Start with this quick diagnosis
Before replacing anything, check three details:
- Which program or shortcut shows the error? If it mentions Driver Booster, that is the most likely owner.
- When does it appear? Note whether it happens while launching Driver Booster, after a driver update, at Windows startup, or after uninstalling software.
- Where is the file located, if you can find it? A copy inside an IObit Driver Booster folder is more consistent with the known package layout than a copy in
System32,%TEMP%, Downloads, or an unrelated application folder. - Is the caller 32-bit or 64-bit? Driver Booster packages can contain both
SetVolume32.dllandSetVolume64.dll. They are not interchangeable.

What setvolume32.dll does
Public Driver Booster package inventories place SetVolume32.dll in a DrvInstall directory beside SetVolume64.dll, driver-installation executables, and related libraries. This indicates that it is a helper used by Driver Booster’s driver-installation subsystem.

A typical older installation path is:
C:Program Files (x86)IObitDriver Booster<version>DrvInstall
The exact folder and file details can vary between releases. Do not assume that an old version number, file size, or hash applies to every Driver Booster installation.
There is no evidence that setvolume32.dll ships with Windows. It is not identified as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. Installing those packages solely because this filename appears is unlikely to restore the correct application component.

What the Windows messages mean
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because setvolume32.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting setvolume32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading setvolume32.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because setvolume32.dll was not found.”
- “setvolume32.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not always mean that the named file alone is missing. Windows can also display “The specified module could not be found” when a dependency required by the DLL is missing.
The message may appear after an incomplete uninstall, a damaged update, antivirus quarantine, or a leftover shortcut or scheduled task that still launches an old Driver Booster component.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Driver Booster
This is the most likely and safest fix when Driver Booster is named in the error.
Uninstall the damaged installation
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Driver Booster.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If the uninstaller offers a repair option and Driver Booster is still needed, use that first. If repair does not complete or the error returns, uninstall the program instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReinstall from the official source
- Open a browser and go to IObit’s official Driver Booster product page.
- Download the installer appropriate for your supported Windows version.
- Do not use a standalone DLL download or a repackaged installer.
- Run the installer.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Launch Driver Booster and repeat the action that previously triggered the error.
A successful repair means Driver Booster starts without the DLL message and its driver-installation functions work normally. If you no longer want Driver Booster, leave it uninstalled and remove any leftover shortcut or startup entry instead of restoring setvolume32.dll by itself.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Security software may quarantine files from bundled driver-updater packages. Do not immediately click Restore or Allow.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
setvolume32.dll, Driver Booster, or the folder containing it. - Open the detection details and record the original path and detection name.
- Run a full scan before making a decision.
A particular third-party report associates one sample with IObit and Driver Booster but also records a PUP.Gen detection and an invalid signature status. That report concerns one hash and one scanner result; it is not a universal verdict on every file with this name.
If Driver Booster was intentionally installed and the file was in its expected application directory, reinstall the complete application from IObit rather than restoring the quarantined DLL. If the file was in %TEMP%, a random download folder, a user profile, or an unrelated program directory, treat it as suspicious and scan the system.

