IPv6, or web-request options only for targeted diagnostics.

When to contact official support

Contact the official SCP: Secret Laboratory Steam support page or the game’s official technical-support channels when every server remains unplayable after testing another network, the game repeatedly crashes or freezes after joining, authentication errors persist, or the problem survives a settings reset, file verification, and graphics API tests.

Include your Windows version; CPU, GPU, RAM, and GPU-driver version; SCP:SL version or branch; affected server and approximate region; whether every server is affected; approximate displayed ping; exact symptoms; results from Ethernet, hotspot, or VPN testing; error messages; crash logs; and clear reproduction steps. This information helps separate a client, network, authentication, and server-specific failure.
