shsql.dll is a genuine Microsoft developer-tool file, not a normal Windows system DLL. It is the “Symbol Handler for SQL Debugger,” documented as part of Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 Enterprise Edition, so the safest repair is to restore or repair that legacy Visual Studio installation rather than download the file separately.
If Visual C++ 6 displays this message, Microsoft documented the exact error as:

SHSQL.DLL
This required file cannot be loaded. Please re-install Microsoft Visual C++.
That error can appear when creating, opening, or executing a Visual C++ 6 project. A program may also report that shsql.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded.

Before you begin
Do not copy shsql.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder. The file is not part of Windows and does not normally belong in either system directory.
Also avoid random DLL download websites. An isolated download may contain malware, the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or a file that still cannot load because one of its dependencies is missing. Microsoft does not provide a current standalone download page for shsql.dll.
First determine which situation you have:
- Visual C++ 6 itself will not open or load a project.
- An old application reports the file during startup.
- The error appeared after uninstalling Visual C++ 6 Enterprise and installing another edition.
- Security software or cleanup software removed a file.
- The message names a similarly spelled file rather than
shsql.dll.
The path below starts with the most likely repair.
1. Repair or reinstall Visual C++ 6
Time needed: 15–45 minutes, plus any restart
This is the primary fix when the error appears inside Visual C++ 6 or another program installed with that development environment.
Microsoft’s archived documentation associates shsql.dll specifically with Visual C++ 6.0 Enterprise Edition. Current Visual Studio releases and current Visual C++ Redistributables are not replacements for this IDE and debugger component.
Recommended Free Tools
Repair the existing installation
- Close Visual C++ and any program showing the error.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Locate your original licensed Visual C++ 6.0 installation media or approved installer.
- Insert the media, or open the folder containing the installer.
- Right-click the setup program and select Run as administrator.
- If Setup detects the existing installation, choose Repair, Modify, or Reinstall, depending on the label shown.
- Keep the Visual C++ 6 Enterprise components selected.
- Allow Setup to replace missing files.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Visual C++ 6 and repeat the action that produced the error.
Setup screens vary on old installers. If there is no repair option, uninstalling and reinstalling the complete legacy product may be necessary.
If the original media is unavailable
Do not substitute VC_redist.x86.exe, VC_redist.x64.exe, or a newer Visual Studio installer. Microsoft’s current Visual C++ Redistributable packages install newer C and C++ runtime libraries. They do not restore Visual C++ 6 IDE or debugger files such as shsql.dll.
Use a known-good, licensed backup of the original installation or run the complete legacy development environment in an isolated virtual machine. Microsoft describes Visual C++ 6 as unsupported, so test carefully on current Windows versions and keep important source projects backed up.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- Visual C++ 6 opens without the
SHSQL.DLLmessage. - The affected project opens, builds, or runs.
- The file is present in the Visual C++ installation directory rather than a Windows system directory.
- No new missing-file message appears for another Visual C++ 6 component.
If the same error returns immediately, continue with the registry check below instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
2. Fix the leftover Enterprise Edition registry entry
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Microsoft documented a specific edition-conflict scenario: an incomplete removal of Visual C++ 6.0 Enterprise Edition leaves registry data behind, and Setup later reports a missing shsql.dll while installing another Visual C++ 6 edition.
This is not a general registry-cleaning step. Use it only when:
- Visual C++ 6 Enterprise was previously installed.
- Enterprise Edition was removed incompletely.
- You are installing or repairing Professional or Standard Edition.
- The error matches the Visual C++ 6 Setup or project-loading problem.
The documented registry location is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftShared Toolsshsql.dll
Back up the registry first
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
regedit
- Press Enter.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- In Registry Editor, select File > Export.
- Choose All under Export range.
- Save the backup somewhere easy to find, such as your Documents folder.
- Browse to:
text
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftShared Tools
- Select the
shsql.dllkey. - Confirm that the key matches the documented Enterprise-uninstall situation.
- Right-click the key and select Delete.
- Close Registry Editor.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Visual C++ 6 Setup program again.
On 64-bit Windows, old 32-bit installers may use registry redirection. If the key is not at the path above, do not delete similar-looking entries at random. Repair the original product or obtain help from whoever maintains the licensed legacy installation.

How to tell whether this worked
Setup should proceed without treating shsql.dll as an installed Enterprise component. If the original error remains, restore the registry backup only if necessary and return to a complete repair or reinstall.
3. Check antivirus quarantine and the original installation folder
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A security product, cleanup utility, or manual deletion may have removed a file from the Visual C++ installation. Quarantine is only one possible cause; do not assume the file was removed by antivirus.
Check quarantine
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
shsql.dll. - Check the detected file path.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- The path belongs to the expected Visual C++ installation.
- The file came from your licensed installer or an existing installation.
- The security product identifies it as a false positive or the file can be verified.
- A full malware scan does not indicate broader compromise.
Afterward, repair or reinstall Visual C++ 6. Do not keep relying on a manually restored copy.

