The real choice is how to balance bitrate, picture quality, resolution, frame rate, codec support, upload stability, and the computer’s ability to encode in real time. Too little bitrate can make fast-moving games look blocky; too much for your connection can cause dropped frames or interruptions.
What “compressing video” means for a live stream
People use “compress” to mean two related things: encoding a live camera or game feed into a format a platform can ingest, and reducing the amount of data the stream sends per second. Encoding is a normal part of live delivery. You generally do not send uncompressed video; you choose settings that make the encoded stream fit your platform, equipment, and connection.
Compression reduces data by discarding some visual information. The balance depends on the codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings. A more efficient codec may preserve more quality at a given bitrate, but it only helps if the platform accepts it and viewers’ playback paths support it. Google’s YouTube Live ingestion protocol comparison describes VP9 and HEVC as potentially more efficient than H.264; that is not a guarantee that either is the right choice for every stream.
Pros of compressing video for live streaming
It makes live transmission practical
Encoding turns a live feed into a streamable format and bitrate. That makes it possible to send video over a real-world internet connection rather than attempting to transmit a huge raw video signal. YouTube publishes encoder requirements and recommends selecting a quality your connection can reliably sustain in its live encoder settings guidance.

It can reduce network demand
At a similar perceived quality, a more efficient supported codec may need less bitrate; at the same bitrate, it may preserve more detail. Google notes that this could decrease buffering, but the result depends on the codec, settings, platform support, and connection. Do not assume that choosing the newest codec automatically improves a particular stream.
It can make streams available at different playback qualities
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Transcoding can create versions at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates. Availability and behavior are platform-specific: OBS’s transcoding overview explains that services differ, so do not promise viewers selectable quality options without checking the destination’s current rules.

Cons and tradeoffs
Too little bitrate damages picture quality
When the bitrate is too low for the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and scene complexity, compression artifacts become more visible. Fast camera pans, detailed textures, foliage, particles, and noisy footage can suffer sooner than a static menu or a presenter against a plain background. For games, test actual gameplay rather than judging from a still screen.
Encoding takes computing resources
The encoder has to process each frame quickly enough to keep up with the live video. Software encoding can load the CPU; hardware encoding moves work to dedicated hardware, but capabilities and image quality vary by encoder and generation. Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines discuss both x264 and NVENC as practical choices. Neither hardware nor software encoding is universally superior: compare image quality, system load, and whether encoding keeps pace on your own setup.

Too much bitrate can make delivery unstable
A higher bitrate can improve quality only up to a point. If your upload connection cannot sustain it, the stream may drop frames or disconnect. Twitch cautions that increasing bitrate can improve quality only so far, and recommends tested settings that do not waste bandwidth. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network problem between the computer and ingest server.
Codec efficiency comes with compatibility limits
A codec’s compression advantage is useful only if the platform accepts it and the viewing path can play it. Check current destination guidance before committing to a less common codec, especially for an event where compatibility matters more than a potential bandwidth saving.

How to choose compression settings
- Check the platform’s current requirements first. Confirm accepted codecs, resolution and frame-rate options, bitrate guidance, keyframe requirements, and rate control. YouTube currently recommends constant bitrate (CBR) in its encoder guidance; Twitch recommends CBR whenever possible. Platform settings can change, so use the current documentation for your destination: YouTube and Twitch.
- Leave upload headroom. A speed test is a useful starting point, not proof that your connection can sustain the same rate throughout a stream. Avoid setting the stream bitrate at the full measured upload capacity, particularly on a shared or variable connection. YouTube advises choosing a quality level that is reliable for the connection and testing it.
- Match resolution and frame rate to the available bitrate. Fast motion and fine detail need more data than slides or a talking head at otherwise similar settings. If you cannot provide enough stable bitrate for a high-resolution, high-frame-rate stream, lowering one of those settings may produce a cleaner picture than forcing the highest option.
- Pick a codec your platform supports. Consider efficiency alongside ingest and playback compatibility. A codec is not a practical upgrade if the destination cannot accept it or the audience cannot play it reliably.
- Test a representative workload before going live. Include the kind of movement and audio you expect in the actual stream, then check platform stream health and adjust. YouTube specifically recommends tests with similar audio and movement. Its guidance says, “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- If frames drop, troubleshoot the network path. Check the upload connection and ingest route, then lower the bitrate if the link cannot sustain it. A lower setting can improve stability, though it may reduce image quality.
How to compare codecs, encoders, or settings
Compare options under the same representative gameplay and connection conditions rather than relying on labels such as “hardware” or “next-generation.” The useful questions are:
- Which setting looks better at the same bitrate?
- What bitrate does each option need for acceptable quality?
- Does the CPU or GPU keep up with encoding in real time?
- Does the platform accept the codec, and can the intended viewers play it?
- Does it remain stable on the actual upload connection?
- What viewer renditions, if any, does the platform provide?
There is no evidence-based universal percentage for bandwidth savings or quality improvement across all codecs and streams. Results vary with encoder implementation, content, settings, and platform support.
