Yes, deleting shader-cache files is generally safe—but it is not a routine FPS boost. Clear the cache when troubleshooting crashes, visual artifacts, unusual shader stutter, repeated shader rebuilding, or problems that began after a game or graphics-driver update. Afterward, expect longer loading and temporary stutter while shaders compile again.

If your games are working normally, leave the cache alone. Its purpose is to save compilation work and improve subsequent launches.

What a shader cache does

A shader is a small GPU program responsible for effects such as lighting, shadows, materials, reflections and post-processing. A game’s shader code must often be compiled for your particular graphics card, driver, graphics API and game build.

The compiled result is stored so the same work does not have to happen repeatedly. AMD describes shader caching as a way to improve loading times and reduce CPU usage, while Microsoft’s Direct3D specification documents persistent, disk-backed caches that can survive between launches: AMD’s shader-cache explanation and the Direct3D shader-cache specification.

There is not one universal “shader cache” on a Windows gaming PC. Several layers may exist independently:

  • Windows/DirectX cache: shared or managed by Windows and Direct3D.
  • Driver cache: maintained by NVIDIA, AMD or Intel and associated with a driver, GPU, application or graphics API.
  • Game cache: created by the game engine, often in the installation directory, AppData or Saved Games.
  • Launcher or precompiled cache: downloaded or managed by platforms such as Steam. Intel’s documented precompiled-shader feature, for example, is associated with supported Steam-installed games: Intel’s documentation.

Clearing one layer does not necessarily clear the others.

Does deleting shader cache improve FPS?

Usually, no. Deleting a healthy cache removes compiled data that was helping the game avoid repeated shader compilation. The result can be temporarily worse frame pacing, longer loading and more CPU activity—not higher average frame rates.

Clearing can help when the existing data is corrupted, stale or incompatible with a changed driver or game build. In that situation, rebuilding the cache may remove crashes, artifacts or abnormal stutter. It is best understood as a troubleshooting reset, not a universal optimization.

Do not delete the cache after every driver update or game launch. Drivers and game engines can invalidate incompatible entries themselves. Microsoft’s documentation describes versioning behavior in which a cache can be cleared and recreated when its stored version no longer matches: Direct3D shader-cache versioning.

When should you clear it?

Situation Recommended action Reason
Games run normally Do nothing The cache is serving its purpose.
One game crashes after an update Verify its files, then clear that game’s documented cache This limits the reset to the affected title.
Several DirectX games develop artifacts or crashes Clear the Windows DirectX cache and investigate the driver A shared component may be involved.
A driver update is followed by unusual stutter or corruption Check the driver’s notes and clear the relevant cache if recommended Driver changes can invalidate compiled data.
The cache uses meaningful disk space Clear it or reduce the driver cache limit Cache data will eventually return as games run.
Low FPS with no shader-related symptoms Do not start with cache deletion Power limits, thermals, settings, CPU limits or a bad driver are more likely.
Shaders rebuild on every launch Investigate why the cache is not persisting Repeated deletion treats the symptom rather than the cause.

NVIDIA specifically recommends deleting its shader-cache files when damaged files are associated with launch crashes, reduced performance or visual artifacts: NVIDIA’s current support procedure.

The safest first step: clear Windows’ DirectX Shader Cache

Use Windows’ built-in cleanup before manually hunting through AppData. Labels can vary by Windows 10/11 release, edition and language.

Windows 11 Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Storage.
  3. Open Temporary files.
  4. Select only DirectX Shader Cache.
  5. Choose Remove files.

If DirectX Shader Cache is not listed, do not substitute every temporary-file category. In particular, do not select Downloads, Recycle Bin or other personal-data categories unless you understand what they contain.

Disk Cleanup

  1. Open Start and search for Disk Cleanup.
  2. Select the Windows system drive, normally C:.
  3. Tick DirectX Shader Cache.
  4. Confirm the deletion.

This Windows reset may not remove a game’s own cache, Steam’s downloaded shader data, or every vendor-specific driver cache.

NVIDIA: reset the driver cache

NVIDIA’s current support instructions use the NVIDIA App and several cache folders. Close games, launchers, browsers, recording software and GPU utilities first.

  1. Open the NVIDIA App.
  2. Select Graphics, then open Global Settings.
  3. Find Shader Cache Size and set it to Off.
  4. Apply the setting and restart Windows.
  5. Press Win + R, enter %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocal, and press Enter.
  6. Open NVIDIA and delete the contents only of DXCache and GLCache.
  7. Return to the Local folder, open NVIDIA Corporation, and delete the contents only of NV_Cache.
  8. Reopen the NVIDIA App and set Shader Cache Size back to Driver Default or another suitable value.
  9. Apply the setting and restart the PC again.

Delete files inside the named cache folders—not the parent folders and never the entire NVIDIA or NVIDIA Corporation directory. If Windows says files are in use, close more applications and reboot before trying again. Avoid force-delete utilities.

NVIDIA says its current Driver Default is 16 GB, but that value is version-dependent rather than a permanent specification. Larger limits can be useful for larger game libraries; they are not a reason to delete a healthy cache. NVIDIA also notes that installing a new driver can remove the cache and cause first-run stutter while it is rebuilt: NVIDIA Control Panel documentation.

Display Driver Uninstaller includes a Clean Shader Cache (Only) option, but DDU is an advanced tool. It is disproportionate for an ordinary cache reset and should not be your first step.

AMD Radeon: use the built-in reset when available

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition enables shader caching by default as AMD optimized. Menu names and locations vary with Adrenalin version, graphics card and installation type.

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  2. Open the Gaming or Graphics section.
  3. Look for Reset Shader Cache, Perform Reset or equivalent wording.
  4. Confirm the reset.
  5. Restart the game and allow its shader-compilation process to finish.