If you find shsql.dll in the old program’s installation directory:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the description, which should identify the SQL debugger symbol handler.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Check the file location and its parent product.
Do not treat a Microsoft-associated filename as proof that an arbitrary copy is safe. Public listings disagree about version, size, and architecture, so those values should not be used as universal identification criteria.
4. Check whether the error names a dependency instead
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
The message “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that shsql.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the file but fail to load one of its dependent DLLs.
Before replacing anything, record:
- The complete error text.
- The executable that displays it.
- The full path shown in the error or log.
- Whether the executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether
shsql.dllexists beside that executable or inside the Visual C++ installation. - Whether the error began after a program update, cleanup, or uninstall.
Use the affected program’s own log or a reputable dependency-analysis tool to identify the missing module. Do not replace files merely because their names resemble shsql.dll. Files such as sqlsrv32.dll, sqlncli.dll, and modern Visual C++ runtime libraries serve different purposes.
Check the application directory
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for the program’s own support files and logs.
- Do not copy
shsql.dllinto this folder unless the original vendor installer explicitly places it there.
If the error belongs to a specific old application rather than Visual C++ 6, reinstall or repair that application from its original, trusted installer. If the application bundled Visual C++ components, its installer is the correct place to restore them.

5. Run Windows component repair as a secondary check
Time needed: 15–40 minutes
Because shsql.dll is not a protected Windows component, SFC and DISM are less likely to restore it than a Visual C++ repair. They are still appropriate when other Windows files are damaged or multiple unrelated programs are failing.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if DISM requests it.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows, then test the affected program.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the Visual C++ repair rather than placing a downloaded DLL into a system folder.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and inconclusive. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the broader component problems behind repeated repair attempts; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the original Visual C++ product remains the definitive fix for a program-specific shsql.dll installation.
6. Do not register shsql.dll with Regsvr32
Time needed: 1 minute
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
shsql.dll is a Visual C++ 6 debugger component, not a DLL that should routinely be registered as a COM server. Running a command such as this is therefore not a valid first-line repair:
regsvr32 shsql.dll
It will not restore a missing file, repair Visual C++ 6, or install dependencies. It may produce another error that distracts from the original problem.
Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor’s documentation explicitly says that the particular DLL must be registered and provides the correct file path and architecture.
7. Check drivers only when the error is part of a wider hardware problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A normal shsql.dll error does not indicate a missing display, chipset, storage, or printer driver. Do not update drivers merely because a DLL error appeared.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, Sound, video and game controllers, or Printers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.

- Use Update Driver only when Windows or the hardware manufacturer provides a compatible package.
- Restart Windows and retest the application.
Do not install a driver merely because its name contains “SQL,” “Visual,” or “Microsoft.” Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through many driver versions by showing which drivers are outdated; its free scan identifies candidates, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing Visual C++ 6 when that is the actual owner of shsql.dll.
8. Check 32-bit and 64-bit placement
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Visual C++ 6-era development tools are 32-bit software. That does not mean the DLL belongs in System32 or that a 64-bit replacement is appropriate.
On 64-bit Windows:
- A 32-bit application normally loads its private support files from its own installation directory.
C:WindowsSystem32is used for 64-bit system components.C:WindowsSysWOW64contains 32-bit Windows components, but it is not a general storage location for third-party application DLLs.- An arbitrary 64-bit DLL cannot replace a required 32-bit DLL.
Use the file’s original application directory and the product installer to determine the correct location. If a 32-bit application loads shsql.dll from a private Visual C++ directory, repair that product instead of changing Windows folders.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCauses of shsql.dll errors
| Likely cause | What it means | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged Visual C++ 6 installation | The legacy debugger component is missing or incomplete | Repair or reinstall Visual C++ 6 Enterprise |
| Incomplete Enterprise uninstall | Old registry data conflicts with another edition | Back up the registry, then remove only the documented key |
| Quarantine or cleanup | The original file may have been removed | Verify the path and restore through the original installer |
| Missing dependency | The file exists but another module cannot load | Inspect logs and dependencies |
| Wrong architecture | A 32-bit tool is being given an incompatible DLL | Use the original product files |
| Windows corruption | Broader system files are damaged | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Wrong filename | The program needs a different SQL or runtime DLL | Identify the exact file before repairing |
When nothing works
If Visual C++ 6 still fails after a complete reinstall:
- Capture the full error text.
- Record the executable and the path shown in the message.
- Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs > Application.
- Check the affected product’s installation and setup logs.
- Confirm whether the problem affects only Visual C++ 6 or also another old application.
- Test the legacy environment in a supported isolated virtual machine.
- Use System Restore only when the failure began immediately after a known system change and a suitable restore point exists.
Do not keep experimenting with random DLL copies. If the original licensed media is unavailable, restoring a complete known-good legacy environment is safer than rebuilding it from unrelated downloads.
FAQ
Is shsql.dll a genuine Microsoft file?
Yes. It is documented as “Symbol Handler for SQL Debugger,” a Microsoft Visual C++ 6-era development component. The filename alone does not prove that every copy is safe, so verify its location and origin.
Is shsql.dll part of Windows?
No. It is not a normal Windows component and should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDoes the current Visual C++ Redistributable install shsql.dll?
No documented relationship connects shsql.dll with the current VC_redist.x86.exe or VC_redist.x64.exe packages. Those packages provide newer C and C++ runtime libraries, not the Visual C++ 6 debugger environment.
Should I download shsql.dll by itself?
No. There is no current standalone Microsoft download page for this file. Restore it through the original Visual C++ installation or the application that legitimately supplied it.
Should I run regsvr32 shsql.dll?
Normally, no. regsvr32 does not restore missing files and is not a routine repair for this debugger component.
Why did the error appear after installing another Visual C++ 6 edition?
An incomplete Enterprise Edition uninstall can leave the documented shsql.dll registry entry behind. Back up the registry and remove that key only when the situation matches Microsoft’s documented edition-conflict scenario.
Can SFC repair shsql.dll?
Usually not directly, because shsql.dll is not a protected Windows system file. SFC and DISM can help with broader Windows corruption, but the primary repair remains Visual C++ 6 or the old application that installed the file.
