What order should I play the Nioh games in?

This is release order. Producer and director Fumihiko Yasuda noted that Nioh was released in 2017, followed by Nioh 2 in 2020, in a PlayStation Blog message. Nioh 3 released on 6 February 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC via Steam, according to KOEI TECMO Europe.

Do you need to play the first two before Nioh 3?
The official sources reviewed identify Nioh 3 as the latest installment and describe it as a continuation of the series, but they do not establish that the earlier games are required prerequisites. If you mainly want to play the newest game, you can start with Nioh 3; choose release order if you want the fuller series context. The PlayStation Store listing describes it as a continuation, not as a game that requires completion of its predecessors.
Is release order the same as story chronology?
Not necessarily, and the official material reviewed here does not settle the detailed in-universe order of Nioh and Nioh 2. Do not treat the release-order recommendation as a verified chronology or rely on it to answer which story happens first. If chronology is your main concern, the available official sources leave that question unresolved.

How should I choose editions for the first two games?
On PS5, The Nioh Collection bundles remastered versions of both earlier games and all DLC for each, making it a convenient way to follow the recommended order. It is a PS5 package, not a PC edition. Nioh 2 – The Complete Edition includes all three of that game’s DLC expansions, according to PlayStation Blog. Editions and upgrade paths differ by platform, so check the exact store listing for your system before buying.

Where does Nioh 3 fit?
Nioh 3 is the latest entry. It launched on 6 February 2026 for PS5 and Windows PC via Steam; it is not an upcoming release. KOEI TECMO America also announced a PS5 physical Treasure Box containing the base game, a Scampuss keychain, a desk pad, an official artbook and a soundtrack CD. That announcement confirms the listed contents, not current stock or separate availability.
