If that event has ended and you need a fresh watch page, schedule or create a new broadcast and share its URL. You can reuse the encoder setup or stream key, but YouTube does not document that reusing either preserves the old live URL.
First, separate the stream from the broadcast
YouTube uses two different resources for what viewers may casually call a “stream.” A liveStream carries the audio and video feed sent by an encoder. A liveBroadcast represents the scheduled or live event viewers watch. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation explains that one stream can be reused across multiple broadcasts.
A stream key is entered in the encoder so YouTube can accept the feed. It is not the viewer-facing URL. YouTube Help’s encoder setup instructions describe “Reuse settings” as creating a new stream by copying an earlier stream’s metadata, settings and stream key. That saves setup time; it does not establish that the earlier broadcast page is reused.
Choose based on what viewers need

For a new scheduled event, YouTube’s encoder live-stream guidance describes sharing the scheduled URL and letting viewers opt into reminders. Use that event-specific link when you need a distinct page to promote.

Will the old live URL still work?
Do not rely on a reused stream key—or a general channel live URL—to guarantee the same viewer page for a separate broadcast. The YouTube Help and API documentation describe reusing stream settings and creating broadcasts, but do not promise that a reused key keeps the previous watch URL. If viewers need a dependable page for a particular event, create or schedule that broadcast and distribute its URL.
What changes for a 24/7 channel?
If the continuous feed itself is the product, keep its broadcast running rather than ending it and expecting a later broadcast to inherit its URL. The API guide’s 24/7 example shows a long-running broadcast continuing while a special interview uses a separate broadcast. That is the documented pattern for preserving the ongoing event while giving a special event its own broadcast and video; it depends on configuring the setup for that use case.

For an archive, YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. This guidance does not promise a complete archive for streams lasting 12 hours or longer. If archiving matters for a long run, plan a separate recording rather than treating the stated under-12-hour rule as a guarantee for longer streams.
Keep the encoder setup simple without confusing it with the URL
- Decide whether this is the same event. If it must remain continuous on the current page, keep that broadcast live. If it is a new event, create or schedule a new broadcast.
- Set up the feed. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-stream setup flow and enter the stream key in your encoder. If you choose “Reuse settings,” review the copied title, description, privacy and other stream settings before publishing.
- Share the right page. For a fresh scheduled broadcast, share that event’s URL. Do not substitute the stream key for a watch link or assume a prior URL carries over.
- Check archive expectations. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; make separate recording arrangements for longer runs if you need a copy.
YouTube describes an encoder as streaming software or a hardware encoder. Hardware is optional, not a requirement for deciding whether to reuse a broadcast or create a new one.