Fix 3: Remove a stale startup item or scheduled task
Sometimes Driver Booster has been removed but a shortcut, scheduled task, or startup entry still points to its old files.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Driver Booster or an entry whose location points to an old IObit folder.
- Right-click it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Check Task Scheduler
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
taskschd.mscand press Enter. - Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Inspect tasks that mention Driver Booster, IObit, or an old installation path.
- Double-click a task and inspect the Actions tab.
- If it points to a program that no longer exists, right-click the task and choose Delete.
Do not delete a task merely because it has a familiar-sounding name. Confirm that its action points to the removed or damaged Driver Booster installation.
If the error names another executable, repair that program first. setvolume32.dll may simply be a dependency loaded by the named application.
Fix 4: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit pairing
Driver Booster packages can contain both:
SetVolume32.dll
SetVolume64.dll
A 32-bit application normally loads the 32-bit DLL, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs the matching 64-bit component. Do not rename one file to the other, copy the 64-bit file over the 32-bit file, or place either file in System32 as a workaround.
The correct solution is to reinstall the complete matching Driver Booster package. A 32-bit application may be installed beneath C:Program Files (x86), which is normal on 64-bit Windows.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the affected driver
If the error began after a failed driver update, the driver installation itself may be incomplete. Reinstall the affected hardware driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update rather than replacing setvolume32.dll alone.
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and device name.
- Choose Update Driver and select Search automatically for drivers.
- If that does not help, choose Uninstall Device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer if Windows does not reinstall it automatically.
If Device Manager shows a warning icon, record the device name and error code before changing anything.
Manually finding the correct driver for each device can mean hunting through hardware pages and comparing versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full-version driver installation is optional, and reinstalling Driver Booster remains the definitive fix when Driver Booster owns the missing DLL.

DISM and SFC do not normally restore a third-party Driver Booster DLL. They are appropriate when many unrelated programs fail, Windows system files are damaged, or Windows itself behaves abnormally.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:

- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart Windows when both commands complete and test the affected program again.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not prove setvolume32.dll exists. SFC primarily checks protected Windows files, not application files installed by Driver Booster.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed is slow and does not replace reinstalling the owning application. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and identify repair issues for users who want assistance with the manual process; its full-version repair is optional, and Driver Booster must still be reinstalled when its private DLL is missing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not copy the DLL into System32
Avoid downloading setvolume32.dll from a random DLL repository or copying it into C:WindowsSystem32.
An isolated file may be:
- The wrong version.
- The wrong architecture.
- Modified or bundled with unwanted software.
- Missing its own dependencies.
- Incompatible with the installed Driver Booster release.
Windows searches for DLLs using defined application and system paths. An application-specific DLL should normally remain beside the application or in its private subdirectory. Copying it into a system directory can create version conflicts and unsafe DLL-loading behavior.
The safe source is the original application installer from IObit. If you decide Driver Booster is unwanted, uninstall it rather than obtaining a replacement DLL.

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
There is no verified evidence that setvolume32.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Therefore, this is not a recommended fix:
regsvr32 setvolume32.dll
It may produce an error stating that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. Even if registration succeeded, it would not recreate a missing file or install its dependencies.
If the file is outside Driver Booster
A copy found outside an IObit Driver Booster directory deserves additional scrutiny.
- Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Check the Location shown on the General tab.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present, and inspect the signer.
- Open Details and record the product information.
- Submit the file to Microsoft Defender for scanning or run a full scan.
- Check which executable loaded or requested it in the error message, Event Viewer, or the application’s installation directory.
- Remove the parent program if you do not recognize or trust it.
A filename can be copied by malware or counterfeit software. Do not decide that a file is safe solely because it is named setvolume32.dll, and do not assume that a reported publisher or hash applies to every copy.
FAQ
Is setvolume32.dll part of Windows?
No public evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with IObit Driver Booster and its driver-installation files.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not solely for this filename. Those runtimes use different documented component files. Reinstall Driver Booster first.
Why does the error say the module cannot be found when the DLL is present?
A dependency required by setvolume32.dll may be missing, or the application may be loading the wrong architecture. Reinstall the complete application package rather than copying individual files.

Can I use SetVolume64.dll instead?
No. A 64-bit DLL is not a substitute for the 32-bit variant. Reinstall the matching Driver Booster package.
What if reinstalling Driver Booster does not work?
Check antivirus quarantine, remove stale startup tasks, confirm the caller named in the error, and inspect the file path and architecture. If many unrelated applications also fail, run DISM followed by SFC.
Should I repair or remove Driver Booster?
Repair or reinstall it if you deliberately use it. If you no longer want it, uninstall it and remove orphaned startup entries instead of restoring setvolume32.dll.