If the control is missing, begin with Windows’ DirectX Shader Cache cleanup. Update or reinstall the correctly matched AMD driver only when the evidence points to a driver problem; use AMD Cleanup Utility for a broader driver cleanup, not as a routine cache-maintenance step. AMD’s software instructions are release-sensitive, and its release notes document title- and configuration-specific shader-cache bugs, including cases involving failed caching or repeated rebuilding: AMD shader-cache FAQ, AMD installation documentation, AMD release notes.

Intel Arc: avoid guessing at folder paths

Intel’s Precompiled Shaders feature checks for pre-optimized shader files matching the hardware and driver configuration. Intel documents it for supported Steam-installed games, so it should not be treated as identical to every Windows or Intel driver cache.

  1. Start with Windows’ DirectX Shader Cache cleanup.
  2. Use Intel Graphics Software or the game/launcher’s own reset control if the specific title provides one.
  3. Check Intel’s support documentation for your Arc driver and software version.
  4. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, consider a correctly matched driver update or rollback rather than deleting arbitrary Intel folders.

Intel driver notes can contain title-specific shader-cache mitigations, so the exact game and driver version matter: Intel driver release notes.

Game-specific caches: follow the publisher’s instructions

A game may keep a separate cache in its installation folder, AppData, Saved Games or another engine-specific location. Unreal Engine, Unity, proprietary engines and games using DirectX, Vulkan or OpenGL do not share one universal path.

  1. Check the game’s official support page first.
  2. Use the launcher’s verify files or repair function if corruption is suspected.
  3. Back up configuration files before manual deletion.
  4. Delete only the exact shader-cache file or folder named by the publisher.

For example, Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance identifies game-managed files named shader.cache or shader.cache2 in the folder containing the executable, while directing users to the GPU manufacturer for driver-generated caches. That is an example for supported Capcom titles, not a universal path: Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guide.

Steam and precompiled shader data are separate concerns

Steam may download precompiled shader data, while the game and graphics driver can maintain their own caches. Removing one does not necessarily remove the others. A Steam reset can also trigger additional downloads or local processing.

Use Steam’s current in-client storage or download controls where available rather than relying on a fixed folder path copied from an old guide. Steam’s general troubleshooting material also points to outdated drivers and incorrect graphics settings as common performance causes: Steam Support.

What happens after you delete the cache?

On the first launch

  • The game may display “building shaders,” “optimizing shaders” or similar text.
  • Loading may take longer.
  • CPU usage may rise.
  • Early gameplay may hitch as new effects are encountered.
  • Some games compile most shaders up front; others compile them during play.
  • A launcher may download precompiled data instead of compiling everything locally.

NVIDIA warns that first-run gameplay can stutter after a driver installation while the cache is regenerated. The duration and severity depend on the game, API, hardware and amount of shader data.

On later launches

Once the cache has been rebuilt and is being retained correctly, later launches should normally regain the benefits of cached compilation. The cache reappearing after deletion is expected; it means applications are rebuilding the data they need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If clearing it does not fix the problem

Do not keep deleting the cache in a loop. Persistent stutter or crashes after recompilation suggest another cause, such as a game-engine compilation problem, driver regression, unstable overclock or undervolt, thermal throttling, insufficient RAM or VRAM, storage trouble, corrupted files, incorrect settings, or conflicts involving ray tracing, frame generation, overlays or recording software.

  1. Restart the PC and test again after the rebuild has completed.
  2. Verify or repair the game’s files.
  3. Update the GPU driver—or roll back if the issue began with that driver.
  4. Return GPU and CPU overclocks or undervolts to stock settings.
  5. Check GPU/CPU temperatures, VRAM use and system-memory use.
  6. Temporarily disable overlays, capture tools and recording features.
  7. Test another game using the same graphics API.
  8. Review current game, Windows and GPU-vendor support notes.
  9. Consider a clean driver installation only when the evidence indicates a damaged or failed driver installation.

Clearing a cache cannot repair defective hardware, a broken shader compiler or a buggy game update. If only one title is affected, prioritize that title’s support documentation. If several games using the same API are affected, investigate the shared Windows or driver layer.

Important edge cases

Hybrid graphics and multiple GPUs

Laptops may use integrated and discrete GPUs, and Microsoft documents cache data stored side by side for multiple adapters. A game launched on the wrong adapter may therefore have different cache data from the one you expected.

Different graphics APIs

A Windows DirectX cleanup may not remove Vulkan- or OpenGL-specific data. Driver and game caches can also be API-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeated shader compilation every launch

This can result from driver changes, game patches, damaged cache files, insufficient write access, game bugs, a cleanup utility deleting the cache, different adapters being selected, or a title using multiple renderers. The correct fix is to identify why the cache is not persisting—not to delete it repeatedly.

Disk space and SSD concerns

A shader cache consumes storage, but it is normally much smaller than a modern game installation. Clear it to recover meaningful space or troubleshoot a problem, not because ordinary cache writes are inherently dangerous to an SSD.

Personal data

Shader-cache files are generally not save games or personal documents, but nearby AppData folders can contain browser profiles, settings, screenshots and saves. Manual cleanup should always target the exact cache contents.

Final decision checklist

  • Are games working normally? Leave the cache alone.
  • Did a crash, artifact or unusual stutter begin after a game or driver change? A targeted reset may be reasonable.
  • Is the issue only low FPS? Investigate settings, temperatures, CPU/GPU limits and drivers first.
  • Is there an official reset option or support procedure? Use it before guessing at folders.
  • Have you closed applications and prepared for recompilation? If not, wait.
  • Did the reset fail? Stop repeating it and investigate the driver, game, hardware or system.
