The practical choice depends on your local PS5 price, whether you need a disc drive, and how much the PS5 Pro’s graphics features matter to you.
When does the PS6 come out, and how much will it cost?
There is no confirmed PS6 release date or price. In its FY2025 Q4 investor Q&A, Sony said: “As for next-generation platforms, no decisions have been made regarding timing or pricing, and we plan to consider these matters while monitoring future conditions.” You can read the statement in Sony’s investor Q&A. Rumors and past console-generation patterns are not an announced schedule, so there is no reliable date or price to use when deciding whether to wait.
What does a PS5 cost now?
Sony’s recommended US prices, effective April 2, 2026, are shown below. These are recommended prices, not guaranteed live retailer prices; Sony publishes different prices for other territories and directs buyers to local sellers. Check the price in your region before deciding.

What you can play if you buy a PS5 now
A PS5 gives you access to its current game library as well as most PS4 games. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games can be played on PS5, though some exceptions and differences in functionality apply. The broader PlayStation audience is substantial: Sony reported more than 93 million cumulative PS5 units sold by the end of March 2026 and 125 million PlayStation monthly active user accounts that month. Those figures describe adoption, not a guarantee that any particular game will suit you.
If a specific upcoming release is driving your decision, check its latest schedule. In its June 2026 announcement, Sony said Grand Theft Auto VI was scheduled for PS5 on November 19, 2026. A scheduled date can change; this is a reason to consider playing on PS5, not evidence of when the PS6 will arrive. See Sony’s announcement for the date it published.

Choose a disc or digital PS5 based on your games
If you own PS4 game discs or want to use PS5 game discs, choose a PS5 model with a disc drive. PS4 discs cannot be used on PS5 Digital Edition. If you buy games digitally and do not need disc playback, compare the Digital Edition’s local price with the disc-drive model; whether the saving is worthwhile depends on your buying habits and regional prices. Is PS5 Pro worth the premium?
PS5 Pro is the higher-priced option for buyers who place extra value on its graphics capabilities. At its September 2024 announcement, Sony said its GPU had 67% more compute units and its memory was 28% faster than the then-current PS5, and highlighted PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. These are Sony’s launch-era specifications, not an independent comparison of performance across games. They do not mean every game will look or run better by one fixed amount. Compare the local Pro price with the standard PS5 and decide whether those features justify the difference for the games you play. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement describes its hardware and features.

Account for storage if you expect a large library
You can expand PS5 storage with a compatible M.2 SSD and play PS5 games from it. Sony cautions that not every compatible drive will deliver identical performance, so check its requirements before buying. PS5 games stored on an external USB drive must be moved back to console storage or M.2 storage before they can be played. Use this checklist to make the call
- Buy now if you have PS5 games you want to play soon, including a scheduled release you have checked recently, and the local price fits your budget.
- Wait if you are satisfied with your current console or PC and would rather postpone spending, knowing Sony has not set a next-generation timing or price.
- Choose a disc-drive PS5 if you need to play PS4 discs or value physical games; choose Digital Edition only if an all-digital library suits you and its local saving makes sense.
- Consider PS5 Pro if its graphics features are worth the higher local price to you; do not assume a fixed improvement in every game.
- Check the full cost using local console prices and, if needed, a compatible M.2 SSD. Sony’s recommended US prices are not universal or necessarily what a retailer currently charges.
