There are two Eternal Fire priest encounters in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and they have different choices. If you mean the young deacon in In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow, explore the mine, mention the priest who stayed behind, then defend the deacon as innocent and capable of doing good without the Church. That is the dialogue path a walkthrough reports can persuade Reinald to spare him. If you mean the priest in Funeral Pyres, your choice is whether to accept his bribe or refuse it after uncovering his role in a fisstech deal.
Which priest do you mean?
The phrase “Forgotten Priest” can point to either of two separate quests. Funeral Pyres is an earlier Velen quest about an Eternal Fire priest who hires Geralt to burn corpses and conceal evidence of his fisstech dealings. In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow, added with the next-gen update, Patch 4.0, features a young deacon and Reinald; exploring the mine reveals the story of a priest who remained there. The latter is the spare-or-kill decision involving the deacon.
How to spare the deacon in In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow
Explore the mine before the confrontation
Search the mine and find the evidence about the priest who stayed behind. The priest’s testament, an in-game document found there, opens optional dialogue with Reinald. Going straight to the choice can leave you without this argument.
Use the sympathetic dialogue path
- Bring up the priest who remained in the mine when speaking with Reinald.
- Argue that the deacon is innocent.
- Say that he does not need the Church to do good.
A walkthrough reports that this sequence can persuade Reinald to spare the boy. The outcome is conditional on the dialogue sequence: failing to mention the priest first and then agreeing with Reinald can lead to the deacon’s death. The available account does not establish a guaranteed result independent of the full conversation.

What happens if you side with Reinald?
Dialogue that accepts Reinald’s judgment can result in the deacon being killed. In particular, the walkthrough warns against agreeing with Reinald before raising the example of the priest found in the mine. It reports that Reinald gives Geralt armor and sword diagrams after the fight; it does not establish a better material reward for killing the deacon.
If you mean the priest in Funeral Pyres
This is a separate choice and does not concern the deacon. The quest reference describes an Eternal Fire priest who uses Geralt’s corpse-burning contract to conceal his fisstech connection. Questioning Titus can reveal that the priest attacked him after their dealings. Learning this matters because the dialogue and payment options differ depending on what Geralt discovers.

If your priority is avoiding the fight, accept the bribe. If you want to expose and retaliate against the priest after learning what he did, refuse it. The quest reference lists a suggested level of 3 and corpse-burning reward figures of 10 crowns per corpse plus 25, then 50 or 60 depending on the branch; those are in-game reference figures, not fixed real-world values.

The cited quest accounts describe the immediate dialogue branches and rewards, but do not establish broader lasting world-state consequences for either decision. Treat the deacon’s fate as dependent on the conversation rather than assuming one choice guarantees an outcome regardless of earlier dialogue.
